For sure, I wonder what the stats are, regarding the reasons people fail. As you say, at the very top of most fields it can come down to the psychological differences. Some players are never the same after a serious injury, some boxers don't know when to quit or never are the same after a big KO etc.

Yes, i think it can make a big mental impact on people. My wifes ex's brother was on the books as United around the same time as Neville, Beckham etc and got released at 19. He had offers from a lot of smaller clubs and yet his mental state at being released was ruined and he turned them all down and gave up on football, when he could've probably had a decent career.

Looks like Lovren's off to Zenit for €12m. He was always a bit mad but never as bad as some made out, but his first season form was always held against him. As a 4th choice CB he would have been fine had he not picked up a niggling injury every 3 weeks.

I have a sneaking suspision that, assuming there's some truth to the Thiago stories, that we won't sign a replacement and instead Fabinho & Hendo will be used at CB if needed and instead will bulk up the midfield even more. Klopp loves a midfielder, especially one that can fill in at the back or front 3.

This is the reason i think we are looking at Thiago imo. Got a few kids coming through aswell though

Gotta keep some players. Karius is a gonna but Origi will stick around.
Origi seems happy enough to be there, get the odd start and come on as an impact sub. He’s been brilliant at times and has wholeheartedly bought into the Klopp ‘never defeated’ style. He’s also improved so much under Klopp. This was a player who was voted into the worst 11 in Ligue 1 before he came to Liverpool!

The problem is you never know what you're going to get from Origi. When he came into the side in the 2nd half of the 15/16 season he had a spell where you thought he was going to become a seriously good player, he then picks up the injury vs Everton and when he comes back the next season he looked half the player. His career with us was probably over at that point. He was sent out on loan the next season and then the summer before last we were trying to sell him. A deal was agreed for him to join Wolves but he refused to leave and the club pretty much froze him out for the first half of last season. Then out of nothing he comes into the side and makes himself a cult hero with goals vs Everton, Barca and in the final and you're thinking we've got a very good back-up player again. This season, with the exception of the Everton game and a few others, his performances haven't been good enough again.

Had everything been normal this summer and we moved for Werner then I'm sure we would have looked to move him on. I still wouldn't bet against him leaving if we can get a decent fee though. I'm sure we're still looking to bring another forward in if we can shift the likes of Origi, Shaqiri etc and with Minamino to feature more and the possibility of Brewster returning (who has been banging them in at Swansea) & even Elliott possibly playing more, there won't be many games for him.

Strange one Origi, he's got all the attributes, tall, strong, quick feet, pacey and can strike a ball relatively well but he just goes missing.

Wouldn't surprise me if he has a couple of phenomenal years when he hits 26-27.

Still no word on Gini signing the damn contract?! Shaq will likely be moved in, mainly because he wants more game time.

No idea about Gini. I'm sure the club want to keep him but he's at a difficult age contract wise. It's going to be his last major contract and he/his agent will want 4-5 years on a big salary which the club will be cautious about giving him. Hopefully a compromise is reached because he's been such a big player for us. I wouldn't be shocked if he stays regardless of signing a new deal - there's more value in keeping him for another season and losing him on a free than accepting a knocked down fee imo.

As for Shaq, I think everybody was looking to move him on this summer. He was always going to be a short term signing for us but the issue now will be finding somebody that will pay us the fee we want. Pre covid you could see him moving to a West Ham or similar for £20m, now it's a bit more finely balanced.

I didn't realise he is still only 25, I thought he must be 27 by now.

I'm not sure if it's a confidence thing or needing something to motivate him but his form is so up and down. The back end of the the 15/16 season he showed all those attributes you mention - he came back from an injury earlier in the season a lot stronger and was bossing CB's and looked like a serious player. Then the next season my clearest memory of him was being beaten to a header by Jack Wilshere vs Bournemouth that cost us the game.

Agree with that. When he's out on the wing I'm shouting at him to skin his man and cut inside but he always runs down the wing, stops and passes it back. When he's playing as a striker, he appears to lack the positional awareness to give himself the chance to score.

Seems to be a 'confidence' player in the Heskey mould but I don't feel he offers anything as a starter or as an impact sub.

Getting worried about him now. No reason he should be stalling when everyone else has seemingly signed immediately.

His circumstances are different tbf. It's always a difficult negotiation when giving new contracts to 29-30 year olds. The player knows it's their last chance of a big contract and clubs don't want to be paying 33/34 year old Gini what they're willing to pay 29 year old Gini.

I'm not massively worried though. I can't see who pays us a big enough fee to make it worthwhile us selling him and offers him a contract significantly more than what we will.

The issue isn't playing but paying. I'm sure Milner's contract extention reflects his age and how big his involvement in the side is. The problem is right now Wijnaldum is a first 11 player and will want a contract to reflect that. For arguments sake lets say that's £150k per week - that's fine in year 1 and 2 but is Wijnaldum a £150k per week player when he's 32-34? I'd guess the sticking point is probably around the length of the deal with Wijnaldum wanting 4-5 years and us wanting to give him 3-4 years.

Happy at 12m for him though I must say. He always had a bit too much of the Skrtels about him for my tastes, everytime he went to tackle it felt to me like a penalty was about to be awarded.

Can easily see Milner moving into coaching, possibly even on into management. I wouldnt be at all surprised if he ends up on Liverpool or Leeds coaching staff in a couple of years.
