Students = Cheap windows 7

Usually these guys buy keys in bulk and then pass the savings on to the customer.

Think it is less a piracy issue rather a breach of conditions in selling on these keys to a third party.

Errr - no.
What this is most likely is a Technet or MSDN key - an MSDN membership will get you 10 keys for "Non Commercial Use".
It is highly likely that is what these sellers are illegally selling.

Piracy is simply a breaking of the license agreement.
I can say 100% that you cannot buy a key and download for 7 Ultimate.
7 HP & 7 Pro yes you can - but only via the student deals.

I've reported the said auctions to EBay - hopefully they will remove them.

Is it possible to download the files on to one HD (with Vista) and install to another new HD in the same machine? Does the installation give you this option?

I'd like to keep my old Vista installation for a while in case there are any programs which I can't get to work on W7, Vista install is x64 as is the new install :)

You get a serial on your online reciept once you purchased. If you closed down this page, i dont know where else you'll be able to get it from.

Check your .ac.uk email address and see if you can access your reciept from there.

Yup, you can choose where you want the download manager to save the setup files. I also chose to have them on a seperate hard drive. From there, use the guides in this thread to make a bootable ISO/USB. Then select to install Win7 on another hard drive/partition other than the one you have vista on. As Vista is installed already, you should then get the option when booting what O/S you want to use. When you are ready, simply load up the Win7 DVD again, and remove/format the hard disk with vista on (along with Vista's bootloader which will also dissapear).

Microsoft always put a sting in their offers.

Due to impatience Ive downloaded pro 64 bit and ordered the dvd as well. Will give making an iso a go.

However when I ordered the dvd it says underneath 64 bit dvd kit "office ultimate 2007 dvd backup". I hope this some kinda typo, anyone else had this when ordering the backup dvd or am I about to receive a shiny backup copy of office (to go with my other shiny office dvd)?
 
Bought the 64-Bit Professional edition for my Sony Vaio last night, downloaded the files made an iso and burned that to a DVD, booted from it, formatted and installed.

All activated and working well. Just installing the sony bits to make the buttons and stuff work :).
 
i just ordered this an i'm pretty hacked off so far

my invoice says that its an upgrade - not what i want, i wanted a retail install (so i can start over) and i didn't realise it was a download, i wanted a CD

not happy.
 
It does say "upgrade" quite a bit on the offer site, including the image of the box.

Also, it's very clear it's a download as you proceed, as it gives you the extra option of buying physical media.

Why do you want a CD so much? Why not just download, much faster, then backup yourself?
 
Well if i had known it was an upgrade i'd have got the professional edition for the same price!

And i want the CD because it would be nice to have a proper version rather than a a self burnt CD with a scribble on it saying what was on it
