**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

seeing as he isn't a good manager I doubt that will happen

Given what he did for Blackburn I would disagree but then our board kept him on a very tight leash. He was given precise budgets and made to work with a squad that was as hungry as he was for results. The money at City seems to have gone to his head with him now paying stupid amounts of cash for players who will no doubt underperform. Its a shame as I think in the right environment he could become a much better standard of manager but hes sinking in to the cash pile at city.

^^ Agree.

Bridge - Always injured, can't defend.
Toure - Defending abilites went AWOL after the Cup of Nations.
Lescott - Looks like Worf
Richards - Potentially the best in the world. All Hughes needs to do is tell him to imagine the ball's a pie.

I disagree, on paper that's without a doubt stronger than Arsenal, Everton, Villa and Spurs'

The problem Sparky will have is getting them to play like a unit and seeing as he isn't a good manager I doubt that will happen

Just lol at those comments!

No way is that better than Arsenal. Clichy and Sagna are both easily better. Toure and Gallas, could be argued either way imo. I'd guess Lescott was probably better than Vermaelen at this stage (especially considering his experience playing in the premiership) but that could change.

Its not that. He needs to learn how to control players with bigger ego's, the Blackburn players played for him and listened to him due to the fact there not a big club etc etc

Man City players are a different kettle of fish, he's still learning the ropes on how to control these type of players.

I don't see why he just doesn't move Kompany into center half, there is no way he can accommodate Kompany and De Jong together unless he wants to drop one of the bigger names..

Given is also much better than Almunia, but i think Arsenal's defence is still better fullstop.

*cough*

9 goals conceded at home all season

*cough*

:D

Chelsea conceded only 6 goals at home in 2004-05. Man United conceded only 7 goals at home 2007-08.

Record is held by Man United when they conceded only 4 goals at home in the 1994-95 season.

Better than Arsenal?

Bridge worse than Clichy, check.
Toure worse than Gallas, check.
Lescott worse than Vermaelan, unknown (so I'll say not).
Richards worse than Sagna, check.

Not to mention the organisational issues as you mention.

No point in comparing them like for like as you have given that as a unit Arsenal's defence is all over the place. Oh and there is no chance that Gallas is better than Toure these days at the very best you could say Gallas is on a par with Toure

If Hughes can get his defence to play as a unit then their defence will be better than Arsenal's. Fact

It's useless to compare defenders individually - you have to see how they play together. Also don't forget that the city defence have a much better keeper behind them. I'm not saying city's defence is necessarily better though just that it's not easy to call.

Have you been watching the same Toure as me for the past 2 seasons?

Even then i still think Gallas at his best is at least as good as Toure at his best.

Aww you really need to find out how defending works. ;) No chance in hell Toure is the better defender! Gallas is an excellent CB! Toure is lacklustre!

Have you been watching Gallas for the past 2 seasons? Good at Chelsea, been rubbish at Arsenal

What the hell is that spose to mean? Sticking 4 individuals together even if they're the 4 best defenders in the world and just thinking they'll be good as a unit doesn't work. Even if you believe that player for player Arsenal have better defenders than City if they cant play as a unit then they're screwed and as has been proven they dont play as a unit.

I was meaning it in the context of you think Gallas is nowhere near Toure in terms of defending. Which is garbage - hence you need to find out how defending works!

I'd agree with that completely, Hughes has helped himself no end by signing players who are motivated mainly by money. Just look at Robinho for example.

Ah well as I said for the past two seasons Gallas has been crap so at best you could say they're on a par with one another. Gallas certainly isn't better

Oh and during Arsenal's best recent spell (2002-2004) Toure was immense that shouldn't be forgotton

Really? I think I've seen pretty much all of Arsenal's games for the past 2 seasons and apart from a couple of high profile hissy fits and the occasional mistake that any defender makes, he's been great for us. I would say rather than watching him play for Arsenal maybe you have been building your opinion based on what the papers say.

I can't see where you can describe the 5th best defensive record in the Prem last season as all over the place. If ours was all over the place then Aston Villa's defence must have been utter trash.

Re-watch the 4-4 game against Liverpool and the two Semi Final's against us and tell me your defence wasn't all over the place. Oh and while you're at it watch the 1-4 defeat against Chelsea as well.

As for Gallas compare him to when he was at Chelsea and he's a shell of the player he once was.

So in the Liverpool game our defence was as bad as theirs?

You are just cherry picking though of course. I could pick out games where the other top 3's back four have defended shambolically. Would that mean much?

I think most people who have watched Arsenal in detail for the last two years recognise that the defensive issues come from the kamakazee midfield playing in front of them.

Out of the defenders mentioned I'd take Lescott. They can keep the rest.
