Supplements the debate/discussion thread

I'm the guy a few pages back asking if any supplements can help after my ACJ reconstruction surgery...

I've been taking mega cissus and 'Fuse' a glutamine powder both from MyProtein. Obviously I've no idea how beneficial it has been but I've got full range of movement back now. Been trying to just use my arm as normal which is obviously still limiting and there's no strength but I'm definitely getting better.

Feels like major DOMS all around my shoulder though which I guess is understandable from the muscles being worked again :)

Good to hear.

Now do your mobility and strengthening exercises to make sure you're not put in this position again. :)

Supplementation with regard to healing CAN have an effect but - as most of them aren't patented - those effects are unclear. The biggest long-term benefits will come from better strength, better mobility and good diet. :)

Yeah it has become quite clear I need a bit more meat. I'm an ectomorphic road cyclist though :p

I have a physical job though so I always considered myself fit and strong... Maybe not enough so...

Maybe end of this week I'm gonna go swimming, see what I can do :)

Definitely make sure you work on strengthening your shoulders once they're up to it, 3 years ago my shoulders were so unstable I could dislocate them in my sleep which is not a nice wake up.
All the hospital could say after taking scans was they couldn't see anything obvious causing it but they wanted to open me up anyway, I refused due to it being my final year at uni and due to the fact there's a high chance it would have ended with my shoulders being no better.
I just made sure I done plenty of shoulder work and touch wood my shoulders are now more stable than ever and I no longer get niggles when heavy benching.

You are an ectomorphic whatever bexause you don't eat enough. ;)

Thanks for that, I've never had any troubles with my shoulders but then I don't 'lift' hopefully swimming is gonna provide the workout I need in that department. Also it'll be too training for an Ironman Lanzarote if I ever pluck up the courage...

Do you honestly believe that? I've tried, but then I'm young and disorganised, hopefully I'll eat much better once me and the mrs move into our first house :)

Swimming was actually the way I dislocated my shoulder for the first time and well before I ever really started lifting so I wouldn't put all your faith in it.

I don't think dislocation a too much if a hazard as my injury was my collar bone picking out behind the acromium, all on top of the shoulder. Admittedly the muscles wastage could be an issue around my rotator cuff.

Yes, I am unafraid that I do. :)

A lot of people think they eat loads when - in fact - they probably just about scrape the daily recommended amounts (i.e. 2500kcals/day) and don't balance their macro/micro nutrients correctly.

Try the following two steps:

1) Work out your daily requirements using a BMR calculator.
2) Keep an honest food diary for a week and see how it totals up.

If you then decide to hit the gym, apply the following principle:

3) Eat EVERYTHING. Even if you're full. For a week. And THEN tell me you're eating enough. ;)

It's basically the same as the morbidly obese messes saying they can't help it it's genetic, no it's because you EAT EVERYTHING TUBBY!

Apart from in this case it's because YOU DON'T EAT EVERYTHING AND THEN SOMEONE ELSES PORTION TOO, SKINNY!

I'll take that advice once I'm fit again.

I've always eaten a good amount but never watched what I've eaten. Try to stay off fried stuff but generally-very roughly calculated in over 2000kcal/day plus 1200kcal of mass building protein stuff when I'm cycling a lot.

Well... if you think you need about 2500kcals/day just to get by with a modern (i.e. not very active) job, then you need to start aiming higher.

If your job is physical, then you need more of everything. If you then cycle on top of that, you need even more. :)

Whether I'd choose a floppy tuna sandwich or a protein bar is a tough call... I'd probably go for some pre-cooked chicken, salad and an avocado :p

Cost, my friend. Cost.
Tuna sandwich for £1.50 is going to be significantly cheaper than 'pre-cooked chicken, salad and an avocado'.

I'm not stating people shouldn't take supplements, but just realise that there is a huge mark up on the prices

What about unflavoured whey protein concentrate? Is there a huge mark-up on this item?

There is if you don't buy it from MP/TPW/GN - it's easy to forget a lot of people buy ULTRA MEGA GAINZ 9000 protein that costs about three times the price of the big bags from the bulk providers.

But if you're spending £25 on a dozen protein bars, and you get 2x more nutrition from spending the same on chicken, salad and an avocado which is better value for money?

Can you afford NOT to eat good quality foods?
