have you seen Puss in Boots 2 yet? If Mario is 9/10 for you then I’m very intrigued on what you think of that one. I’ve been raving about it on the forums - impossibly good blend of easy watching, humour and serious ‘life contemplating’ themes.
Keep breaking records
I love how upset some journos in the media are upset because it isn't woke enough
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the major film critic reviews made no mention of this ‘woke’ topic at all.
The Granuaid said:The Super Mario Bros Movie review – game over for this lazy animated mess
Kids will probably love this scattershot dash through Nintendo’s most popular properties. But then kids, rarely the most discerning audience members at the best of times, will routinely mistake familiarity for fun – something that this lazy picture exploits extensively. Musical motifs from beloved games, minor characters, nods to the Mario legacy: all were greeted with shrieks of excitable recognition at the screening I attended. The Super Mario Bros Movie is a frantic Easter egg hunt of a film that does the bare minimum to please its loyal existing fanbase. Those less enthralled by the antics of the moustachioed Italian plumber will wonder which of Donkey Kong’s weaponised barrels this joyless, noisy mess was scraped from.
I doubt it, I thought the same when Top Gun Maverick blasted everything else when it came out and showed that everyone wanted a non-woke movie but here we are again.Hopefully, this should be a turning point for Hollywood.
They were involved from the start, I’m sure it was a fully fledged co-production with Illumination. That’s why their logo is at the start and they all have credits etc.Nintendo still have Iron grip on their IP’s and reportedly stepped in on the creative direction for this film as it was straying to far away from games.
It'll hit $1bn easy. According to a quick Google, Guardians Vol 2 made $863m worldwide so I doubt Vol 3 will beat Mario?Movie has done $871.8m globally to date. Biggest movie of 2023 so far (I’d expect Guardians 3 would surpass it).
Super Mario Movie - 7/10 - took my 5 year old son for his first cinema trip yesterday - he's crazy about Mario and was totally engrossed, he kept nudging me and letting me know what certain musical cues and set pieces were, not realising of course i've been around Mario for the best part of 30 odd years. However I obliged him and acted surprised each time.
It's a splendidly crafted movie, clearly made by people with a deep knowledge of the Mario games - it's not something i'd go out of my way to watch but glad i've seen it. I know the collective internet is triggered about Pratt doing the voice but you barely notice it, more jarring is Charlie Day as Luigi. Animation is slick and well realised and I love how they integrated music across a lot of the mario universe games incidentally.
Now got peaches, peaches, peaches rattling around my head.
I play it every time I spot it in the ole YouTube’s.If you type in "mario bros" on Spotify, the film's soundtrack is the top result.
Then you can play Peaches Peaches Peaches for the rest of eternity
It was terrible. Felt like they were contractually obliged to include "its-a-me-a-mario" a certain amount of times
Basically a rip off of Troll 2
The Jack Black Music video was the only good thing about it.
I didn't notice that line but "MamaMia" was quoted FAR too much, especially in the final sequences.
