Summer Transfer Window 23/24

Why on Earth would United pay Maguire to leave, surely he's worth a fee to someone

Not with his current wages he isn't.

He's on 190kpw until 26/27. Man Utd therefore owe Maguire about £38m. There ain't no way another club is gonna pay a fee anywhere near that.

Be lucky to get £20m. Probably more like £10m and maybe £100kpw. At best. So £10m to Maguire to cover the difference sounds about right.

Which idiots have they found to take him?

We aren't

Are you gonna keep him then? cos no-one else will ever pay him nearly 200kpw again.

I honestly think Utd could do better than Mount. He's an alright player but thats all. Not worth the big bucks. I was rather tentative about the whole idea when Liverpool were linked with him, so happy to see him go elsewhere.

(Sidenote, I'm not all that sold on Mac Allister either tbh, if I was grabbing anyone from Brighton it would be Caicedo)

I think that Mount is drastically underrated. Modern football isn't a game of individuals, but of systems. The team which can build the system to win games most repetitively, and implement that system, will be the most successful. It's very different from the situation 15 years ago where the team with the most superstars on the pitch would win.

The City team over the last few years is a perfect example of this - even before Haaland, they had a system, had players good enough to play within and stick to that system, and they have won the most games. You can say that it's about money spent and the players they've brought in, but they've spent similarly to other high-spending teams, and the difference is that they have bought to a system.

Liverpool are also a great example before this season. When their system worked, a midfield of Henderson, Fabinho, and Wijnaldum was perfect, even though none of them are world beaters (although all were very good at the right point in their careers).

Brighton and Brentford are also great examples of this.

The point is that a system generally won't work with 11 superstars on the pitch - you need players who are the glue. City have players like Stones, Ake, and even to an extent Rodri, Grealish and Bernardo who are integral to their system but don't shine like their biggest players. Mount is one of the best system midfielders out there. He can play multiple roles, is incredibly tidy with the ball, works hard, is excellent positionally, and that all comes with a few years of excellent experience. He's unlikely to set the world alight alone, but will make the players around him look better. To me he's a no-brainer on a free transfer despite his wages, and I'm disappointed he's going to United rather than Liverpool.

I’d prefer Caicedo. Mount just comes across as very… ‘standard’. Perhaps ETH will bring something more out of him, but not enthused.

Of course both may be on the cards (I wish) but we shall see when and if the damn owner situation is sorted.

Doesnt the MUFC negotiation team basically consist of ....

MUFC : How much do you want in wages?
Player : Yes
MUFC : Done ! You have a deal Sir
Vidic tells a funny story about his move from Spartak Moscow to United and how SAf seduced him into joining for less money than he was on! Worth checking out on You Tube Nemanja

Glad we’ve avoided Mount. Just a bang average hyped up English player imo. Think Utd are being a bit silly here.
Like Rice.

I was a big Mount fan when he was playing under Lampard at Chelsea but since the Euros I think he has been pretty poor to average.

Go back and look at the work cup threads and most people on here couldn’t understand how he even got in the England team as he was producing nothing. Thats at lower international level, let alone the PL.

Chelsea are well shot of him.

Mount's a strange one. For a couple of seasons he looked like he was going to become a top class player but he's stalled over the past 12 to 18 months. I think a big issue for him is his position. Although he's played both roles at times, he's neither an 8 nor a wide forward and very few teams play with a number 10 these days.

As for his fee, given his contract situation and the fact that Chelsea are desperate to sell, anything over £50m would be daylight robbery.

You could make that argument about every single player in this Chelsea side really. Not a single one of them has come out of this season with any real credit. There are good players in there though.
