Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Well that is wonderful can't have my Flahavans organic oats as it bloats me something stupid even with a small amount. Neither can I have my Meridians crunchy peanut butter as I am more allergic to peanuts than I thought I was. :(

Try soaking the oats overnight before adding them to your shake, that may make them easier for you to digest

Ok I'll try that. Would whacking it in a blender and turning it in to a flour like texture help with digestion? As I don't remember having this much bother with Ready Break, I hate hitting the gym bloated.

It certainly wouldn't hurt.

Just a thought is it possible you've got a gluten intolerance?
Oats don't naturally contain gluten but they are often processed on the same lines as other things that do so can become cross contaminated.

I have considered that but I eat granary bread and whole wheat pasta without a problem.

Just a thought...

Could it be the lactose in the milk?

I've found going off milk, yoghurt and most of the cheese I used to eat has almost eliminated the bloated stomach/abdomen I routinely acquired in the hours after milk consumption.

Also helped with "slowing rapid gut motility," too. :D

I'm the last person to advocate going off milk/dairy/whatever, because I absolutely love it.

In the past I have had Ready Brek although crap compared to steel cut oats is still oats and that didn't bloat me like this so I'm pretty sure I need to blend it into a flour like texture which should help with digestion.

So had some stomach flu thing in march/april and my brain is associating the feeling of nausea with my protein shakes and chicken.

Making for a difficult return to a decent diet :/

Having tried many different supplements, foods, etc over the years for DOMS I've finally found a solution that really works. I have found others that help and I've found a combo of these totally eliminates all muscle soreness and at almost 40 years old, significantly reduces all other aches and pains from joints and tendons (Please note I'm talking about regular, I'm getting older aches and pains that happen regardless of how well you train, not injury type pain)

The absolute number 1 top of the pile by a large margin is:

  1. Tart Cherry Juice - It is amazing. Specifically Biona Organic Tart Pure Cherry Juice is what I've been using. I've tried the stuff from the supermarket from concentrate and while it does help it's not the same. There are some ridiculously high prices on the net, be careful as some of the cheaper one's are for 200ml bottles which are tiny. As a guide I get 5x 1 litre bottles for under £20 inc P&P, so less than £4 per litre bottle and you really don't need much per serving.
  2. Fruit - I have been having a bowl of pomegranates / blueberries / strawberries / kiwi / pineapple / Chia seeds along with a bio active yoghurt after my PWO meal. Really does help with aches and pains aswell as being extremely nutritious.
  3. Fish Oil - I found since taking just one high strength fish oil (80% EPA/DHA) PWO has helped massively with aches and pains. This is now my protocol for fish oil, I just take one after a workout, I don't take them at any other time. Very cost effective. (less cost effective but I find very helpful with aches and pains is krill oil, I use this sparingly when my knee's or back start to complain, really helps)
  4. EAA's / BCAA's - If taken at quite a high dosage and mixed with Taurine and lots of water then these can also go a long way to reducing the severity of DOMS, though they don't totally alleviate the pain. I've found 10g-15g of BCAA's with 1g of Taurine to be effective. I wasn't going to include this in the list as I don't really use this protocol anymore but I've found it one of the most effective until I tried those above. It's not that cheap either!

The tart cherry juice is head and shoulders the best standalone, throw in some additional help and you'll feel fresh as a daisy next morning, even if you're an old crow like me :) There are reported other useful foods but these are what I use and find most effective.

Any other combo's people use?

There have been studies and there's lots of info on google about it but basically Tart cherries contain cyclo-oxygenase inhibitory flavonoids and anthocynanins with have high antioxidant and anti inflamatory properties. What's special about them is they actually prevent DOMS, whereas other remedies help treat the discomfort.

Another huge benefit is they also contain melatonin and they improve sleep, which I can testify to be true :)

Yes, that Poliquin dude from Canada was talking about blueberry juice for the same reason: very rich in anti-oxidants which mop up a lot of the nasties produced by exercise...

I use TDT recovery spray, hands down one of the best supplements I've ever used. http://transdermaltechnology.co.uk/research/recovery-spray/

Whats wrong with it? Transdermal application seems quite an innovative way of doing it.

Probably affects the cost though.
