System build guide

I'm about to start my first ever build from scratch (its coming within the hour!)..

I have a question, how do would you recommend setting it out when using a new case? Obviously its easier with the case on its side.. so would you put it straight onto a table? I wouldn't want to scratch or damage the table or the shiny new case..

Is it okay to lay it on a towel or something?

Thanks
David

I usually just lay the case on its side with a table cloth over the table. Also put it on table mats before to stop me marking the table.

Case arrived broken, see my thread in the logs forum.. So its going to have to wait although isn't practical!

Thanks for your advice though, had towel ready!!

Just read your other postings in the 'logs' section, and I am really sorry to hear about the broken case.

I know that it is too late now, but if you had phoned OcUK earlier today, and asked to speak to 5UB, or even posted in the OcUK Customer Services area on here, it is possible that they might have been prepared to send one off to you today on an advance replacement basis.

Actually it might still be worth doing just that, as they might still be able to get one to you for Saturday, like I believe they offered over Easter.

I hope you are able to get something sorted out sooner rather than later anyway! :)

Hey thanks for your concern! I managed to sort it by buying a new one via sales thanks to one of the OC staff on the forum (forget name) and the guy on the phone was so helpful even though it was late and was able to keep the DPD guy from leaving by making him a brew so I could get the case today.. The broken one was RMA'ed and collected today also so that will be refunded.

All is well now, case here and i've started!
So already I have questions..

So many screws with this case... I was about to ask which to use for what but i've worked out such abreviations as FDD = floppy disk drive and ODD = optical disk drive.

Expect more questions within the next few hours.. already the size of this job has dawned on me, only one way to learn though!

See, question already, or more so advice..

The fractal has a rear chasis fan.. I figured I should remove it as I have a Kuhler which comes with fan and radiator..

Right? Or should I use the Fractal fan with the Kuhlers radiator?

Cheers

How about sandwiching the radiator between the two fans for push/pull action?

Hi, i've heard this term before but not sure what you mean? Is there a guide anywhere?
Scrap that, the Kuhler fans are 120mm and the spare i've got is 140mm.. But i do have a xilence spare 120mm to do the push pull with!

Glad you got it sorted so you can get on with your build. Have to say great service from OcUK.

Indeed great service!!

Im not sure if I should post questions and ask for tips regarding my build in here or in my log..
But i'll tell you how my minds working right now..

I've installed two 140mm fans in the front of the case and removed the HDD cage so the top one is pushing cool air through to the MB not obstructed by the HDD cage.

I did this as i'm putting my HDDS in the lower cage where the PSU is.
Now my PSU is mounted with the fan drawing cool air from below case.. I've removed the door allowing more airflow between the HDD cages to the PSU section.. Is this efficient?

Cheers!

Good service from OcUK indeed... and DPD! :)

Your questions about fans and cooling are already beyone my (limited) technical knowledge of the products under discussion, but there are plenty of folk on here who are more than happy to advise you.

Actually it might be better to post future questions in a different area of the Forum, (as I see has already been suggested, while I was typing my reply!) where you will probably receive more detailed replies from the specialists there who follow them closely!

Enjoy! :)

Fantastic guide. Gonna be ordering all my bits next Friday (why do banks take so long to cash cheques? :( ), so I'll hopefully be starting it the following few days.

Between this written guide and a video I was linked, I'm pretty confident on going ahead with my first ever build.

Much appreciated ;)
