Tearing down statues

Why would a gutter press rag do a story around what a couple of middle-aged men are arguing about on one of many forums?
when you see some of guff that makes it to the national press would you really be surprised to see a headline trying to besmirch the name of one of if not the largest pc retailers in the UK?
I mean there are worse comments on multiple daily mail articles every single day.
that's not even in question and i'm not suggesting these forums are at reddit or 4chan levels of toxicity but it doesn't negate my point above.

Yes, I would really be surprised considering it’s not happened yet in around 20 years? From what I understand, the forum used to be far worse years ago as well in terms of things like racism with even the owner at the time getting involved?

I think it's rather more reasonable than the Guardian is making it out to be. A jury deliberately returning the wrong verdict because they disagree with a law (or, as in this case, they disagree with a law being applied to everyone) doesn't set a legal precedent but it does set a precedent.

I'm more tickled that there's actually a parliamentary Common Sense Group. I bet he doesn't mention that job title to his Grindr dates.

no, there's very little funny about most of the posters from both 'sides' of this pointless argument - some of the posts and some of the posters are an utter embarrassment (again from both sides) how this round and round thread is still going and indeed these people are still being allowed to post is beyond belief. i imagine whoever actually owns overclockers now would have a **** fit if they knew about some of the tripe that is posted on these forums.

i genuinely love these forums, they are my go to for all sorts of info and a laugh from time to time but eventually there's going to be some bad press from some of the crap that's posted on here and that'll be the end of them or at least the end of the non tech side of things. i'm actually surprised it's never made it to the front page of the daily mail/sun/any other sensationalist gutter press rag.

You aren’t wrong, it won’t be long until an expose about incels or right wing extremists mention OcUK as one of the breeding ground gateway for hatred, or a member here will commit some kind of violence and their posting history on here will show their descent from here to Kombat18 or something.

This forum is well moderated in general with a fair reporting system for posts containing hate. Some people would like it to go further no doubt but allowing freedom of expression to go alongside contention and disagreement is not easy.

I disagree with many of your views but I do not want you not to be able to make them in open forum.

Wow

For someone who spends a lot of time calling people here cowards and seemingly gloating on violence over the Colston incident, for example, you obviously fear someone here throwing perhaps a tantrum, or at worst a gaming chair.

The UK's best selling newspaper has articles and comments far more divisive and inflammatory than anything permitted here, get a balance!

You're basically peeved you can't bully boy and cow those with differing views to your own.

I suspect the vast majority of the public are against statues and historical/cultural monuments and buildings being torn down because they were constructed by regimes that don’t meet the moral standards of today.

I’m sure several hundred years from now the future will view the capitalist regime we live under as barbaric and a form of mass oppression and slavery by an elite minority!

I’m still surprised the jury found them not guilty given the obvious evidence of criminal damage. I still think the jury system is fairer than leaving it up to judges alone to reach verdicts though

It's a small minority and that's all it takes to be destructive force if the majority is passive.

Germany in 1930's should be a lesson here.

so what will be the basis of the appeal - no new evidence .... otherwise judge will presumably be implicated if he failed to correctly instruct jurors, or control defence discourse
[every time I click a guardian article I smile at their self-opinion
Just the passion and determination to bring readers quality, truth-seeking reporting on the world, its people and power. This makes us different ]

I cant make out what you are trying to say in your post. Either you have drunk too much or me. But what does this mean? Is it some sort or conspiracy? Is it code words?
Poitier was a collussus (what happened to that) in the BLM organisation, dwarfing statue debacle, bbc seems to decide operah is some kind of role model, moral citizen, for uk audience, to justify broadcasting her remorse (Megate et al) ... or, BBC were being ironic.

Smal extremelyl loud minority of weirdos teardown meaningless statues that 99.9% of people don't even know who or what they are, and even if told still have the rationale to understand it's a statue possibly 200 years old.... Irellivant for anything but leaving us debating points on the horrendous way people were treated 100s of years ago.

It's a common act when trying to do something revolutionary. Destroy the past. Kinda associate with Isis though more then normal western folk.

You’re going to have a conniption fit if you don’t calm. I suggest you step away from the keyboard and have a nice cup of tea.

Bullying racists and homophobes is a just and worthwhile endeavour. My concern isn’t the back and forth I get into on here, the forum is largely well moderated with a few blind spots, I’m concerned there’s going to be an Elliot Rogers from here.
