Tearing down statues

Oh look, here come the morons who can’t tell the difference between a monument which sole purpose is to honour someone and things people utilise.

After all, the hospitals Jimmy Saville built all got knocked down didn’t they, as did the motorways Hitler built…. oh wait no, just the bit commemorating them as hero’s got taken off…

Were you upset Jimmy Savilles awards and plaques were taken down? Did you have the strength of you convictions to do anything about it when the statues you worship were taken down, there wasn’t much resistance I can assure you. The Football Lads alliance turned up the next day looking for a scrap and were sent packing.

That's the salient point IMO. The plaques were taken down by choice, by consensus. The statue was torn down by a very small minority seemingly, by the historical debate and voting on the removal of the statue, against the will of the majority.

Too many people seem to conflate their opinion on the removal of the statue with how it was removed. We can argue over whether it should have been removed until the cows come home as that's going to be down to personal opinion. Legally though, I struggle to see how it doesn't just boil down to the question of whether they had the right to remove the statue, which they didn't? - For the avoidance of doubt and pedants, that's 'rights' as inferred by law not as in right and wrong - which coincidently takes us back to conflating the issue.

Also, what's the old internet rule of once you mention Hitler you've lost the argument?

You live in Birmingham, are you from Bristol at all? Doesn’t sound like you are aware of the facts or the history. Bristol, particularly the BS1, BS8 and BS5 areas which connect to the centre overwhelmingly wanted the statue down. The council along with the Merchant Ventures intentionally misled and obstructed the public for over 10 years to keep it up, and have since apologised for doing so.

How do people in here feel about Colston's name being removed from numerous institutions/buildings in Bristol prior (let alone since) to the statue toppling? Or were you not aware?

All for that as it is unnecessarily contentious. My daughter's school will be renamed next year. I can't imagine many people here were supportive of the statue, but that these people had no right to take it upon themselves to remove it, especially not in the manner they did.

Are these councils and universities who are supporting the removal of links to those some believe to have done "bad things" also going to give up public works and buildings many suddenly in their bad books philanthropically financed? Or just those they don't earn money on the back of? Students will of course return any bursary grants originating from these generous men, and finance themselves? No, I thought not....

Ive worked to advance the cause and donated money to the organisation which has had success in doing so.

You up for knocking down Savilles hospital wings or so you just want a plaque up celebrating him?

Source please

It has been widely reported that petitions for the removal only gained ~10k signatures. I can accept not everyone who wanted the statue removed would sign it but in a city of 500k, that's only 2%. Blame people not signing it, blame apathy, blame whatever you want but that's a lot of blame you'd have to get anywhere close to majority.

It's not true.

As usual non-Bristolians commenting on something they know nothing about.

Sorry do numbers and laws work differently in Bristol to the rest of the county?

So what you're saying is the because BS1, 5 and 8 overwhelmingly wanted it removed it should irrespective of what the other 30-40 postal code area of Bristol want?

Again though, I'm not arguing it should or shouldn't have been removed. I'm only commenting on how it was removed. People can do the right thing but still have broken the law.

The removal of peoples name, including statues, I can get behind. We should remember our history, learn from it, but we shouldn't honour such people. However these should happen because people decide to, not because of some angry mob rule.

If your too dumb to know history dosent represent current society and you feel threatened or offended by it, I genuinely feel sorry for you! Your minds must be so weak and fragile, getting through the day must be hard work.
This has to be the most unaware post so far. It is you lot that are crying over this. It is you lot that need to get a grip. Your minds must be so weak and fragile, getting through the day must be really hard work.

No but it was built to use slaves to fight each other to the death. Isn't that even worse?
You lot really need to get a grip.
