Summer Transfer Thread 2018

its nothing like what everton did

everton packed the midfield of offensive players because they lost there top scoring goalscorer

arsenal are filling the gaps of places we have needed sorting for years!!

I meant in terms of the level of players that are being signed, not the positions tbh.

We don't necessarily need upgrades, we need to bring the best out of the talent we already have.

Auba, Lacazette, and Ozil can bang goals in for fun but it means nothing if the team concede stupid goals and crumble against the slightest bit of aggression from another team.

Leno is a gamble but they obviously see something that leads them to believe he can be a class keeper with the right coaching, he's still relatively young for a keeper. Torreira is who I'm most excited about, looks like a solid bull of a DM who can also drive forward and play a decent pass or two, something we've not had in over a decade. Someone like him can help get the best out of the likes of Xhaka, Ozil, and Ramsey.

Lichtsteiner brings some much needed competition and can act as a mentor for Bellerin, another who's played nowhere near their potential. He's also an ******** and we need a few of those in our team to get us through difficult periods, he'll hopefully help stop us completely crumbling when things are going against us.

Kos is old and broken, I believe there's a good player somewhere in Mustafi (deeeeeeeeep down) and having someone solid and reliable like Sokratis next to him will help him build some confidence after an awful season. They could be a decent pairing if they click.

We have a lot of players playing nowhere near their potential and I think that's the priority for this window given the limited funds. Bellerin, Mustafi, Mkhitaryan, Ramsey, Özil, Iwobi, Xhaka, Lacazette, and Aubameyang playing at or near their potential can all be amazing players and help push for Top 4. I'm not expecting us to be back in there come the end of the next season, but having a manager and backroom staff that know what they're doing and can spot and bring in talent makes the future seem brighter than it's ever been for Arsenal.

I disagree. Arsenals problems is absolutely a quality problem. The fact that Iwobi got 40 appearances for you last season speaks volumes. Is Torreira really an upgrade on Xhaka? He's had a decent world cup but id be cautious of using that as some sort of scouting. Auba and Lacazette are vital for Arsenal, its a decent forward line for sure its just whats behind that's uninspiring and i dont believe Emery has recruited anyone that makes people take notice. Leno is younger then Cech and im happy to be proven wrong but i dont think he's better...

For the record i like the look of Sokratis, looks strong / physical etc, not sure he's good enough to be Arsenals first choice personally and its first choice players Arsenal should be looking at....ones that will take them to the next level.

Everyone who isn't an Arsenal fans thinks that their signings are underwhelming. Make of that what you will.

Perhaps it will turn out really well but signing older and not top quality defenders has never worked out well has it?

Generally signing defenders who aren't top quality isn't going to improve your squad...especially if what you have is Mustafi and Koscielny (who once was a good defender...nowadays im not so sure).

I get Arsenals fans being excited, nothing wrong with that and I'm absolutely happy for them but I don't see this as some sort of revolution like many are suggesting (not necessarily on here).

so they have brought in a young understudy to cech to learn before he retires, some experienced right back to give competition to the only right back at the club, a new central defender to replace the retired mertersacker, and if they bring in Torreira he could well replace the outgoings of cazorla and wilshire.???

all done within the budget set so far?

doesnt seem so bad to me. replacing people who didnt play with people who will play.

so the signings are an upgrade on who they have replaced.

They aren't going to take Arsenal to the next level is what I am getting at. Bellerin is highly suspect, bringing in an ageing 34 year old as some sort of competition doesn't make sense to me personally. They've replaced players for players of a similar quality.

Leno isn't a young understudy, he's 26! Courtois is 26 and De Gea 27. Donnarumma sure...Leno no. If you go on and sign a couple of top top drawer players id understand this padding of the squad out. If this is it then you wont get top 4 imo.

Edit. What is Arsenals budget? Surely the 50 mil talk isn't right...Arsenal have buckets of money don't they?

Mahrez signing for City this week apparently for 60 mil.

A team with the expectations of Arsenal should be looking at £50m on a single player, not £50m total budget. More unwillingness to sanction spending by the board?

Meh I’m looking forward to the new season to see what Emery brings to our side.

So far our signings seem pretty good ie experienced rather than youngsters who may not be able to handle the pressure.

Not expecting us to win titles with the squad we have but at least a better season than last year and year before.

I’m genuinely excited about Arsenal next season, to see how a different manager deals with games and our squad.

I wasn’t expecting us to go out and spend £100mill on world class players.

Same here.

I think the transfer strategy for the summer seems pretty clear. Bring in some short term experience to steady the boat and improve our defensive issues of recent seasons. We don’t need much in attack.

You don’t need to spend 50mil per player. Torreira for example looks promising if he comes in.

Looking forward to the new season more than the last few years for sure.

I think that's a little harsh on the board tbh.. given that the Man City's of this world appear to have bottomless pit of cash to spend. I'm sure they will want to build a stable squad from back to front over the next few years , not one that crashes and burns quick, which can happen if you just spend say 100M on just a few players..

Right and we have spent that much in the past ie Lacazette. It hasn’t helped us win any titles or trophies this season

I can see why the board won’t sanction anymore money to a new manager. They are thinking let’s see how he does this season then look at spending more in the next few seasons. Everyone knows how tight fisted arsenal are when it comes to transfer windows.

It makes sense plus Emery gets a chance to see where he needs to really improve us when he has his team out.

Seems sensible to give Emery and the club time to see exactly what the arsenal squad is capable of with a different leadership, 12 months to work out where and what's needed. Because nobody knows, the philosophy of the team hasn't changed for 12 years...

Big money purchases right now would be completely reactionary

Exactly, I’d love us to go out and spend a few hundred mill on players but doesn’t make sense to do that if the manager can’t get the best out of them.
Give Emery a season or 2 to get his football vision into the squad then look at spending more money.

Be interesting to also see what Emery can do with Xhaka who imo has been a little underwhelming. Certainly a very combative midfield, maybe this give Ramsey a bit of a free role to get forward a bit more?

wont happen he'll just get a nice new fat contract at madrid

I can't see that TBH, he already has a contract until 2021 and I can't see RM improving that. They have no need to. And they apparently want Neymar as his replacement. Getting €300k+ a week off the budget would also be a big thing too, but Neymar would likely want that as well. Whatever happens Madrid need players in the next 2-4 years as the squad is ageing, Ronaldo included.

How much does Ronaldo enhance the madrid image though? He's the biggest name in world football, i imagine be brings in a lot of that 300k a week to be fair.

I reckon Ronaldo might leave Madrid this summer. I think RM want Neymar and PSG might prefer to get rid of Neymar over Mbappe.

Pretty sure Ronaldo is on more than £300k MissChief, thought it was over £500k/week. Bale is supposed to be on ~£500k as well.

According to a few places he is on over £350k/week after tax which is ridiculous.
