Tabletop Warhammer?

well thanks a lot ocuk, i read this thread from the start and today i bought the tau codex lol ...

You did better than I managed when I went into a GW store with an interest for the first time in a decade...I ended up with the codex and £100+ worth of models :)

Talking models, I'm hoping to get some undecorated tomorrow - it's taken me ages to get the last of the tau I've been preparing ready, and then I had to sort out some storage in the garage :)

When i have some funds ill be grabbing a xv8 suit for command, a squad of fire warriors and some kroot. Then moving up to 750pts asap. As you may have noticed my partner in crime has gone bloodangels. From a look around tonight most tau v blood angel reports do not end well for the tau. Lots of running and gunning methinks. :D

devilfish are definitely your friend, run and gun is always the best option

Tau are, unfortunately quite out of date when it comes to the codex from what I can tell :( (I think it's two editions of the main rules out of date), but if you get the right line up you can biff those marines:p

It's worth noting that Gun Drones are better in CC than normal tau, and are quite handy at times as marine transport killers (Pulse weapons are STR5 so gun drones can bounce around the board* and have a chance of killing/disabling things with an AR of up to 10).

My normal force tends to have a commander in Crisis suit and at least two other suits either as elites or body guards - if you're a little careful the suits (and drones) can be a real problem for other players, especially those that can't move and fire , as you can move them out from cover in the movement phase, fire, and use their assault move to jump back behind cover :D (as long as it's not dangerous terrain).
Gun drones are awesome for things like units that have to go after the nearest enemy..especially if that enemy can't fire at them:p (although with the new line of sight rules maybe not so - I had about 200-300 points of Khorne chasing 60 points of Drones for 3 or 4 turns a while back).

For vehicles Multi Trackers (they work slightly differently to the version on suits), Flechette launchers (great for hurting imperial guard/orcs that try to assault), and disruption pods are your friends (the DP's have saved my hammerheads a number of times).

*It's worth dropping them off piranha's etc early a lot of the time, to spread fire, they have a 1 in 3 chance of hitting, but reroll for twin linked, then you only need a 5 to glance. A tank hunter piranha can make good use of that as while the marine is worrying about the fusion blaster up front, a pair of gun drones up the rear can spoil his day with a little luck:p

Quite :D

Snip for the greater good

I hadn't really considered gun drones, but i certainly shall now. I've read that if your crisis suits get caught up and are definitely about to be assaulted, then they should jump in first.

How many points are you rocking at the moment wolfie? These tactics Ive read here and elsewhere are great. The problem seems when it comes to rolling on the board is you make a mass of hits with firewarriors/crisis teams/stealth etc. but the blood angels 'feel no pain' makes your hits/kills basically less effective etc. Either way its all fun :D I'm pretty keen to get started.

edit: I was also thinking of doing a squad rocking pulse carbines instead of rifles to gain pin, any thoughts?

Just one more thing for the 40k-heads here (/columbo). Are there any forum recommendations (such as dakkadakka, heresy) One with friendly people etc. If this question is breaking rules here btw ignore and feel free to slap my wrist :p

I'm at about 1500 or so points of usable stuff* (probably closer to 2000 if I count the older hammerhead/piranha's etc that I want to spray again), and about another 1000 points or so that are hopefully getting under coated today.

Carbines vs rifles is a hard one, I tend to take both as whilst pinning is handy some armies can flat out ignore it if they have certain characters, others have a great chance of ignoring it on a reasonable roll, which means it's sometimes better to have the extra range from the rifles (an extra couple of rounds of shooting potentially), but it really does depend on what you're facing as to which is best.
I'll tend to take Rifles in a "static" squad and carbines in an assault squad if I do separate them.

One minor assembly tip, for drones it's well worth getting 2mm neodymium magnets, put one in the bottom of the drone, and one on the stand (make sure you match them all up or you'll have drones that only work on some stands, or potentially stands that don't work with any drones!:p).
It solves 2 problems.
1: The stands breaking off if you knock the drones over, instead they just cleanly separate.
2: It makes it much easier to transport and store the drones (again without them breaking in transit), as with some of the more common commerically available cases (KR Multicase), you can get 3-4 based drones into a transport slot, then fit the bases wherever you have space.

I've actually magnetised most of my suits and vehicles as well, but it can be fiddly and time consuming to do them (and you risk weapons dropping off the suits in combat if the magnets aren't quite right), but does mean you can keep WYSIWYG with things like seeker missiles quite nicely :)

vincent1989, I could have sworn that the Tau codex was late third edition:)
I guess it must have been early 4th as it seems old:p

*From memory it's
1 x hammerhead
1x skyray/hammerhead
1x devilfish
30 FW's
28 Kroot
4x normal crisis suits
1x commander
3x stealth suits
sniper team
A shed load of drones.

Thanks for that, vincent. :)

Even knowing that, still having trouble. :p

Tempted to start up a new IG force, but I really want to work on my painting ability and I think using SM for that might be a better idea as the models are larger and more forgiving. The only half-decent painting I ever did was on my Iron Warriors, which were pretty easy: drybrush Boltgun Metal, add some bronze, wash. :p

I've still got a tonne of 40k/LotR stuff in the loft, with a load of it still unpainted. I'd love to get back into it someday, maybe going through and painting the old stuff could re-invigorate my interest.

some of my old stuff was shockingly bad compared to my current stuff and even my current stuff isn't wonderful, try something like tyranids where you can apply a skin tone, a carapace tone, a wash and then pick out the details, it's how i paint mine;

They might not be as good as some of the models you see in the GW books or on the front of the boxes but these are still very good mate.

I just don't have enough patience and I have a very VERY shaky hand (So shaky I can barely play on the Wii due to not being able to keep the cursor on the screen) so I can get them to a tabletop standard but sadly no further.

Those look awesome. :)

I did once consider running a Tyranid army, but I have to say that big guns and tanks tend to capture my imagination much, much more. I started working towards an IG tank company when the unofficial list was printed in Chapter Approved but it never got finished and I sold off the tanks. :(

Gonna give it some more thought, then see make use of Maelstrom's price promise so that I can use the moneyback balance that's been sat on my account for years. Need to get brushes, paints etc., too. :/
