It's quite clear that your "first choice" targets aren't those at the top of the tree - worrying....

Suarez?

So, tell me who's better then Carroll at what he does? (ie: tall, strong .. target man type without the long ball madness)

I can think of 1, i mentioned him .. we spoke to him, he wont move clubs now, and spain in the near future.

The Carroll hate still surprises me. Hes already a good player who has proven he can score in the premier. Big lad, strong, great in the air, decent enough on the ball and a good finisher. A few more years developing and I think he will be banging in 20 goals a season year in, year out and if he continues to link up play like he does combined with that he will be a fantastic player for any top club.

Providing the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts, I don't care.

Carroll's no superstar but he's got the potential to be a top class centre forward and of his type (and I said this before there was even a rumour we were in for him), he's the best around.

If we can sign a wide player with a decent cross on him, Carroll will take some stopping and with Suarez and others running off him, we'll have a dangerous strike force next season.

edit: Dalglish's record at signing Geordie strikers for British transfer records isn't too bad so I'm hopeful.

Its not Carroll hate so much as Liverpool hate it seems.
We sign a promising youth for 16mill? its mad and ruining the transfer market.
United pay 20m ? nothing.
United sign Rio all the way back for an insane fee? nothing really.
We sign Carroll? ruining the transfer market.

People have accepted United will spend big (on occasion), Chelsea will, City will ..
They got used to us floating around having to make do with selling and only reinvesting 50% of the fee on a 6th choice signing.
Now we can pay whatever is required to get the guy we want? its ruining the transfer market..

-edit-
The above was partially in jest ... partially.

Which would explain why Villa fans voted Downing their player of the year and not Young? You'd imagine their fans would have a better idea regarding the performances of the 2 players.

And I don't think anybody has said Downing is worth £19m and I'd be surprised if we paid that for him, although I was staggered that we paid what we did for Carroll so who knows what might happen.

Dont know, even in a bad mood and not trying he still had more assists while scoring the same amount as Downing last season.

Probably the same reason why some United fans rave about Valencia and kick Nani just because he falls over a bit and his shooting is wayward, while completely disregarding the positives.

Went to about 9 Villa games last season (since i live here and tickets are soo easy to get compared to Anfield), Downing was a much more impressive team player, offered more overall then Young did, imo.
Young looked selfish and egotistical .. so should fit right in with the United crew .

You wouldn't though, you're spoilt by having Wayne Routledge, Peter Lovenkvrands and Jonas to drool over.....

lol :p

Not saying I wouldn't have him at Newcastle but we aren't trying to get in the top 4. He's good, but not that good. Same about Young as well, average English player going for OTT price because hes English.

I honestly think we'r looking to sign Mata and Downing, personally.
Not sure there's much chance of it happening, but the intent is there..

I think we will indeed sign both of them. Mata I'll be happy about, Downing is one where I will have to wait and see. Mata and Honda would be better I think. Or Honda and Downing.

Or Honda and Honda.

:D

IINM, Young is Villa's main set-play taker which might be the reason why his assist stats are higher and that his general play has not been as good as Downings. I don't know.

I admitted a few months back that imo, Young was a slightly better player than Downing but I don't think there's much between them.

From Liverpool's point of view, we need a Downing type player a lot more than we need a Young type player.

Do you think Downing is that man? Never really rated him personally.

You wouldn't rate him being an ex-Boro player :p

Whether he's the best option, I'm not sure but he's the best realistic option that I can think of.

There's very few wingers around these days that will stay out wide and put decent crosses into the box and that's what we and specifically Carroll needs. The likes of Young and N'Zogbia (or even considerably better wingers like Hazard and Mata) look to cut infield at every opportunity, which is great if that's the type of player your side needs.

It makes sense if you look at the kind of teams Kenny's built in the past... You need a 'wide' man who's comfortable in the middle (as a midfielder, not as an inside forward type) and Mata fits the bill.

...............GK
......CB............CB.........LB
RB
..........CM.............CM
.......RAM........................LW
................CF
.....................ST

Is pretty much the way he sets his teams up, and how we were playing under Kenny as well .. but in reverse.. with a tucked in LW and wider RW

.... Mata fits the bill.

He doesn't, not if you're going off how we played the back end of last season and the late 80's side.

We played Meireles either tucked in on the right or in some games on the left and in the 80's it was the likes of Houghton. Neither are remotely like Mata.

If we do sign Mata (and I don't think we will), he'll play wide and if we do play the system above, it will be with Henderson, Gerrard or possibly Adam playing the tucked in wide role. The reason for this is that (just like we done on occasions last season), we'll swith to a 4-3-3 with Suarez moving out wide and then Henderson moving further inside.

Mata hasn't played wide for Valencia all year (at least, not 'wide' as in winger wide, like the year previous), he's spent a lot of time centrally, even playing as a pseudo CF in some games. Other games as part of a midfield 3, and he's looked far from out of place.
He can cross with both feet, score with both feet, tackle, pass. Comfortable with playing wide on both sides, off a striker, in midfield ..
How does that not fit the bill? he's perfect to play the role Raul played for us last year, and his ability to play pretty much any attacking or playmaking role makes him a substantial upgrade, imo.

If anything he's looked better not playing wide for Valencia this year.

(ignore the crappy music, you have been warned!)

I dislike YouTube compilation videos nearly as much as Twitter rumours. Ban them both I say!

Whats wrong with it?
All it proves is, if he's such a 'wide man' as is the general perception amongst everyone here, then why are all of his goals scored from runs within the central third rather then cutting in from wide?, why are none of his assists from wing play?

Mata's versatile, would do much better in the 'Meireles' role from last year then Raul did, and can play wide .. but he's not a one trick pony thats for sure.
