Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

It's not as good looking as the concepts, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it ugly. I don't think the colour helps it much. The red they used in the concepts looked much better.

Small details (headlights, wingmirrors, DRL/fogs) have changed from the FT-86 II concept but nothing massive. The major features like the main shape, lines and curves are virtually the same as the version of the car that you said looked fantastic.

I see no awkward proportions in the GT-86 that weren't on the FT-86 II

Front end looks more 'bulbous', headlights don't sit as nicely, rear lights are too small. Sure, it's the same basic shape but the changes are enough to take it from being nicely proportioned pretty little coupe (the original concept) to looking like something from KIA or Hyundai.

Besides, I already said I don't like the second concept as much as the original.

You certainly did, but you did also say you still thought the second concept looked fantastic :p

I really don't see that those small difference take it from a 'fantastic' looking car to 'nowhere near as pretty' though. I'd say they're smaller changes than what we saw from concept I to concept II.

I agree with what MrLOL says, the changes are really nothing a decent TRD bodykit and some new alloys wouldn't sort, the proportions of the basic shape are all virtually identical.

The biggest and most striking difference for me is the ride height being noticeably bigger on the actual road car, with a less deep front bumper. Lower it and stick a splitter on there and it'll regain a lot of the concept look.

It only takes a few small differences though, those comparison shots just compound what I'm saying, the differences, although fairly small, are enough to tip the balance from 'like' to 'don't like'. I loved the original concept, I didn't like the changes of concept II but overall it was still a great looking car, mainly because it still had those aggressive headlights and deep, agressive looking bumper. It still had that sort of mini LFA look. The changes of the production model have tipped the scale, it just isn't as pretty now.

This is a daft discussion anyway, you can't debate something as subjective as looks. The simple fact is I loved concept I, liked concept II but wasn't that keen on the changes, and I'm not a fan of the production model.

Its lost a bit of its 'edge' i have to agree but on the whole i still think its a fairly good looking car. Just a shame the rumours of it being upwards of £28k now instead of nearer 20 :(

Similar thing happened to the Honda CRZ, the concept looked really nice but when it finally got to the show room it had been dulled down quite a bit. The basic elements were all the same but its the little details like Drexel says that can 'make it'

Must admit, the red one in that vid looks better. It may be the colour or the different angles, but it definitely looks better than the orange one.

Definitely lost its appeal to me. The lights have made a massive difference! That third photograph in Drexel's link makes it look like a complete mess!

If it handles as well as they say it does then it might make a good second hand buy in 5 years or so. Those rear lights though. :\

Have to agree that it no longers looks as good as the concept - that bulbous bonnet affects the sleekness of it all. Hopefully, it will look better in real life and something other than orange! Looking forward to a test drive next year. There's not much that refers back to the Celica, other than the 2 lines either side of the badge on the bonnet.

The lines, shape, height, etc. of the bonnet are almost (if not completely) identical to the Concept II

I'm wondering if a lot of these apparent differences people are seeing are more down to the press shots of the GT86 being taken from a higher angle than the FT-86 II were.

It's not just the camera angles, the smaller more shallow bumper, smaller headlights and comedy ride height all make the upper part of the front end appear more bulbous.

Agree that it doesn't look as good as the concept, but then again that's not exactly surprising. Hopefully someone brings out a concept inspired bodykit for these. And some coilovers, that ride height is not good :(.

Edit: omg what have they done to the back!?

Sorry, we're not allowed to talk about the change of the looks.

Clearly the car isn't aimed at us. :p Close the thread now. ;)
