Supplements the debate/discussion thread

We talking taste, your gains....value for money?

Dont feel you need to justify it or anything. Far too many people post inflated opinions because they feel like they have to prove something or justify a purchase.

You clearly impressed with it and im interested in why, even if it just boils down to it tastes nice and mixes well.

I have always used MP stuff myself...would not mind paying a little more if there was some added value. Especially as MPs prices have been going up.

I would not say taste; to be honest i found nothing wrong with drinking the unflavoured MP impact whey. This does not bother me, as it’s gone in a few gulps - taste should be a minor decision in the choice (if at all).

Yes i would say it mixes very well but does this justify the £40.00 price tag, no! I would rather shake it up a few more times or go to the length of using a blender on saving the cost difference.

However, my personal opinion on this is that it’s the best supplement i have used for both strength gains, and overall improvement while on this supplement. I would say FOR ME this is the best "all in one" on the market and I justify (to myself) paying this price tag.

Only issue I have is the cost per month; I consume near enough two tubs a month of the following and 1 tub of Pharma Whey HT so it’s fairly expensive.

Thanks for that Kai.

I have been tempted to try an all in ones myself. Part the reason I asked about why you liked the one you use.

Currently just mix whey/dextrose/BCAA/creatine from myprotein.

Just the one shake a day post workout.
Rest is food...which can be quite expensive as well to be fare.
Not a cheap whey (haha) to live this!

Scimx omni mx hardcore was my first recent venture to branded all In one since mp hurricane...

The taste alone ensures I don't miss a shake, its thick, filling, well mixing and has made noticeable gains for me. Pricey at £49 every two or so week but when I work it out, the 90g of protein a day, the creatine and the extra stuff mixed in wouldnt be too cheap for me to get into my diet anyway. It's convenience males it very effective with me.

If you don't like to spend about £3 a day on supplements then go as cheap as possible. If you don't mind, then be open to trying branded stuff with a reputation for flavour and mixability etc

Out of interest, do you not consider having a shake upon wakeup or just before bedtime? or is this supplemented with slow release foods etc as oppose to a shake to achieve this?

Been following leangains IF past few months.
So I eat between 13:30-21:30.

Break the fast with chicken or tuna in wholemeal pitta.
Same again 2-3 hours later.
Gym at 5:30.
Shake after and then main meal within the hour.
Something like two chicken breasts in some kind of sauce with 200g Quinoa is typicaly what I have been having.
Then some Quark later on to finish.

My maint is calculated around 2200ish.
Above gives me 20% ontop of that.
On off days I take out some of the carbs, increase fat and aim for around 20% below maint.

Weight on scale is staying pretty similar, but my lifts are going up and I can see areas leaning out. Veins in my arms slowly becoming visible etc.

Im thinking of dropping cals to maint on lifting days and -20% on off days just to speed things up and get rid of these last bits of fat.

If I can get to around 10% bf I think that would be an ideal place to bulk up from.
Im not aiming to be a mass monster...so slow and steady is fine. Strength is also something I thinks important. Hence me doing stronglifts.

I need a bit of supplement advice from you guys, if you wouldn't mind.

I train MMA/BJJ at least 5 days a week. By the time I've finished training, got home, cooked my dinner, washed up etc, it's way too late as I have work in the morning so I'm looking to ditch my post training meal and swap it for a recovery/meal replacement shake.

It needs to be fairly high in carbs but relatively low in sugar (I'm diabetic).

I've been looking at total gainer from my protein. Would this be suitable?

Thanks.

Myprotein Recovery XS

I used this for my post workout shake when I was on my pre-contest diet, it's got all you need in terms of carbs/protein and bcaas, creatine and glutamine so it's packed with good ingredients, and it's good value, use MP68619 for another 5% off as well

If you don't mind spending a fair bit more, CNP Pro Recover is very good, it's what I'm using now for my off season

But I'd say Recovery XS is probably going to do you just fine :)

why not make your own up? using protein powder, peanut butter, a banana, and almond/cashew powder and full fat milk.

throw it in a blender and blend until done.

simples. better than replacing a full meal with a powder substitute.

I like the idea but I detest a couple of those ingredients. :p

I will look into making my own up but would the total gainer be suitable (albeit not the most ideal solution) or is there something else pre-made which would be better?

How on earth does your chosen brand of protein affect your strength gains?? That is all placebo, or you changed something else in your training.

I have no problem with you liking it, but I wouldn't want anyone reading your post to spend more than they need to.

Probably to keep them in line with the competition. It may look good, but I bet it's just those that appear on the price checker cheaper.

Is he not talking about an all-in-one? PHD Synergy ISO 7

So its not just protein, its creatine, carbs etc etc.
Though you could also argue they are available seperately and would/could have the same effect.

Though the brands would/do counter that by saying they add the 'perfect ratios' in their special 'Matrix' and addition bits and bobs like certain vitamins, to make them more effective.

Whether thats mumbo jumbo though is up for debate and I think most would say the claims are rubbish or atleast inflated.
But would be more effective than protein alone.

Creatine does not improve strength gains, and people can eat carbs anyway. There is no perfect formula, just correct nutrition, training and rest.

So yes, it's mumbo jumbo.

Im pretty sure I have read some pubmed studies on creatine and they showed that the group taking creatine had both larger increases in lean muscle gains compared to the placebo group as well as better strength gains.

Im at work at the moment. Once I get home ill see if I can find it.

This may very well be placebo - while on my "chosen" brand i have seen great gains. I agree no doubt that you get an equal products a lot cheaper. However, as mentioned for me (personally) i found this product to aid recovery, improve strength and help reach my goals.

what does creatine actually do then?

i heard it was one of the top 5 supplements you could ever take and it has been scientifically proven.

Regardless about how you feel about it personally, there is no mechanism for any of the ingredients to do anything additional compared to even just basic plain whey.

Ingredients:
Whey Protein Concentrate , Whey Protein Isolate - just whey with different absorption rates. Gastric emptying will make that slightly irrelevant though

Creatine - discussed

Glutamine - good for recovery, but 2.6g isn't very much

Taurine - largely irrelevant

Maltodextrin, Dextrose - just sugars

Methoxyisoflavone - not proven to do anything

The rest is just vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Psycho, creatine aids nutrient loading into your muscles, and that's more or less it. This might help with hypertrophy to some extend, but won't do much for strength

I'm not sure fascias are a limiting factor in anyone's growth, but it does promote more water to enter the muscle which pulls nutrients with it. This is completely irrelevant to strength though.
