T-Mobile HSPDA - 380KBPS?

Who? I've spoken with Customer services 6 times. I've even been put through to level 2 tech support. All claim there is no issue.

They have removed web and walk plus and my speeds have stayed at 1.7Mbps. Whether they will from next month is another question.

I'm now arguing with them about the fact I never asked for this to applied and so should be charged for it.

The twitter guys have stopped talking to me now that i have told them that it was never expressed that i wanted W&W+, just that I wanted my speed issues fixed.

My favourite bit though it them telling me I have a FUP and referring me to the terms and condition, when I clearly state that there is no FUP on contracts bought before 30th Sept 2011 at over £25pm for 24 months.

EDIT:

Charges removed. I guess they had to speak to a manager.

You need to get through to Tier 2/3 network support and ideally spell it out in simple language. I mean REALLY simple.

1) My phone will not activate the HSDPA Protocol - I want this fixed and the handset is not at fault.
2) My other phone does
3) The reason for this is because if you buy a contract direct from T-M you get a product put on your account which allows HSDPA - if you buy from a 3rd party the product restricts to 380Kb/s (effectively disables HSDPA startup). This is your fault and you CAN fix it.
4) Fix it by applying the right product to my account you cheating monkeys.

If you need to give them background it might be worth knowing that the way networks work is that there's a central big ol DB that has a set of permissions in it for each account. When different products get put on the account they change the permissions, sorta like a big active directory. When you connect to the network, try to call someone etc... different elements of the whole network can check if you're allowed to do things - one of these checks in T-M's network appears to be 3G-to-HSDPA startup which is being blocked.

Thanks for the info. It is sorted for the time being. I'm getting 1.7-1.8Mbps on HSDPA. I guess next month will be the test.

Thanks for the help.

Of course we all know that t-mobile limits HSDPA to 1.8Mbps for W&W+ customers. Why do T-mobile see fit to restrict speeds then try to charge £5-£10 a month to get the same speeds available on other networks at no extra charge?

Glad you got it sorted.

Anyone know the answer to this one then....

At work i very rarely manage to get a HSDPA signal, its usually just sat at 3G, however i do have a work phone which is on the orange network which is pretty much constantly on HSDPA.

I thought that TMobile shared with Orange...if thats the case should i also be seeing H speeds on my TMobile phone when sat side by side?

That isn't how the sharing agreement works.

It will switch to an Orange signal if you can't get a T-Mobile signal, you can't choose.

All interesting reading.....and so I downloaded Speedtest and found my T-Mobile 'H' connection is only getting me 380kbps :( Contract is direct from T-Mobile and I was always under the impression I was getting best speeds, but now I realise I am not - boooo to that !
Renewal time due in a couple of months, and - by the looks of things - can likely get proper HSPDA speeds elsewhere......always happy with T-Mobile's data limits (more or less unlimited for me, I think nominal 3GB IIRC) - perhaps I need to see what my actual typical use is, as quite possibly I can benefit from faster connections offered elsewhere, but had always been a little worried by data caps.

Slightly off topic, any good recommendations for an app (Android) to monitor how much data is actually used (non-wifi) per week/month ?

Are you sure Robbo? I can choose to switch to 'Orange T-Mobile' just by manually selecting it (I am on Orange) from the list of available networks. This definately works because my provider changes to 'Orange T-Mobile' and I lose HSDPA.

zootfloot - the network share is not HSDPA enabled yet, they say it is 'coming soon' but for now even if you browse on to the Orange network it won't help :(

Well even if you are able to switch to it, I don't think the high speed stuff is working. You may be able to switch on some phones then, I'm not sure.

If you are on a 500mb FUP it does say 3G in the terms, so no HSDPA for you i'm afraid.

I use Net counter to monitor both wifi and 3g (HSDPA) connections. It's free in the marketplace.

Not 500MB.....back when I upgraded, they were offering standard 3GB to Android phones :) But not sure of speeds....thing is, I definitely get quicker when 'H' is on, as opposed to '3G' (circa. 250kbps) or 'G' - just not that much !

Coolio, will check that out, thanks :)

I work for orange. 2G is shared. 3G/HSDPA is not - but is in trial. It will prioritise your own network until it can not see this network and ONLY THEN will it try to switch.

If you switch manually you are a) upsetting me because the phone knows best b) going to see problems switching back - it will not switch back "cleanly" and you may need to restart your phone. Switching manually when all you can achieve is GPRS is a bit of a moronic move anyway, unless your phone is showing issues I recommend to everyone you leave it alone.

3G sharing is taking longer to fix because the networks use extremely different setups (and releases) and are run by different companies - NSN on one side, Ericsson on the other.

3G & HSDPA are both the same thing, UTMS. Unless they define 3G as a level of service (first release UMTS upto 384kbps) separately from HSDPA (a protocol extension of the former) then I'm going to say you're probably wrong.

@Myshra, yes both are UTMS but standard 3G is only around 380kps where as HSDPA is enhanced and can offer 14Mbps downstream.

As you work for orange, can you state whether orange restrict data speeds like T-Mobile do?

T mobile restrict to basic 3G speeds, then 1.8Mbps, then you can pay extra for some kind of web and walk max, which most people are getting over 4Mbps on.

Thanks for quoting my own definition back at me I guess but my point is that unless they define them differently in the contract they are technically the same thing so it holds no weight.

With regard to definitions - first off - AFAIK T-M only do this 3rd party/1st party/different level stuff but all the other networks to my knowledge (including orange) have different speeds at different sites due to backhaul - some sites have higher bandwidth links than others so the max "speed" for HSDPA is changed accordingly. At work I'm on a 7.2 link, at home it's a 3.6 for example.
