Protein and calcium should be your first two stops at an absolute minimum. If you think of the healing process as the same as your workout recovery, it's no different (just much more traumatic). This is one instance where glutamine has been shown to improve recovery rates (i.e. after traumatic injury).

COlloquially, I have heard cissus quadrangularis is actually very good at speeding trauma recovery (IIRC, the Sanskrit for the herb actually translates to "bone healer")... I was dubious but bought some for a bro (at great expense, mind) at he reportedly felt significantly less pain and improved mobility after an ACL reconstruction when using it. The limited amount of science behind this supports notions of improved healing, but the evidence body is very, very small because drug companies can't make anything out of it.

Good luck with your recovery!

Protein is protein no matter what time of day, have it when you want there's no "best time" as such. Also if training frequent aim for 1g protein per 1lb bodyweight, I'd try have no more than 2 scoops a day and eat meats and other foods for obvious reasons. If your eating enough protein with 1 scoop stick with that.

There is a "best time" for taking protein, especially for those wanting to fit a supplement or two in per day. This is aimed at people who train frequently like you mentioned.

Search nitrogen balance or protein timing in any sporting field and there should be a recommendation to promote positive nitrogen balance.

There is also timing of different types of protein, i.e Milk, whey, casein, soy etc and which one does a better job of producing a positive nitrogen balance.

Throwing a supplement in for the sake of being a supplement wouldn't be something I would do.

Starting Stronglifts 5x5 on Monday with a 500 calorie surplus, would it be worthwhile taking creatine as well or does it not make a massive amount of difference at this stage? It's dirt cheap so not fussed on the cost side of things.

The only situation where supplementation timing is important is if you're taking caffeine based supplements before a workout. Otherwise it's all a big con from the supplements industry.

Learn, read, study how supplements behave and make up your own mind and your own regimen on when to take your supplements to suit your lifestyle and training choices.

There is no "anabolic window", you don't need shed loads of whey protein. Some supplements do have an effect on metabolism, and of course taking them before bed won't be conducive to sleep, but don't get fussed on taking x supplements every y hours z times a day.

To be honest, unless you're an elite athlete a lot of this will be a waste anyway.

I think this is key.
If you are an elite athlete you need to look at every single area, where you can make (small) gains. But for joe public, its not so crucial.

I am a great believer in supplements BUT there are some supplements like taking Whey Isolate vs Concentrate, which I just cannot understand. Isolate carries a price premium, yet people buy into it.

My own personal (anecdotal) experience tells me that I gain the most power (lift heaviest) in my workout, the next day, when I am eating bread and tuna, with butter. If I have eat lots of this the previous evening, the following day, I can lift heavy.

Instead, if I drink lots of whey protein and and some carb source (eg. oats, shredded wheat), the evening before, I dont get the same power boost the following day. I'm not sure if anybody else has experienced this (whey vs natural food)?

The only supplement that I believe cannot be attained through a natural source is a pre-workout formula which contains caffeine and creatine. All my heaviest lifts have come when a pre-workout formula has been taken.

IMO, caffeine is the most potent legal supplement on the market and the best thing about it - its cheap and available from all local supermarkets.

Creatine is one of the few supplements that has actually been proven to work. Not sure how much effect it will have for a beginner, I take myproteins creapure stuff. Never given me liver or kidney issues but I drink a tonne of water anyway.

I have to be careful with caffeine myself, if I drink coffee before workouts I've experienced rapid palpitations before at the end of deadlift sets. Causes no pain but certainly doesn't feel normal.

I bought Animal Pak yesterday.

Well I bought 2 tubs of them for £37.

I know its expensive for multivits but Im a bit of a lazy git sometimes and the convenience of all of them in little packets is nice. I have read they are good quality too so I figure Ill give them a go.

I got them from Discount Supplements with a code for 20% off.

Ill tell you if I feel remotely different in the upcoming weeks :D

Oh, and some of them are MASSIVE. Quite a mission to swallow em :)

I've actually laid off multi vits for now, especially ones where the doses seem massive. Studies have shown it can actually be harmful taking ridiculous RDA percentages daily. All I take is cod liver oil, garlic capsule (helps clear my skin up), and b12.

What are folks thoughts on this website...

http://examine.com/

Seems to be really in depth and common sense information on supplementation.

However i'm quite a noob with any supplement info and it could just be all nonsense.

Could someone smarter than me take a look and let me know your thoughts.
