Summer Transfer Thread 2018

Overrated show pony, absolutely loathe Shaqiri so I'm gutted we've signed him.

He's been a flop at every single club he's played for since moving from Basel and barely looked good enough for Stoke while he was there.

To be honest most of Liverpool's signings in the past two years have come with little excitement or confidence in being good, the majority have turned out great?

Pigeon Pigeoned them all. Shaqiri's going to score 40 goals next season now.

Seriously though, had we been signing him without any release clause and ended up paying £25m+ then I'd be totally against it but for £13m I'm not sure you can lose. I hope and expect we'll sign another attacking player before the window closes (whether that be Fekir or not) which will mean Shaqiri really will only be a squad player and we're really not in City's position where we can spend £60m on squad players.

I agree with Pigeon in the sense that he is a bit of a show pony/match of the day player but sometimes these players just need a kick up the arse to get them going again. He's undoubtedly got plenty of ability but question marks have been over his attitude and application - he's not going to be a star at Liverpool, he won't even be a regular in the side and any issues over his attitude won't be tolerated. Hopefully he sees it as his last opportunity to prove himself at a high level after not cutting it at Bayern first time around because he'll give us something different - at times against deep defences you need that maverick player that will try something crazy or is willing to have a shot from 25 yards at times. Worst case though, you can always shift him on to a West Ham or similar in a years time and at least get your money back.

8 goals and 7 assists last season in a really poor Stoke side isnt to be sniffed at. The only club (Basel aside) hes done well at is in the premiership so ill take that. In fairness Inter were a mess when he was there and at Bayern he was fighting for a place with two of the best players in the world in that position. He was also a kid...hes only 26 now!

He's a vital squad player who will add a little somethijg different. An absolute unit aswell.

Still expect Fekir to come in aswell.

Vestergaard in at Southampton for £18m from Borussia Monchengladbach. Looks like a decent addition to a relatively wobbly looking defence.

Fairly happy with our business so far, Armstrong, Elyounoussi, Gunn and Vestergaard are all improvements (on paper anyway) to our current options.

That pretty much uses up the last of the VVD money so hopefully by the time a few more are shipped out like Boufal and presumably one of our strikers, we may even look at adding a goalscorer to play in 25 games a season Austin can't manage :p

All this petty sniping at other teams signings is a bit pathetic.

Shaqiri was a snip at £12m and will be a quality squad player for Liverpool, and Arsenal, by buying quality players, have addressed holes in their squad that have been there for too long.

Both sides have done well.

Shaqiri for 13mil in the current market is an absolute bargain. He's better than having to play for Stoke, hopefully it hasn't held back his progression too much

Makes me laugh how people were criticizing arsenals signings saying not top 4 quality etc

Then liverpool go and sign shaqira :o:o
Liverpool didn't finish a distant 6th and are not in desperate need to improve nearly every area of their first 11 to bridge the gap on the sides that did finish in the top 4. That's Arsenal. I don't see how Arsenal buying squad players is going to help them bridge that gap.

Liverpool on the other hand, in the attacking 3rd, don't need and would find it incredibly difficult to improve on their first team options. What we need is greater depth their which Shaqiri will give and if as I expect, we end up signing another higher quality attacker too, as a 5th choice you're going to struggle to get better than him.

Only a couple of our signings are squad players. Leno, Papastatopolous and Torreira are first team players.

It’s not just the players, it’s the entire regime change as well which could help us catchup.

Jorginho's joined Chelsea. Incredible to think that City wouldn't pay up for Fred in January and now again with Jorginho but have spent £60m on Mahrez who's hardly going to feature.

Based on what I've seen of Jorginho he'll be a good addition to Chelsea's squad. With Sarri in charge and assuming they sign a couple more players they could be back to their best next season.

If these are the players that are going into your first 11 to bridge that gap then that's even more of a concern.
They are 3 very good players. It’s not as if we have a weak squad. I think our squad is pretty strong now. Anyway, like I said, it’s impossible to call the way Arsenal will go this season as we don’t know what the new manager will do with them. I’d be happy to get back in the top four.

Agreed. Shakira is a good signing, whether or not he does anything of note in Liverpool remains to be seen.

Much like our signings, who certain footballer followers have constantly gone on about...I’m quite excited to see them come in and hopefully they get off to a good start.
