Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Only when I start starving to death. Not from eating whey protein.

If only I was as aware of precisely what my body's biochemistry was doing at any one point as you are. :)

As posted, before you quoted it out of context, it is one of a couple of theories: gluconeogenesis is a valid pathway that fits the pattern, as is the one that suggests the body reacts to rapidly available amino acid sources by producing ibsulin to shuttle them to heeded tissue... Etc.

And besides, my initial point was not that all the whey consumed gets turned into glucose. ;)

So next time you try to do an Internet thing and "do you even..." one of my posts, Please have the courtesy to:

- read the post, and
- quote the whole bit that is relevant.

I am very happy to discuss this sort of thing and even more so to learn something new, but you aren't helping on either of those counts... :(

Regardless, happy new year, and many gains for 2015! :)

What are peoples thoughts on ZMA? The amount of proper 'deep' sleep I get seems to be lacking, I've been told this can help. Secondly, if it's any good, which should I order? Seems to be the usual basic versions to the hyper marketed ones and everything in between.

A better bedtime routine is much healthier. ;)

Among other things from TPW I got some 'carb extreme' through the post today (Waxy Maize Starch, Maltodextrin, Dextrose and Electrolytes). It's currently on 75% off and should provide a decent enough stim free pre-workout. Millionaires shortbread flavour whey is foul, incidentally.

Do any of those ingredients elevate your heart rate like caffeine does? I've came off caffeine as it was giving me palpitations. Could do with something to give me a kick some days though.

No they just provide a sustained energy release over the course of a workout. Similarly to you I have cut out all caffeine in my diet including the 4-5 cups of coffee a day I used to drink as I was getting palpitations and restless nights. Feel much better now but miss the added boost during a workout.

My bedroom routine is as good as my partner allows it to be, much like many I suspect. Are you saying ZMA isn't healthy?

Not at all... I'm saying that all things people take to "get better rack time" are not healthy. :) And I don't mean BEDROOM routine - that's for you and a consenting adult. :D

If you're supplementing as a reason to get around a truncated biological process (like sleeping or eating), you're on a hiding to nowhere (like taking more pre-workout or whatever) and eventually it will kick you, normally by hitting a wall in the gym.

I've heard - colloquially - that ZMA is pretty effective, but there isn't much in terms of 'research' as such.

Hah, I didn't mean that sort of bedroom routine. I mean my partner is often up and down all night (stop sniggering at the back :p). I was hoping ZMA would just give me a bit more of a push into the 'slightly deeper being able to ignore her peacefully' sort of state.

Earplugs, tbh. :D And why is she getting up? She should be exhausted, if you take my meaning. *ba-doom tish!I'mhereallweek*

I find ZMA seems to give me a better nights sleep, I sleep terribly but it does seem to allow me to get a little more uninterrupted sleep also 5-HTP is good.

Yeah - this is the general colloquial consensus I've read about ZMA and another similar metabolite (can't remember the name right now).

Alternatives are:

- glass of milk;
- arginine (AAKG might work);
- OAKG (I take this occasionally, even though it is the worst-tasting thing in existence);
- glutamine (less awesome, but similar principle)...
- calcium lactate...

I'm not going to say don't take that stuff because I do. But make sure your bedtime routine is as good as it can be AND THEN supplement. As much as anything else, because ZMA isn't cheap.

What's a good 100% whey protein, I've just got back into the gym after time off but I have a few fatty lumps under the skin which the nurse said can be caused by protein shakes and is common in weightlifters so I want to avoid additives so to speak or maybe someone here knows more about it?

The nurse to put it nicely is talking complete ****.

The nurse was talking out of her backside, basically.

Just the this, it's what most of us use. Can't really go wrong. Apple cinnamon swirl or cherry bakewell are the best flavours in my opinion. Use TS6642 when signing up for an extra bag of protein free.

Whey is whey basically, unless you buy branded stuff where they fill it with extra unnecessary ingredients

I think what the nurse was hinting at is that weightlifting and good diet generates lumps otherwise known as MUSCLES.

And why 100%? Sounds like it's going to be expensive...

Always nice to find some comedy gold :D fatty lumps caused by weightlifting?! :D Love it!

I've been supplementing with ovaltine :D just whilst I had a little break from caffeine :) pretty tasty but massive sugar content! :eek:
