Super Mario Bros

I just got back from the Stafford Odeon.

Objectively speaking, I would say that Sonic is still the better film out of Sonic and Mario, but subjectively I enjoyed Mario far more. Mario is closer to its games with the nostalgic 8-bit sounds and the level designs for us middle-aged gamers. A lot of the soundtrack is instantly recognisable, with some nice/unusual arrangements for good measure. Donkey Kong was a nice addition and Peach was awesome with the blue power-up dress. Without spoiling it too much, Mario Kart played a big part as well as in the actual racing, the cars/bikes and the track designs.

Another good point from me is that there was no agenda or politics in Mario, on par with some of the other commens in this thread. If Mario was Disney, then it would be on par with Ralph Breaks the Internet. This was from 2018, a time just before Disney went to the dogs with putting politics into their films. Disney needs to get their head out of the sand, and I say that as a big Disney fan myself.

I'm giving Mario a solid 9 out of 10.

i agree with all of this, i loved it. being a nintendo fan my whole life starting with the nes i was very happy, cant wait to see what they do next.

Biggest box office for a video game adaptation to date. Apparently also the UK's biggest opening for an animated film.

@Pawnless Endgame have you seen Puss in Boots 2 yet? If Mario is 9/10 for you then I’m very intrigued on what you think of that one. I’ve been raving about it on the forums - impossibly good blend of easy watching, humour and serious ‘life contemplating’ themes.

I watched one of the Minions films recently and it was just so empty and soulless compared to PIB2 - it made me sad. Family films don’t have to be so forgettable / redundant.

That Minions film (Rise of Gru) was 4/10 for me and the Sonic films were probably around 6/10 for me.

Puss in Boots 2 is brilliant, love the animation style, bit like Spider-verse. The wolf was pretty terrifying too!

Watched it yesterday. It’s really good. Jack Black totally steals the show though, you forget Chris Pratt is meant to be the “good” guy. Also the plot follows the 1992 film at the start and in the finale.

Solid 8.5/10 for me.

Little snip from the end of the deadline post and its fantastic to see.

"Total annual box office for 2023 for Jan. 1-April 16 is clocking $2.5 billion, +44% over the same period last year."

Just make great movies that people want to come and see.

Now how much is that due to the increased cost of tickets or increased bums in seats it would be hard to get the ratio but great to see none the less.

That wolf is such an insanely good ‘villain’.

One of his lines is so cold (the “poetically, metaphorically…” bit - major plot spoilers so won’t share the whole thing) that in the cinema I was like ‘gooood damnnnnnn!!!‘, proper heebie jeebies. Kids actually screaming and crying because of him.

I agree - terrifying!

I do, I enjoy the experience of the big screen, and it cannot be replicated at home.

Yeap, being deafened by blasting speakers, having people walk past you, sitting uncomfortably nowhere near the centre of the screen, missing bits if you need the loo, having people loudly eat/talk/use a phone etc all just cannot be replicated at home :D

For something "special" I can absolutely understand the desire to see a film on the big screen, Dune for example for myself and maybe some of the summer "CGI-fest blockbusters", but for rom-coms, animation/kids films, comedies etc I think its a waste even if it brings in far more money than streaming alone would do.

I've watched a few films before they are officially released and of the ones I enjoyed I regret not seeing them in the cinema first.
I didn't make it to the cinema to watch Avatar 2.

I do like the cinema but with very long films like that are almost better at home sometimes. Can pause it and go to the toilet, get snacks if needed etc.

I've got quite a decent home setup though - 83" OLED for TV/Movies and wireless Sony Atmos speaker's/subwoofer.

I love how upset some journos in the media are upset because it isn't woke enough
Metoo Bowser is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while.

Nintendo still have Iron grip on their IP’s and reportedly stepped in on the creative direction for this film as it was straying to far away from games.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the major film critic reviews made no mention of this ‘woke’ topic at all.

I don’t doubt that there are some strange opinions, but there are on any subject.

I don’t think this film needs to be a totem for anything… other than for itself and whether it’s a good film or not.
