Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

Although that Japanese Leaflet thing is out and shows a ruined car. The Toyota Australia Facebook car is showing off this one still.

Thats the 2nd concept, will look nothing like that as Toyota just can't help themselves in making a bland car for grannies. :( The likes of Hyundai and Kia make far far more better designed cars then Toyota.

I owned a DC5 for 18 months

Really? I'm amazed you can be so anti-FWD then. Sure, people have their preferences but anyone who enjoys driving must realise that a good FWD can be great fun to drive. It's just a different type of fun, and it's perfectly easy to understand why some might like it above others.

That just looks like a Mk1 Hyundai Coupe :(

I think the concept II looks absolutely fantastic and how they should have kept it. Almost looks like a modern day Supra.

If this car had the Concept II design + 270bhp Impreza engine + RWD it would have been an utter hit. No doubt in my mind.

But i think now Toyota's modern day mind numbingly boring/bland side has affected the final result which is a great shame. And after seeing this, I'm half expecting Toyota to announce it'll be released with a 1.6 diesel hybrid engine or something. :(

Don't worry, the final design is just fine. Like any Jap sports car, it will look a bit 'meh' until you give it some nice rims and some low.

Saw on FB a review by a German magazine of the Subaru BRZ, it had a 2 litre motor with 230hp, as far as I can tell, sans turbocharger.

Oh and there is a disadvantage to the boxer engine especially for a car built with drifting in mind. It means the chassis legs are wide apart and that will restrict the steering lock.

Prototypes always get watered down thought, the Mk4 Supra turned up at Toyota HQ straight from the RND department running and alleged 400-500 bhp with a single turbo and they were told to rework it (hence why it will make those figures all day on stock internals).

I really like this, I can see it aiming for the MR2/Celica/MX5/RX8 buyer market and winning. The sort of market that a conservative design also sits better with.

Bombproof build quality and engine can't be bad.

Also, I imagine they have held back on the launch design so they can refresh every 24 months and offer aftermarket sytling options and different models.

Indeed, I imagine the chances are fairly high that a 'TRD' styling pack appears that makes it look considerably more like the concepts did.

I see the table compares this to the RX8, MX5 and CR-Z. Whilst this is clearly in this class, I suspect it will also be competing with the hot hatches looking at possible pricing and potential demographics.

1200kg kerb weight is pretty good by today’s standard. Fuel economy is a bit meh compared to a small capacity turbo, but emissions seem low and road tax will be ok for this size car then. That engine is going to be sublime with all the benefits of a bombproof N/A lump though. It does seem to offer the performance of a back-to-the-roots purest, before we got spoiled by the turbos and 250+ BHP as standard. 200BHP is all you really need in this size car to get a decent sub 7 sec 0-60 and 140mph+.

Going head to head with the MX5 & RX8, this has to be pure win…. Real world usable performance on UK roads where you can have fun at license retaining speeds. Loads of tuning options and you can bet there will be some 220/250/300BHP tuning options or official models coming.

If this is priced at the 22-25K level, I can see selling like mad. Given the price increases on cars over the last couple of years, most of the smaller hot hatches and even warm hatches seem to be starting at 17-19K these days and for the family sized hot hatches prices are now up to the 20-23K, this could become a firm favourite. Heck the new 1.6T Astra GTC specs in at 28K with all the options.

There is a good probability that this will have very strong residuals making PCP very viable and probably around the £280-£330pm x 36 with a nominal deposit. Looking at what else is out, would I take this over the hot hatches.

Looking very promising, although I dare say it will fall into the "looks faster than it is" catergory.

lol, I agree, but it is better than looking like @~'# but doing an ~11 sec quarter mile :p

It is quite a small car (MX5 to S2000 size) and 17”s fill out the arches.

200bhp in a car this small and light (ok so not uber light but light enough) is still ample though. We have been spoiled by the high BHP figures in the hot hatches of recent. This isn’t competing with the 370z, Boxster, Cayman etc.

Is there actually any competition to this in the UK given the RX8s demise? The only one I can see is the MX5 2.0 with hardtop @ 23k and this has quite a bit less power.

Should be a safe used purchase in 3 years as well with that engine. I imagine all these low capacity turbo engines will be a future headache for the 2nd or 3rd owner.
