Rafael van der Vaart claims Luka Modric has told him he is happy to remain at Tottenham despite interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Croatian international has declared his intention to move away from White Hart Lane and met chairman Daniel Levy yesterday to discuss his future at the club, with the midfielder being told that he will not be allowed to leave, even if Chelsea return with an improved bid.
Van der Vaart believes it is important that Spurs keep their best players if they want to qualify for the Champions League, and explained that Modric – who returned to training this week – has informed him that he is content to stay put.
"Of course, we want to be in the top four again and we have to keep our good players," he told Sky Sports News.
"He was happy to see us, maybe a little bit disappointed. I can understand him, maybe once in a while it's good to change your club. But he's told me he's happy here and we're happy he's staying."
He continued: "It is great to keep the players and [Modric] is fantastic."
Van der Vaart is also optimistic about next season after a highly impressive maiden year in England in which he scored 13 Premier League goals in 28 games following his £8 million switch from Real Madrid.
He added: "We had a great season, it's going to be harder but if we all stay we'll have a great season."
