Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight'

scallies gonna scally. it's a tough one because I would love the book thrown at him, but given the police won't even come out and visit criminal damage usually (in my case we knew who did it , the police admitted they knew who did it and they left textbook fingerprints on my car )

to be honest this is the totally predictable other shoe falling of teenagers under 18 knowing they can do almost what they want with no consequences wrt vandalism.

personally I would give him at least 100 hrs community service and do the same for all petty vandalism. short term it may cost some money but long term I think it would pay for itself as it would be a proper deterrent.

I came across a Range Rover which had been stripped of parts and rolled down a car park into a tree one night, not that there was much they could do but the police clearly didn't give a ****, which just encourages these types to think they can get away with it.

The Nortumbria Police arrest for this seems to have kicked the Staffordshire Police into some form of action! They have also made 2 arrests today and the ages of those arrested would fit with the identified Company Directors of the "Private Developer" that Marstons sold the land to.

I suppose this is the owner of the land next door? Pretty obvious it was her. I don't really know what made her think she could get away with this.

This makes me so sad.

A unique, irreplaceable piece of British heritage, destroyed by vandals.

:(

It's unbelievable.

They should make an example of people who do this sort of thing.

Disgusting act.
BUT

I'm sure that can be reattached. Would need scafolding for a number of years. But we had a hybrid tree in our old house where one tree had been added to the trunk of another... Although it wasn't as low as that on the trunk so Physics and all that
Its a tad large to graft back on wrong time of year as well

I know it's "only" a tree but this really makes me mad, for what reason would anyone possibly want to do this ?
To make people annoyed and it's worked.

If we weren't living in an era where 'causing distress' wasn't rewarded by the likes of the press or content creation websites I would probably say it was something stupid like they were dared to do it. Sadly maliciousness now has a value to it and it's easy to do.

He'll get named & shamed eventually. This is the sort of thing that'll follow him around for years and hopefully, to some degree at least, blight his future.
Good. But then, with a mentality like that, he will probably wear that badge of shame with pride.

Personally, I think we should concrete him in place where the tree stood and see if he can last 200 years.

I think whoever did do it will be genuinely surprised at the huge uproar it's caused, and now in the cold light of day, is realising the enormity of what he's done. My guess is some trainee tree surgeon (edit. Or some immature ******-up man child), jilted by his missus who just happened to love that tree.

I believe it's a local that has done it to stop the visitors. The job has been done by a professional or someone very used to using a chainsaw

Indeed. You can see the facecut and not a bad piano hinge on the tree of the cut. Not that I would know these things....

I guess that answers the question do fallen trees make a noise since no one heard a thing.
