ugh. people like you are the worst kind of music fan. i wear River Island clothes, and Topman, and Fenchurch, and Bench....please tell me what kind of music i'm allowed to be into. i was rather looking forward to listening to this new Tool album...i
do hope you approve.
i have also been known to go to a...dare i say it....night club
Allow me to justify my comment for you people who are going to slate me for what I said.
Firstly, I am not a pretentious fan. I don't listen to tool in dark rooms, with incense, listening to every hidden meaning, trying to find out what Mr MJK thinks of the world.
To be perfectly honest, I think tool make their songs so intertwined and complex for just that very reason. I believe it is a bit of a tongue in cheek joke at the fans that
do sit their and study the songs. I'm not saying that they wouldn't construct their music in the same way if the fans didn't do that, but, I can see them now in the studio discussing how they can tease the fans more.
However, I do like tool. 'Why?' I hear you ask (that seems to be the main theme of this thread, people asking why tool are so popular, and the fans giving vague answers (some people excluded))
For me, tool is clever music. Yeah it's got fibonacci drumming, if you play it in a certain sequence it fits better, and some songs are the same played backwards and forwards. I couldn't care less about all that, it's not what's clever about it for me. I like the fact that I don't get bored whilst listening. I enjoy that it can hold my attention and grip me. Whether it's in full sequence or just songs on their own, I never fail to be blown away.
Secondly, I don't find MJK to be a technically amazing vocalist. I sometimes find his voice whiney. However, that doesn't stop me finding him one of the most incredibly tallented vocalists ever. The ammount of raw emotion that is apparent through his use of screaming, whispering, singing and growling is superb.
Thirdly, and for me, this is probably my main reason for liking them. They're
different. Yes, there are bands which do the same length songs, use fibonacci sequences, and do weird and wonderful things with their music (Floyd and Alice in wonderland, for example) but, and again this is my opinion, there is nobody who do is quite like tool.
On first listen, their music seems messy. It appears to be disorganised, poorly sung(due to MJK's vocal volume, usually) and as a whole it seems thrown together with no real direction. Then, if you really listen to it, bits start to fall in to place. You get to hear something which can't be replicated.
This happened to me which I first heard Vicarious. I thought, 'hmm, this doesn't seem as good as their previous efforts' but then I listened to the song a few more times and read the lyrics. Then, I listened to it a bit more and my view on it changed. I think it's my favourite tool song to date. It's musically outstanding (drumming, as ever, is incredible) and lyrically brilliant. I think it's so appropriate to life at the moment, and also very true. Seriously, If you haven't found the lyrics for the song yet, look them up, they're very good.
So, there you have it. 3 plain reasons why for me tool are my favourite band. No pretentious comments about the music being 'deep' and all that jazz.
Moving on.
Sic, i'm terribly sorry if you thought that I was generalising about people who shop in RI. I work there, so a lot of my clothes come from there too.
My point was that when Radio 1 (i'm hoping it was the Zane Lowe show, if not then it's worse than I first imagined) get their teeth into something, so does the rest of the world. This in turn leads to either one of two things. The band rides their current burst of fame and thrives on it (arctic monkeys, for example) wheras others fall under the pressure. tool have been going for years with a dedicated fanbase, so I doubt they would be affected by this. I hope the wouldn't anyway. Them getting more fans is a good thing.
I would, however, dislike this band and their music been listened to by the youth culture of today. After coming out of the club at 2:30, drunk off their faces, screaming random tool lyrics. For me, it would completly ruin their whole appeal. They would be reduced to the level of Kaiser cheifs, Franz, Monkeys etc. I'm not saying that type of music isn't very good, but all music has its place, and I feel that radio1 isn't the place for this band.
They're incredibly popular, and i'm not saying that only a certain niche of society can listen to them, but the niche of society which radio1 listeners/River Island (in majority, not all) appeals to would degrade the music this band produces. This is talking from experience. The RI radio has to be paint-by-numbers indie, or pop. Anything remotly heavy, challenging or involving cannot be played there. It's kinda like the rules, man.
There's a lot more I could write on this but I wont as i have a feeling you'll just cry more anyway.
I'm sorry if I offended you, or anyone else for that matter.
