Subnautica

This has been on my shortlist for over 2 years now, and I'm really tempted to get it. A couple of questions if anyone can answer them...
- how story driven is it (can you ignore any story and build everything when you want to)?

- is the world/landscape the same every game, or is it randomly generated providing a different game each time (a bit like Minecraft)?

You can choose the Creative mode option which allows you to build and explore without any constraints whatsoever. It takes the purpose from the game, and I personally played it for about 15 minutes before I was bored simply because there is no end goal because you already have everything available to you in the game to build without the need to gather resources.

Then there are three other modes, Survival (gather resources, build, manage oxygen, water, food, health etc), Freedom (gather resources, build, manage oxygen and health) and finally, Hardcore (perma death, gather resources, build, manage oxygen, food, health). These other three modes really make the game better :)

How was it shocking?? Not saying your experience wasn't bad but I'm just really surprised. I had a pretty good experience when I tried it a few months ago on my Vive and it was more than playable. Only thing that really bothered me was the UI was slightly out of view. I would even go as far as to the say the atmosphere in VR was fantastic! Maybe they changed something for the worse?
The graphics were great, the feeling of being under the sea was awesome. I assumed it was designed to be used with a 360 controller and I couldn't find anyway to open my inventory or add things to hot slots. The UI was horrible, I had to cross my eyes several times to see the quick slots and when the inventory did turn up it was too close to my face and was locked so I couldn't move further away.
Pancake is a blast :)
I'm off to google to see if I missed something obvious with the controls..

Ahh I see :) Yes the UI did leave a lot to be desired. I saw recently that it had been consolidated into an icon so to speak so thought it may be better now. I did use a 360 controller when I played it on VR so that may explain why I didn't notice those issues myself.

Started a new Pancake game myself last night on the back of the news it's launching soon. So much fun, might have to set my Vive up and give it a try too :D

I've read that some people use the mouse and keyboard in VR. It was a pain having to look up or down to swim that way with a controller. Maybe that'll work well.
Might start a new game as I've never been a fan of hunger and thirst in games... too unnatural.

For somebody with a crippling fear of the deep sea (space too), is this game a waste of time? Just about managed the oceans in Ark but only ever on the back of a big ass shark or something, having to actually swim would make me shiver and tear up (not cry im a man wot) and get clinical depression tiers of achy stomach lmao.

We all have our fears leave me alone.

You know it's not real right? It's only pixels on a monitor.

That's like saying people shouldn't be scared/tense in a horror game or arachnophobes shouldn't be bothered by spider enemies.

But no I didn't know it was fictional, but how do you explain my entire house submerging in water whenever I go in the ocean? HMM? HMMMMMMMM!?

This game is definitely not for you then. It is all about swimming underwater with things that arent very friendly.

Well, not everything isn't friendly. But most things in the deeper parts of the game definitely want to eat your face!

Just swimming around the shallows is an amazing experience and one that I think many would appreciate and enjoy.

I've been loosely following this through early access and tempted to give it a try now it's released - given the size of the world/ oceans etc. I assume it's pretty resource-heavy?

A lot of people mention in the steam reviews that they have a fear of the ocean but they enjoy subnautica.

Subnautica can be quite calming and shockingly scary all at the same time. The starting zone for example is called the Safe Shallows and it's name depicts what the area is like. There are surrounding biomes that aren't scary either and quite beautiful. Then there's the deeper areas...

I have an immense fascination with the deep sea and wish mankind would explore it more then we actually do so I hugely enjoy the game.

I began playing right after getting home last night and got as far as making a Seamoth....and then the damn 1.0 update landed (a 9mb update) so I'm not sure if I should start from scratch or what. The game has changed a lot since I last played it (Silent running update) and I noticed better textures in places, way better performance and a nice new UI for the fabricator's crafting.

Compared to other games in and around the same ilk it bloody good. Its not a massive download either at around 3.9Gb

There are some areas which might make you uneasy. The starting area is ~10ft deep, clear waters, bright, small fish, Finding Nemo-esque. If you swim further out you will find shark sized fish, a couple are aggressive. Mid to late game you'll find you need to travel into the deeper and darker areas, it can be unnerving. However I really really recommend the game, if you like the resource collecting and base building aspect, meshed with the underwater world. If you have any fears, probably my single tip is just swim out with the intention of finding something 'scary'. Maybe turn your sound off, sit back from the screen and go out and find it. Once you've seen it up close you might realise it's not really anything to worry about, you've seen the worst, so to speak.

Quite tempted by this. Does the game have a story that you follow, or is it more like No Man's Sky, in which you basically make your own?

Thanks for the feedback guys, I expected more 'stop being a wuss' comments than there was lol, phobias aren't fun man and it's my biggest one. I like the idea of seeking out the big monsters to get used to them, but it's the imagination that makes it scary. If you play a game like Ark you know what can spawn and where they spawn after a while, especially in the sea and how the AI works but that didn't stop it feeling like something gigantic was about to rise out of the sea bed lol.

A good idea would be to use the 2 hour refund time I guess?
