Tennis

Just waiting for the Raducanu haters when Emma goes out in the 2nd round of the AO against Coco Gauff.

Ah yes, the haters who dare to suggest that she isn't quite the world beating talent that she threatened to be when she burst onto the scene. The ones who have suggested that she got quite a serious injury issue which is well documented and very clear for anyone with two eyes to see. The ones who have suggested that she has a bad team around her based on a lot of reports that her dad is a nightmare and she goes through coaches like hot dinners.

But no, they are haters who just really really want to see a young female British tennis player fail because they don't like her

I genuinely don't know quite how you come to these conclusions. People want her to do well. They want her to have a good career. They unsurprisingly talk about her when things aren't going that well because, well, this is a forum and it would be horribly dull if everyone just popped in here to say "you go girl" and "you'll get 'em next time".

People have an interest in tennis and want to discuss it. If someone is having a bad time, they will talk about the fact they are having a bad time. I can't think of anyone who has expressed a desire for her to fail. The haters, perhaps are in your head.

No the ones that don't seem to follow or know anything about tennis. All they seem to see is the BBC articles without understanding the game/tour. Classic is a post above mentioning 'the other girl' in the final. Or the talk injury in the ASB Classic in NZ, which I had posted a video link previously, as it seemed some had only read the BBC headline on her pulling out with understanding the context or how it happened.

Nothing between these two other than Gouff’s been more clinical with her break points. Didn’t really expect Raducanu to win but encouraging to see her play better again.

Playing better. No-one expects her to beat Gauff, the match has been tighter than the scoreline suggests. Her first serves have been poor (before her slight stomach issue or whatever it is), but that is perhaps because she respects Gauffs ability and trying to go for better placement. Gauff is certainly beatable by players with powerful ground strokes, as we saw vs Anisimov last year. Emma who is obviously also lacking some match practice given ankle injury, isn't quite there yet. Not to mention Gaff's superior experience and athleticism.

Would love to see it go to a third set though.

Fair enough. There seem to be a lot of people lately who deem anyone who isn't a sycophant or dares offer criticism as a hater. I apologise.

Fair enough. My post a bit tongue in cheek anyway. I'm not a big Emma fan (or a hater), but good to see her playing when she's moving well.

I should add to my previous post that there is nothing wrong with being casual fan. The season is long, and most won't watch 250/500 level tournaments, or even Premier/Masters events. It was more about just commenting on headlines especially as the BBC does tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to British players.

I always forget that womens tennis is best of 3 sets and it can all be over in an hour. Its so disappointing. All of the best matches I have watched have been in the mens game because you have 5 sets. You can go 2 down and still win. Its hard to have an absolutely epic 3 setter and its not really a comeback considering you can only ever be 1 set down.

Sad to see Nadal end his challenge in the way he did, looked a broken man at the end of his match and there’s surely a limit to how many injuries and comebacks any one person can make.

Some people just don't know when to call it a day. Murray should have retired a few years ago too.

It depends what they want really. If Murray expects to compete for slams, he'd be lying to himself and should retire, but if he's playing for the love of the sport and because he can still compete with and at times beat the best (eg Berretini) then fair play to him.

My fear if I was Murray is that my biscuit body would be a complete mess when I hit my 50s and eking out a few more years will do a lot of damage to him.

Obviously his choice but seems silly to me.

To be fair to Murray he won a title last year and got to the final of another. His losses were generally against top 20 players. He beat Berettini in a thrilling 5 set match the other day marking his first win against a top 20 player in a couple of years. Incidentally that loss knocked Berettini out of the top 20 which is insane given his ability.

But yeah, he's not getting any younger, and the so called next gen are only getting stronger.

EDIT: didn't win a title last year, lost in the final in Sydney.

This is a dig aimed at me. I do follow tennis but only the male side because I find the women’s side boring.

Theres countless players who’ve binked a slam then never really kicked on. You need rivalries to keep the spark alive, to get attached to the players to keep the interest. Eras are always defined by big players.

That’s the annoying thing about men’s tennis right now, it’s going to be absolutely dire when Rafa retires.

Although we might get something from Carlos v Ruud and both look good on all surfaces.

Fine the way it is. There is talk of them changing it to BO3 in week 1 then BO5 week 2. Dire. Keep it the way it is, change can be good but doesn’t need changed.

He’s a mental monster, he’ll be back rocking for the french hopefully. Can see him skipping Wimbledon.

So called next next next next gen :)

Murray away to get knocked out.

Injured* Novak cruise control, Rafa out, Ruud now out too and with the #1 in the world not even playing he should cruise to a 10th title.

Medv probably the only one capable of taking 2 sets but won’t get 3.
