Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Soy, whey, rice, pea or hemp brotein...

Whey is like milk, soy is like soy milk that goes thick really quickly and pea is just vile.

But if you are a pescatarian (which I don't get but won't judge!) then just eat loads of fish: it's higher in creatine than beef or whatever, so...

Well, however you cut it that's a lot of fish per day to reach the recommendations. I just had two haddock fillets for a total of 30g of protein. And i mean, i like fish but that much, every day is a bit of a stretch on both my tastes and my wallet.

I just had a quick look on MFP (so this may be inaccurate) but 100g of haddock dry-fried in a pan is supposedly 36 grams of protein. To be honest, that doesn't sound like it's crazily wrong to me either.

Are you eating breaded frozen haddock fillets or something?

For reference, I just had a steak that was 300g and though it was very filling it wasn't exactly ridiculously big and was fairly cheap as I chose a cut of meat that isn't overpriced (I realise that this isn't quite so easy with fish though).

perma, that sounds about right.
Remember, protein based foods are expensive, which is why many eat "normal" food and supplement with whey protein, which is comparatively cheap.

Myprotein have a pretty good offer at the minute on their whey concentrate. It works out at £5.69/KG for unflavoured if you do it right and combine it with a referral code. Use "60SPECIAL" with 2x5KG unflavoured in the basket.

It's basically just a label filler on energy drinks there's so little in them it'll make next to no difference to anything.

Do you have a suggested does for this? There seems to be conflicting information online. Thanks :)

Is this possible to do for smaller amounts? Getting 2.5kg bags home from work is annoying enough already...

I guess so, the "60SPECIAL" code will work with any basket over £60 as far as I know, but the good thing about using it like this is that the Impact whey has an offer on already so is reduced.

Ah yeah... £60 minimum makes sense and is totally obvious. I'm kind of tired sorry :)

I might see if anyone I know wants to split an order. I need some other supplements but I don't think it'll all add up to 60 pounds.

What's the dealio with regards to creatine and creatinine? There are a few things on (good ol') wikipedia that make creatinine sound like a common ingredient in various supplements but then the info about that being a bad thing other than it could be misinterpreted as a marker for you having kidney issues are vague. Can anyone shed some light on it?

Creatinine is what your body produces by breaking down creatine phosphate. Creatine is what you'll be seeing in supplements and as its own supplement

So the whole note about 44% of creatine supplements containing creatinine is either not true or doesn't matter because ingesting excess creatinine doesn't do anything bad?

I'd be surprised if that was the case given creatinine is a waste product in the body. Your body wouldn't do anything with it.

Taking excess creatine can be bad however, and will cause high levels of creatinine in blood tests which can be an indicator of renal health

Definitely agreed on the whole excessive creatine intake point. I guess I was just a little confused by the excess creatinine thing and whether or not it really mattered.

I agree that the 44% figure sounds a little iffy - and once again, it's from Wikipedia (and I haven't read the citation properly).

Taurine...

Any suggested doses/timings/etc. There's a reasonable amount of broscience out there.

Places like examine.com suggest that 2-3g daily is okay though doesn't make any reference to timings. This makes me think that timings aren't that important.

However, the packaging suggests 1g pre-workout and 1g before bed. Someone on here mentioned that it's good to aid sleep so the before bed thing kind of makes sense.

Would 1-2g in the morning as part of my "take every damn supp in the world" routine followed by 1g before bed be a reasonable approach?

I've also seen a bit of discussion about taurine and depression. Bit of a concern for me as I used to have fairly major depression problems (which have pretty much been resolved by me getting off my arse and doing loads of exercise...but I wouldn't want to chance slipping back). Any thoughts on this?

There are fun experiments on dosing taurine before a heavy night out due to its apparent mild protective effect (supposedly reduces hangovers)... that's pretty much all I know it does to any significant effect.

Your proposed approach is fine insomuch as there isn't any reason to not use it, nor any better proposed way...

Yeah...so it's basically one of those "probably does nothing but you never know" kind of supplements?

I thought I'd pick some up based on the very vague possibility it may help in some infinitesimal way with my recovery from a minor surgery. I suspect I'll end up dropping it after this pack is finished and I'm back to foightin' fitness.
