I failed to take a picture before we began (John you took one didn't you?) but we lined up in a ruined city, husks of tanks showing that the grounds had seen blood before. THe game drawn was a standard annihilation game, with the player destroying the most units claiming victory (The roar of the Khorne Bezerkers could be heard for miles as the dice were rolled)

Now neither of us had played for around a decade so not only were we rusty but this was a new edition for us. First turn alone took us about 30 mins! Eventually we started to get the hang of both the rules and Vassal and things moved along much more swiftly.

I was to engrossed with learning the rules to properly record a play by play but eventually the Sons of Russ were left victorious, managing to destroy two dreadnauts, a CSM squad, a unit of Bezerkers and a Chaos Lord with his terminator retinue!

There was a bogey prize for the most useless unit though. 9 Grey Hunters and a Wolf Guard landed not 12 feet from the enemy by drop pod. They then proceeded to not kill a single one with their shooting (2 melta guns and 8 bolters!) in the turns following they then charged in and continued their abysmal record. The Wolf Guard leader with a power fist in 3 turns managed not to hit out of nine attacks! He has now been demoted to the Blood Claws.

Here's a shot of the final turn:

Lastly a review of VASSAL - It's brilliant. I don't know if it has every unit (it has everything we needed) but the engine works brilliantly, creating an army and map is probably the least simple part but the game itself works brilliantly. Quick features let you quickly calculate most aspects of the game. Can't wait to try it with more people.

Was great rediscovering the game with you John, I'm sure we made plenty of mistakes but it's about the fun :)

I agree with Shamikebab, vassal worked great tonight. Took us a while to get use to the rules and remember what we where doing (tbh shami did most the looking up, i was useless).

His battle report should be a good read and display the importance of going first :P

Around turn 3, notice the missing dreadnought.

Cheers Dan, was good to have a game with you too :) next time I will win, and the sons of russ will join the glorious chaos!

I've added some helpful bookmarks to the pdf in Dropbox. Should make things easier!

I think next game we start with an empty battlefield and do the terrain together, probably be better!

Finished my first Tetra tonight so will get a pic up tomorrow. I need to stop doing Forge world and actually paint some Fire Warriors!

Yes you need to step away from your resin habit and get them done lol, just be glad then don't make FW fire warriors lol
