managed to get 3466 to run using 16-16-16-32 timings in the vortez review. noticed this gave me a bandwidth in memtest of 18567MB/s vs 18995MB/s I was getting with 3386 using 14-14-14-34.
*edit* apparently this is obvious as the cas14 at 3386 has lower latency than the 3466 @ cas16. gonna push to get this for cas12 timings.
3400mhz 14-14-14-34 @1.48v now (using the 3600mhz CAS 16 sticks). seems that SoC power scales with the CPU frequency as well as the memory speed but the amount of power you can throw at it is limited. I can get 3426mhz on the the ram, but I have to drop my best CPU frequency from 3926mhz (1.425v) to under 3.7mhz or the SoC volts needed go too high. I also feel that the SoC is incredibly sensitive to temperature. too many volts can cause instability at lower mem speeds if the chip hits 75*c
the faster ram feels smoother in games, less or lower FPS drops so seems to make up for a lower clock frequency.
3426mhz on the ram and 3879 on the CPU gives a framerate value in 3dmark of 51.76-46.53
3366 ram 3888 CPU gives 51.17-45.95
3400 ram with 3900 CPU gives 51.72-46.52
either way the 3600 sticks seem overkill for current ryzen 7s so I hope ryzen2 improves on the IMC and proves this was a good call for a good few years. they look awesome and feel incredibly high quality in hand. the dimples actually seem to do a decent job of dissipating heat as its the only area that is warm.
5 stars!
