Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Always too much protein and getting too big and overtraining. How about everyone gets in the gym, drinks their shakes and maybe takes a bit of time off the pub. So so many skinny 20 somethings worried about high level stuff thats irrelevant to 99% of the population.

UE :p
Nothing wrong with showing interest in some health concerns surrounding protein consumption.

I've been on high protein for 9 years, and I'm still alive... for now.

Health is an important aspect of going to the gym, so if for any reason I am causing my body any long term damage that I can prevent, I'm all ears.
You don't have to worry mate, the risks from being ~200g/day are very small provided that you have no pre-existing problems. <-- this is obviously not first hand knowledge, however.

Whether we need that much for maintenance/growth, and with what other macro combinations, ratios and general dietary protocols, is a question for another discussion.

it just bugs me that when i personally know people who live mostly on haribo starmix chips and cheese and cans of stella without dropping dead, someone healthy and fit in the gym worrying about their protein intake (when most dont eat enough) is irritating not that i really care lol

I agree UE.

But what the debate is about is whether or not we need uber doses of protein - I argue that it's just not needed and it's just daft, and it does have potential detrimental effects.

If you're piling me into the skinny 20 (I wish I was still in my 20s) haribo mix eaters then you're being silly :p

However, I agree that people need to stop worrying and get their arses into the gym - end of. Couldn't agree more, and eat some decent amount of foods. However, too many people think, oh if I don't eat y*x divided by a^c amounts of proteins then they won't grow etc... unless you're on silly supps (;)) and training for hours every day for several years it doesn't apply to 99% of the people in general.

I can only use myself as an example, but I've never gone nuts on protein, I ate what I needed to recover, grow, and feed myself. Sure there was a bias towards protein and fats rather than **** carbs but that's not to say I was weighing everything and thinking "**** I'm skinny today cos I only had 4 tonnes of protein yesterday..."

I'm just a little fed up with all this "I MUST TAKE A SHAKE FOR ANABOLICS BRAH!!!".

What ever happened, to eating well, training like a mother****er, and sleeping like a king?

yeah agree FF, but in your case not so much others, you are older and you have also achieved good things in the gym. Health becomes more important in time i guess. Hopefully we will have solved organ printing by the time my heart explodes in a steroid induced convulsion, lest i end up like john coffi

Health is important, and should be looked at before anything else - or at least along with a weight training programme. Sure, to be reasonable, and level headed taking lots of protein shakes aren't going to kill you, but so many people take them thinking, or believing the hype and the advertising, and I just find that pretty sad.

Someone at my gym said "I'm not growing, but I've bought this really good protein...." - yet his diet was about enough to feed an anorexic flea. EAT MORE ****ING FOOD! IT's that simple, and stop doing bro curls in the mirror.

People think it comes over night - it takes years (well it took me years as I spent ages experimenting, learning and taking steps forward and back) to get some good decent size/progress. That's the problem, people are so impatient they want fast results.

well it all comes back to the total ignorance of whats actually going on out there, kid watches movie, reads magazines, sees that Christian Bale goes from skinny to beefcake in a year, i mean celebrities wouldnt use drugs surely not, but in interviews he talks all about the protein shake diets and 24/7 training and kids assume this is normal. They read FLEX magazine where massive freaks constructed of chinese growth hormone talk about their celltech gains and how hydroxycut keeps them lean without even the thought of a needle (or 10) crossing their innocent hard working faces.

The whole industry is rotten and bull"£$%, nothing to do with health and well being, just about selling magic beans to the tragically naiive masses by flummoxing them with more psudoscience and supposition than the average middle american extremist christian cult. Everything you see is fake, its all a show to suck your cash from your sad insecure wallet, because if only you had the body right? Everyone would love you. They wont and you'll never get it because its not easy and the reason your sad is that you only do whats easy.

But the truth is everyone with the body uses chicken whey and needles and laughs at you and your maximuscle fuelled dreaming.

So true,

I've accepted that my progress will be slow (Along with my weight loss), you've gotta be in it for the long haul.

No quick fixes, no magic cures - just a few things which can help (exercise, eating better quality food, some IF can help a little it seems) - but the main bulk of getting in shape involves eating less (or more pending on how fat/skinny you are), moving & lots of time.

People seem fine with eating less & moving, but the long time part seems to be the killer for most - which is where these companies make the money from.

170-200g of Protein for me per day, unless it's a bicep day then it goes up to 340-400.

noimsayin?

But seriously, i get about 170-200g per day as i feel confident consuming that amount and it won't change.

Indeed, from speaking to various people over the last year, they just want results NOW. I'm aware that in the initial stages I was farting around a lot with food and training (hell, got to start somewhere and no one knows everything at the start) but now I know what I need to be doing somewhat with regards to food (thanks to Steediem yourself and a few others) and training (thanks to the two meets I've been to, talking to people on here, LiE and Syla5 recently and also Ice)

I've always been aware that things won't happen overnight, and you can see why people do get frustrated. I'm actually at a stage now where I'm happy with how I am looking due to my cut, and hopefully will see some nice results once I start doing a lean bulk. As for training, it is coming along nicely, you can only go up.

thats just a rant by the way not aimed at anyone not even delvis lol

I'm coming towards the end of a 5kg tub of protein and really debating if I need to be having so much, if any.

I get 200g of protein daily from chicken, tuna and eggs. Then 4 scoops of protein powder on top of that.

Think I might just sack off the protein shakes and drink some milk instead.

I've just got the 2nd Edition of Wendlers 5/3/1 and in his NoV diet section he actually recommends 4 x 50g protein shakes per day!

protein shakes are for 1st thing and after train m8 its functional nutrition ffs why does no one actually see further than 'protein is protein'Whey is the fastest absorbing protein available. Use it when its appropriate and when food is not. You dont 'sack off protein shakes' any more than you sack off 'squats' because your legs are too big.

Get more protein and use it when appropriate not when some schedule says you should!

I have it first thing and after training. What I'm trying to decide is will it make any difference if I stop and just drink some milk pwo instead.
