System Shock 2 to come to GOG

Just had a quick blast with your mod folder installed FrenchTart, the secmod certainly changes a few things, I can't even find the science sector access card! lol

edit: found it, not sure how I opened the cryo chambers though :)

I'll give it a blast for a bit and see what I think, I have played the original before so the changes introduced might be welcome.

I didn't play this game (I was too young at the time)
Always wanted to get it at some point just because of the stupidly positive reviews it got.

Bought it, slapped a few mods on it to make the textures bearable and daym....couple of hours in and I only JUST got off, I didn't even realize what time it was till I looked at my clock and was like....holy hell....

One of the best purchases I have made for awhile....

It's really awesome. Probably the best single-player FPS of all time imo :)

Lol. It took me a while to find those too :p I quite like the fresh challenge of it all :)

edit: uploaded a version without secmod for the new players :)

I hate this game, currently hiding from monkeys! Damn thing is on normal difficulty as well, normal! grrr. :( :p

Are you playing with or without SecMod? I'm getting absolutely hammered by everything in hard mode with SecMod near the start. Really crazy. I've completed the game before tons of times on impossible difficulty (including melee-only). Damn game :p

I gave up on my normal OSA playthrough, ended up crying in a corner of the cargo bay with no psi, broken guns, and no ammo :p

I'd forgotten how unforgiving the game can be. Or how crap the laser pistol is :)

I'm interested to see how the balance changes of the sec mod play out, hopefully no more useless weapons and godlike assault rifles :)

Still, its defo tougher, going to play through on normal difficulty.

I think I'm going to drop my difficulty to normal too. Mostly so I can take it a bit easier and also try out as many new weapons as possible.

Nice to hear it can do that to you hopefully it won't crush my nostalgia when i pick it up.

Thanks Frenchtart, for the mod packs.

This game is awesome - I can see why people rave about it. Turning off the music helps, because it sometimes comes in at the wrong time. There's loads of atmosphere and creepiness with the ambient sounds.

It's not an easy game (even on easy!) so get used to the idea of quicksave. There's quite a good no-spoilers newbies guide here: http://www.shtupmod.net/newbies_guide.html

Why don't they make games like this anymore!

Why bother when apparently Dead Space is the pinnacle of horror/survival games at the moment (which I honestly don't think of THAT highly)... And when FPS is epitomized by the Call of Duty series. Makes me weep. The closest thing we've had to SS2 is Bioshock, which incidentally is made by the same guys who did SS2. And then we've got Deus Ex which is considered a "spiritual successor", and in my opinion the latest in the series kinda lacks the "magic" of the original.

All the decent game developers of yesteryear have been gobbled up by the big boys of the industry! Special mention to Westwood Studios!

As a side note, to spare me going off on a complete tangent... I'm so happy this is coming to GOG. GOG's a brilliant little gem I found recently due to being linked by somebody in this here forum, and I've burned away so much money on it at the moment. It's just great to download an old game which works from the go--without having the bother of getting it to work yourself, or opening DOSBox and typing away to get it to work... it's just 'nice'. And yeah, System Shock 2 is literally one of the best games I've ever played... I'm so glad a new generation of people get to try it out and experience it's awesomness! :D

I'd really like a 'stay dead' mod. Something that stops the constant respawn of monsters. I clear a room out then I'll be going through my inventory sorting stuff out and the damn things are back! Don't get me wrong it adds to the 'arrgh wtf!' of the game but, now and again, I'd like to be able to clear them out so I can progress and not have to rely on my wrench all the time as I've run out of ammo!

So if you know of such a mod let me know!

The above should sort you out. It isn't compatible with ADaOB or SecMod and the like though. Possibly not a problem if you're not playing with those mods. It should be fine with SHTUP, Rebirth, etc (i.e. mods that change the graphics but not the gameplay).

Yeah, that's a really good guide for new players. I wish it had been around when I first played through the game. Would have saved so many tears of frustration :p
