Summer weather thread 2024

British weather has always been unpredictable..

I literally had someone in the my office 20 mins ago saying how crap it is and thought of this thread..

Objectively we've had a weird mix of more rain than the last 2 years, but higher temperatures.

All I know is I have been able to get the roof down on the car more than I normally do and for sure will try not to waste a nice sunny day if it presents itself.

Apologies for the lack in clarification.

As this is a thread for people who enjoy the summer and warm weather, then moaning about it being too cold will be tolerated.

And as for the likes of CaptainRave, if you don’t like it, just move along and ignore the thread. Besides, I actually had quite a few posters suggest I create this thread so we could have a thread with a more positive tone. The too hot and too cold threads are silly and fragmented imo.

Anyway, threads here and hopefully it’s staying.

Anyone feel like making a casual prediction on when this extended spring is likely to change? And I mean really change, not just a single mild day exclusively in the S.E. I'm leaning towards no earlier than July. I just can't see a dramatic change in our fortunes happening any time soon from the things I've seen/read.

This year has been the most dire since I can remember.
Certainly in recent years.

As always.. It's not so much the temperature that makes or breaks it for me, as I have sports I can do in all temps. Even sub zero it's lush to get up a mountain when there's snow on the ground.

What kills it for me is overcast/rain/wind.

Nothing is "fun" in rain and wind. Sure there are things you can do. But wet kit, having to clean everything etc. It's just not Nice.

That for me is what's killed most of the last 9 months. Having to desperately dive out in the single days we get.

Couple that to long winter nights and stupid DST. If those isolated sunny days don't fall. On a weekend? It's gross.

I'm happy with how June is going.. It's not ideal. But there are starting to be more usable days than not.

Was freezing yesterday in Manchester, think it topped out about 11C. Certainly getting fed up of the cold and wet weather when it's supposed to now be summer.

It would have been much more bearable with this weather had we had an early heatwave in March/April.
Can't be classed as freezing unless ice forms, it's cold, chilly or cool

Just checking my weather station:

Sun 8th June - Zero rain, did have a 14C dip at 9 AM, but got back to 16C, it was very cloudy but dry
Sat 7th June - Zero rain, 20C most of the day, nice sunny patches with the odd cloud going over

Sun 2nd June - Zero rain, awesome sun all day, almost hit 26C
Sat 1st June - Zero rain, patchy cloud/sun, was around 20C all day.

Sun 26th May - Almost no rain, just two very minor drizzle. 17C-20C was OK out and about
Sat 25th May - Zero rain, great day, some very patchy odd cloud, but 22-24C all day

Sun 19th May - Belter, 25C, zero rain, sun 99.5% of the day
Sat 18th May - 1 spell of 10 mins of rain, patchy cloud/sun and around 20C all day

Sun 12th May - Great day, Zero rain, some very slight patchy cloud, but 27.2C!
Sat 11th May - Great day, Zero rain, some very slight patchy cloud, but 25C!

Sun 5th May - Started out hot (22C), slowly cooled over the day to 16C, didn't rain until 6PM, had a good day out
Sat 4th May - Zero rain, mainly sunny, hovered around 20C most of the day.

We've had loads of good weekends, if it's rained it's been tiny spells but mainly dry, some absolute mid-summer belters.. Not sure how much better I'd need it.

The Bristol channel and South Wales can take the brunt of the weather though, I lived in South Wales for 8 years and found it not as temperate as around north Gloucestershire.

Yeah I think so to, trying to remember a worse year and I cannot, last year wasnt amazing either, but this year is worse.

Saying that 2020 is teh best year I can remember weather wise, but I remember a lot of the preceeding years 19,18 being pretty decent. 2018 was the Download festival GnR were at and it was bloody nice that year.

I think our climate is changing though, we seem to be getting more cloudy summers, just overcast, everyday, even if its not raining as such.

I can go back to the 70's and I cannot think of a worse overall spring.

I've looked back at my pics for may.

4th, did an amazing walk this day
6th, nice walk this day too
10th - and aurora and kayaking
11th - walking
12th (although a belter of a storm came over)
So 10th - 12th was a lush weekend
19th - kayaking.. And went coast to coast. So lush day here too - must have been still too to do that
25th - and nice walk
27th - another nice walk.

So yeah.. May wasn't so bad!

(go back to April and before.. And my pics get much much worse and less frequent)

10th May was obviously amazing as I was on a tshirt on sea for sunset!
Then went and saw aurora on way home. This was a great day!

Looking back it seems the last week. Of April was when the gloom of the perpetual winter broke and had much more Frequent sun.

Happy to have those 40c days again for a week. I was in heaven!
