Tabletop Warhammer?

It was a fun game, but I've come away from it with a valuable lesson: Wyches vs. Grotesques is just a bad idea. Wyches vs. Grotesques and Urien is madness. My poor Succubus... :(

Aye, I definitely underestimated that unit. I knew they would slow me down, but I didn't think they'd stop the Incubi like that. Should have held back and shot at them with the Kabalite Warriors. :p

Sadly, it is snowing a little out and is cold, so I can't go and prime the rest of my Marines. It's times like this I wish my garage hadn't been converted to another bedroom. :(

Shami any chance you can find the warhammer fantasy codexs like you did the 40k and drop them in the dropbox?

I'm going to be unavailable completely this week but I will be free Sat or Sun.

I think I have some of the WFB books lying around. I'll see if any are current. :)

I've given up on doing a half-white colour scheme for my Space Marines. None of the white tests I've done have turned out as well as I hoped they would, so I think I'm just going to go with the backup option of Crimson Fists. I've done one test model using Vallejo Imperial Blue but it seems a little too dark. Does anyone know if Kantor Blue closer to the old Midnight Blue or Regal Blue?

Hmm, so probably about the same as Imperial Blue. The Royal Blue from the Model Colour range does appear slightly lighter than the Imperial Blue, although they're the closest match for one another from the two respective ranges, so it might be better to go with that and then do a wash over the top of it, as at the moment the one that I've painted up with this scheme looks black at 12" away under the lights in my room, although it does look more blue in daylight.

Thanks. :)

JHeaton's Dark Eldar vs Clartymarty's Dark Eldar – 1500pts

The mission was Annihilation with a spearhead deployment. JHeaton won the role and decided to go first, picking the top left quarter as his deployment zone. He started everything except the Razorwing, the vehicles lined up around the forest ready to charge forwards while the Hellions deployed by the Webway gate. Clarty deployed all his units around the ruins and Imperial outpost. His Incubi in Venom were deepstriking. His Mandrakes infiltrated near the woods on the left flank.

JHeaton rolled a 2 for his combat drugs, giving the his Wyches and Hellions +1 weapon skill. Clarty rolled a 3 getting +1 strength for his Wyches and Reavers.

Deployment:

Turn 1:

The 2 Warrior Raiders advanced alongside the ruins and opened fire on the Warrior squad, killing four of their brethren. The Incubi and Wrack Raiders moved behind the hill to the north, using the available cover. The Wyches advanced in their Raider at full speed towards the Grotesques. The Ravager advanced behind it and targeted the opposition Ravager, it's 3 Dark Lances easily penetrating the light armour and blowing the vehicle sky high. The Hellions moved around the forest flanking the enemy.

The 2 Wych Raider's advanced to the South of the ruins with a Reaver squad in support. One of the Wych Raiders opened fire on the Ravager but failed to hit. The Warrior armed with the Dark Lance shot at the Raider in front of him but he was distracted by a chipped nail and missed his target.

Turn 2:

The Razorwing joined the battle, coming on behind the line of Raiders. The Ravager opened fire on one of the Wyche's Raiders, immobilizing it and destroying the Dark Lance while the Wyche's Raider fired at it's opposite number destroying it completely. 4 Wyches died in the explosion and the rest of the unit turned and fled off the table! The Wyches charged through the ruins, their nimble footwork easily finding good footing amongst the rubble. The Succubi killed one Grotesque with the Agoniser but the rest of the squad failed to penetrate the thick skin of the Grotesques. Urien and the grotesques slew 3 in return but the Wyches held their ground. The two Warrior squads and their Raiders opened fire on the Talos, their poisoned weaponry easily killing the beast. The Incubi and Wracks advanced over the hill in their Raiders, disembarking and charging the two Warrior squads. The Incubi killed all the Warriors with their Glaives while the Wracks killed three, losing one in return. The Warriors turned and ran, easily outpacing the Wracks.

