Supplements the debate/discussion thread

For those that supplement with Vitamin D, what sort of dosage are you taking?

My new tablets are 5000iu rather than 1000iu like my other ones...

I realise that it will already be covered in the thread somewhere but to save me trawling through is anyone able to recommend a good place to get some coconut oil? Generally using rapeseed oil atm and thought I'd give it a try

Supplements that actually work?

A longstanding argument amongst most fitness circles is the actual benefit (or curse) of sports related supplements.

The biggest issue is, as always, trying to pin down the benefits to the supplement, or if they are just a product of hardwork, healthy eating and good form training regimes.

I'd be interested to know your own experiences with the products out there (legal ones only, thank you!).

Here are mine...

Protein Powder
i've had the misfortune of using Holland and Barratt's strawberry powder. I had purchased 6 tubs of the stuff during one of their frequency penny sales and felt some monetary inclination to see it through. I did not like it.
The powder mixed very poorly with milk or water, leaving lumps that became a chore to consume. The taste was nigh medicinal, and far too sweet. I do not feel that I had any positive effects from the consumption of this product.

Next up, my long-standing favourite is ISO-7 Synergy. I have the Strawberry Cheesecake tubs of this. It apparently has all the BCAAs, Creatine and Protein that you could want in two scoops. It mixes well with skimmed milk and, at a push, water too. Taste-wise, it is quite mild and not intense or overpowering. I don't medicate this stuff, but merely have the stated 2 scoops after a workout providing it isn't too late in the night.

It is my belief that this does help with recovery and minimises the aches/burn afterwards/next day. As for building muscle, I feel it has a minor positive effect, however I don't consume enough to have an establish effect. The typical water-based variant of the shake packs around 300kcals, so it can serve as a meal replacement too.

Creatine
I've only used Holland and Barratt's High Strength Creatine, but found that it basically made me want to urinate every 30mins. I have not dabbled in Creatine any more aside from that present in the ISO-7 shake.

Jack3D - Pre-Workout/During Workout 'Energy' Stim
I've used this twice and then threw it out. The first time I was infused with energy, but found the drink mix sickly sweet, reminiscent of some childhood pick-n-mix sweet. The second time, the next day, I passed out after using the same dose as the first day. It was a very uncomfortable side-effect, and frankly, I would not recommend the product to people who may be sensitive to stimulants as these.

It is worth pointing out that I don't believe I have a sensitivity to stims, as I previously have managed to use 6 Red Bulls a day (a few years ago) and even now, caffeine intake can be fairly high.

PES Alpha-T2
Perhaps my first controversial product. I did not notice any effects using this except my pockets became lighter.

PES Erase
Second controversial product - this is purported to inhibit the production of oestrogen in the body which serves to hinder storage of lipids/fats as well as retaining more testosterone from being broken down.
The only effects that I noticed were that I had a well-documented side-effect - 'dry joints'. Best described as bones grinding on bones when you moved your limbs. A horrible sensation.
I would not recommend this, except to burn cash.

So, there we have my brief perspectives on supplements; by no way concise, scientific or conclusive, but hopefully of some use to people considering trying any of the supplements mentioned.
