Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight'

Looking at the clean cut on the tree this is presumably the son of a local farmer who used his dads tractor/cutter for a bit of a laugh that has gone badly wrong, not some kids with an axe or a hand saw - this is also why the police have got him so quickly i would imagine.

Its a weird one becuse it feels like he should be hung drawn and quartered but the law will probably mean a small fine and a slap on the wrist for being a norty boy.

On reddit they are saying he got recently sacked by the NT but just internet rumours. Either way complete idiot and I think should be strung up in it's place

Bit of a laugh? The white paint indicates a pro job, and doing it in the middle of a storm is a bit more thought required than having a laugh.

It won't be the same but can it be replaced? Before anyone shoot me down I am sure it is like asking local builder to render a curved wall "it can't be done"

move another tree? surly faster than growing it from the stump

You could probably move a twenty foot tree depending on access but it will need plenty of attention and still would take decades to mature any where near to the previous one.

I think that it is some woodturner guy wanting a nice sycamore to turn into bowls.

So we now know it's a 16 year old "child". He'll plead not guilty "oh I didn't know which tree I was vandalising" (of course you bloody knew which tree it was). He'll get given a slap on the wrist, a name change and legal protection / security for the rest of his life, all from the public purse.

It's a pity we don't have US style tree law, the fines can run into the millions

About the only thing more serious than Tree law in the US is Bird Law.

I remember the story about some well off twits who decided to cut down some trees that were "spoiling their view", IIRC they were fined hundreds of thousands and had to pay to have the trees replaced with ones of the same species and size, as you say it cost them something like a million from memory.

The fun for them really comes when bird law enters the chat, as there can be similar fines (at least in some states) for every nest disturbed, apparently it's enough that there are people whose job it is to basically check trees that are due to be felled/distrubed for nests and it can take several days per tree to do that if there are humming birds in the area.

Won't be easy

If there is will there is a way

Police are stumped and can’t quite work out the root of the problem Leaf it with them
Maybe it's a job for "Special Branch?"

Sad though. Why would you do something so spiteful. He'll be bragging to his kids in a few years time "I cut that down... lol"
