Supplements the debate/discussion thread

I realise that it will already be covered in the thread somewhere but to save me trawling through is anyone able to recommend a good place to get some coconut oil? Generally using rapeseed oil atm and thought I'd give it a try

I just get my coconut oil from TPW now. *ahem* WR210 *ahem* :p

This has been done to death, and with the greatest respect in the world you're not really adding any new depth to the debate :p

A longstanding argument amongst most fitness circles is the actual benefit (or curse) of sports related supplements.

The biggest issue is, as always, trying to pin down the benefits to the supplement, or if they are just a product of hardwork, healthy eating and good form training regimes.

I'd be interested to know your own experiences with the products out there (legal ones only, thank you!).

Here are mine...

Protein Powder

It's just food - it's adding more protein and calories to your daily intake. You're not "on" anything, if you see it as just a way to bolster your calories then you're looking at it the right way. Sure, not all proteins are equal, isolates, concentrates, casein based etc... or mixes are all slightly different, and some have more sweetners and other crap in them, but ultimately they're just food.

Creatine
I've only used Holland and Barratt's High Strength Creatine, but found that it basically made me want to urinate every 30mins. I have not dabbled in Creatine any more aside from that present in the ISO-7 shake.

Again, lots of different types, but it's one of the longest and most well researched and used supplement. Our body makes it, and it is a proven supplement which enhances power output.

Ive tried different brands of peanut butter.
The best Ive had is MyProtein, 1kg tub. Nice and cheap and higher quality than anything in the supermarket.
Bulkpowders peanut butter is less crunchy and more liquidy.
I prefer MyProtein brand.

I wouldnt even think about buying peanut butter from a supermarket now, unless they gave 75% off. Whole Earth charge too much of a margin on their product.

Wholearth or your own is probably the best quality you can get - but if you want to buy in bulk TPW do a good tub, but the problem with TPW or MP or anyones online they're just not as crunchy as wholearth or other decent organic crunchy PBs you can get.

Just buy lots of nuts - roast them, and blend them. Then you can control how you want them.

I can buy a kilo of peanuts, roast them, and with the electricity used even with blending them, it comes to under £2 for 1kg.

That is a lot of work, especially when MP and BP both offer 100% peanut butter, for not a lot of money.

I find that Wholeearth has a very firm texture, but they add palm oil and I think salt as well. I also find that taste is not as nutty as MP.

MP crunchy is "slightly" liquidy, in comparison, but it is pure. And is very peanuty. Texture if firm, but not super firm like WholeEarth.

BulkPowders is more liquidy, but is quite nutty.

For me, of the 3 above, I've tried, rankings are:

1. MyProtein crunchy
2. Bulk Powders crunchy
3. WholeEarth
4. Tesco - I wouldnt buy this. I have a half eaten jar of this in my cupboard - never again.

I have a food processor and usually make my own, but been getting a bit lazy recently.

Its a lot of work
And when you factor in the roasting costs and time/effort involved, I dont think its as economical as the bulk peanut butter providers (above).

BTW, for those who havent tried, Almond butter is "ok".
In protein shakes this works nicely and I would say that it has a biscuity taste when mixed in a protein shake.
I do prefer peanut butter (stronger taste).

I have factored it in - and it's still more fun and satisfying and yields more and is very little work - and available quicker than waiting for a deliver.

I'm not criticising you, I'm just spelling out the plain facts. :)

I'm not lazy and I enjoy cooking and high quality foods. Each to their own. I do my own mixes of different nut butters too - and can get the consistency that I want as well.

The stuff I make is more expensive, but the best nut butter I’ve had. I don’t just use peanuts; I also use almonds, cashews, macadamias and a few others that I can’t remember. I also over roast them a tad, as I find it gives a nice flavour.

My main gripe with homemade nut butter is cleaning the food processor afterwards. :o

Are you buying nuts which aren't fit for human consumption and meant to be fed to birds? Because there is no way I can get a kg of peanuts for £2 anywhere never mind after adding in roasting and blending costs, wastage and cleaning costs.

Ok so I exaggerated a little it's around £3.40 a kilo. Still a lot cheaper and more satisfying (and to my tastes) than over £10 from a brotein store.

It really isn't complicated to understand is it? I guess for some it is. :/

Well all that hassle and messing about as well as how potentially harmful those nuts are isn't worth saving £6 every 2-3 months for me tbh.

I know roasting kills the fungus on them but what if someone got a hold of them before you roasted them, etc. Where would I store a 10kg sack of them also?

I am a frugal buyer and like a good deal but it honestly doesn't work for me tbh.

I may however just buy normal nuts of different varieties to try out some blends, I was given walnuts, hazelnuts and some other varieties in a nut cracker gift set thing so will see how that goes first of all.

Any blends people can reccomend?

As for straight peanut butter b and m has great deals sometimes. I don't really care whether its organic or has some added oil either tbh because its eaten in such small quantities I doubt it makes any difference.
