Cant see what the problem is tbh, has there been any cases in the past where a player has given the finger to fans in attendance at a game and got away with it?

Whilst Suarez's abusive gesture was given to a minority the FA did Rooney for swearing into a camera last season so a 1 match ban oppose to Rooney's 2 match ban seems fair to me.

Not this season but Rooney got away with it last season and Cole got away with it in 2007.

Edit: Should mention the FA let Rooney off because they deemed he was pointing his fingers at his own eyes :D

Most fans will agree a 1 match ban is fair as long as the FA are consistent with future offences.

Isn't this crackdown a recent thing? I think Carr got banned for a middle finger a couple of seasons ago and I thought Rooney did get banned last season for swearing?

I don't have a problem with the FA making these decisions, in fact I support them. I just want the FA to become consistent in their decision making and punishments.

Well, they make it up as they go along don't they?

As mentioned though, nothing wrong with this punishment as long as any similar incidents are punished in a similar way.

When does the ~9 game ban begin?

8 game ban doesn't kick in until he makes a decision on whether to appeal or not, which must be made within 14 days.

Key thing for Liverpool is weighing up the fixture list to get maximum value from the ban in relation to the timing of the appeal (if any), as clearly they'll want Carling Cup and FA Cup matches to be involved.

The ban was announced on the 20th December, so the optimal strategy IMO would be to wait until 22:00 on the 3rd of January (after the game against Man City) and then announce that he is not appealing. This means that he'll miss the following games, returning for the game against Man United on 11th Feb.

Friday, 6 January 2012
The FA Cup
Liverpool v Oldham, R3, 20:00
Wednesday, 11 January 2012
Carling Cup
Man City v Liverpool, SF, L1, 19:45
Saturday, 14 January 2012
Barclays Premier League
Liverpool v Stoke, 15:00
Saturday, 21 January 2012
Barclays Premier League
Bolton v Liverpool, 17:30
Wednesday, 25 January 2012
Carling Cup
Liverpool v Man City, SF, L2, 19:45

28th Jan ish - FA Cup 4th round

Tuesday, 31 January 2012
Barclays Premier League
Wolverhampton v Liverpool, 19:45
Monday, 6 February 2012
Barclays Premier League
Liverpool v Tottenham, 20:00

Based on those fixtures, at least 4 will be domestic cup games (assuming they don't lose to Oldham) which he might have been rested for anyway, and they should be able to beat Wolves, Bolton and Stoke at home without him, so they only game he'll really be missed for is Spurs. If they can take Oldham to a replay, it might even mean he is back for that game (not sure when the 3rd round replay would be scheduled for and impact on 4th round fixtures, them being in the Carling Cup semis will limit the available dates).

He's got 14 days from when he receives the QC's report, not from the day the decision was made, and he's still not received it.

OK wasn't aware of that, they better hope the postie isn't slacking off cos they could really do with the ban starting after the MC game on 3rd Jan but before the Oldham game on the 6th.

tbh I would have thought Liverpool would want him for the Carling Cup ties above all else, they're in semi finals so probably Liverpool's best chance of silverwear this season and a 4th place finish is probably remote even with Suarez

From what I gather this 'report' wont be received/available till mid January so if Liverpool do appeal we may not see any ban till March/April
