Subnautica

This game really should be getting discussed more here! It's just about to become a full-release title, and even at the full price of £19.49, this has to be one of the best games to purchase at the moment. The world is stunning, the atmosphere is unmatched (I've never been as immersed when playing a game, literally) and the visuals are stunning. For a small studio, they have put many others to shame and have absolutely done early access right. The game has been working and perfectly playable for years already.

I also watched JackSepticEye's playthrough of the full release (he got it a week early as he was a huge supporter of it and was in constant contact with the devs) and he read out a message from the studio to him saying that they're grateful for his support on Youtube because they almost shutdown until he started streaming the game. That then made purchases of the game go through the roof and kept them in business, and I'm really glad it did because Subnautica is a gaming gem for this age. If anyone is on the fence about buying it, I highly recommend playing it, even if you don't care much about the story. Exploring such a visually-rich ocean world, being able to build bases and your own submersible craft really makes this game a worthwhile play.

Go and buy it if you don't already have it. It has come a long way!

One thing that is missing from this game (Yes i know it's never going to happen) is Co Op! I need to play with mates, i mean how cool would it be playing with your buddies!

Well, they said a while back that it wasn't a priority, then something was posted saying it wasn't going to happen, then it was a maybe if they can, and since then nothing else has been mentioned. Maybe after release we'll get more information, but there's also a fan mod that is being developed for co-op play:

It seems to be endorsed by the developers so maybe that will do it!

hmm, that is interesting and has def caught my eye. Will continue to see how that develops over time.

He can be a bit silly at times, but I find his videos entertaining. I do only pick and choose the videos of games that I know I'll be interested in though. I watched almost all of his videos on Subnautica and he really did do a lot for the game, and he's also come a very long way from making Youtube videos in a little cabin on his parents' property :)

And I'm back.
Pancake is ace.
VR is shocking. Great for just swimming about but forget trying to play the game. Shame, this could be awesome.

How was it shocking?? Not saying your experience wasn't bad but I'm just really surprised. I had a pretty good experience when I tried it a few months ago on my Vive and it was more than playable. Only thing that really bothered me was the UI was slightly out of view. I would even go as far as to the say the atmosphere in VR was fantastic! Maybe they changed something for the worse?

Really love spending an hour every now and then in this game.
I find the VR to be pretty good on my Vive, as said the UI could do with a little bit of tweaking for VR but the game is so enjoyable and immersive when you put a headset on... doing into the deep and being chased by a massive sea creature in VR is terrifying, really gets your heart pumping.

I don't imagine it was 'shocking', it's along the lines of people being 'gutted' to mean they're slightly disappointed. I've played Subnautica in VR (Rift) and I'd echo the less sensational comments. The UI is probably the worst part in VR, text and elements at the far edges of view could use some work but otherwise for me was perfectly playable. The feeling of putting on and wearing the headset increased the immersion of feeling like you're actually wearing a diving mask. I'd like some Touch Controller improvements, but I still play in non-VR just for the visuals as the resolution of current gen VR lets the game down a bit I feel.

This has been on my shortlist for over 2 years now, and I'm really tempted to get it. A couple of questions if anyone can answer them...
- how story driven is it (can you ignore any story and build everything when you want to)?

- is the world/landscape the same every game, or is it randomly generated providing a different game each time (a bit like Minecraft)?

yes and no

there is a story, but there's no massive incentives to follow it (although it is cool). you might be limited building certain items by the need to find blueprints during story missions

the landscape is the same, and there is an edge to the map, although possible they might add/have added a procedural element to areas beyond the map.