The fleeing Warrior's recovered and advanced towards the Wracks. The two Reaver squads moved towards the Wracks, one squad firing their guns killing a few while the other squad charged the survivors. The bladed bikes killed 3, losing one in return, the Wracks turned and ran but were easily caught and slaughtered by the jetbikes! The Wyches disembarked from their immobilized Raider and charged the Hellions, they killed five and lost three in return (feel no pain really saved the Hellions) The Hellions passed their morale test and stayed in combat. The Jheaton's Wyches in the centre failed to wound the Grotesques and the Succubi missed with her Agonizer. Urien Rakarth wounded the Succubi with his Ichor Gauntlet and we all looked on with baited breath (if the 4+ save was failed then the leader would be instantly killed!) Jheaton rolled a 2 and the lethal warrior died gruesomely! The Wyches turned tail and fled from the combat, easily outpacing the lumbering Grotesques.

Turn 3:

The Razorwing fired it's Monoscythe missiles at the Reaver squad below the ruins, despite the cover save the jetbikes were all killed in the explosions. The tide turned in the Heliion.Wych combat, the Hellions killing two without reply. The Wyches failed their leadership check and for the second time in the battle, the survivors fled off the battlefield! Four Raider's shot at the second Reaver squad and annihilated the bikers. The Wyches recovered and charged the Grotesques again, failed to kill any, lost four more and turned and ran again :D

The Incubi chose this point to deep strike in their Venom and immediately opened fire on their opposite number. A combination of Feel no Pain and the ancient Incubi armour meant none fell though. The Warriors moved away from the Raiders while the Grotesques took up position in the ruins.

Turn 4:

The Ravager began the turn by finishing off the immobilized Raider at close range. The Incubi charged the Grotesques and killed both with their wicked Glaives. Urien held his ground though but failed to kill any in return.

The Incubi moved out of the wreckage of the Venom and moved towards the enemy. They charged the nearest Raider but failed to penetrate the armour. Urien killed two Incubi and took a wound in return, both sides were fearless though and held their ground.

Turn 5:

Five Vehicles opened fire on the exposed Incubi (a total of 5 Dark Lances, 3 Disintegrators and Two Monoscythe Missiles) Unsurprisingly they disappeared, not even body parts remained. Urien regenerated his lost wound and killed another Incubi without reply. The two Wyches kept running but were a long way from the table edge.

At this point...only Urien Rakarth was left alive of Clarty's army. He failed to penetrate the Incubi armour and The Incubi failed to wound Urien (He has an ability which lets him ignore D3 wounds every combat, Clarty kept rolling threes!)

Turn 6:

Urien and the Incubi failed to wound each other yet again (One side being able to ignore wounds and the other having a 3+ Feel No Pain save meant not much was happening!)

And yet again Urien survived. At this point the game ended ( not sure we could have taken another turn of the combat that wouldn't end) Urien Rakarth was the only survivor on Clarty's side.

Final Score:

JHeaton - 14
Clartymarty - 4

Final thoughts:

A bloody battle as you would expect (Dark Eldar having lethal weapons but generally being pretty blasé about armour!) Really the first turn for each player decided this. JHeaton managed to destroy Clarty's main Anti Vehicle threat in the first turn and then Clarty missed 2 Dark Lance shots on his first turn that could have evened things up. From that point on Jheaton had Vehicular control and was able to pick things off almost at will. Clarty was exceptionally unlucky to have both his Wych squads run from the battlefield (one without even getting to fight!) but had a midgame recover with a couple of good combats going in his favour (JHeaton and myself were both surprised by how effective Urien and the Grotesques were) Ultimately the damage had been done, anything that did win a combat was promptly cut down by the large amount of Vehicles waiting.

Good game though, I think both have learnt about their armies and good for JHeaton to recover from his first game defeat with a win. Both are new to Dark Eldar and they're a notoriously difficult army to play with. Their glass cannon nature means you tend to either give out a whipping or take one, no in-between for the dark kin.

5th edition is generally pretty mech heavy. You need a good amount of anti vehicle firepower.

The way I look at it, anti armour weapons can still kill troops, anti infantry guns/troops can't kill tanks though. (Well there are a few that can do both to some degree)

And decent rolling. :o
