Tennis

The funny thing is, I'm not a fan particularly, and don't like her style of play. I just think people are aren't putting things into perspective and possibly got too carried away by media hype of her previously, and subsequently media put downs. The British media seems to get too excited one way or another.

Its a win win for them. They build her up and she does well and they sell clicks. They build her up and she doesn't live up to the hype and they sell clicks.

Fundamentally she doesn't seem to have the body to compete in elite level senior tennis. Perhaps she will overcome these issues but dear lord does she seem to be made of biscuits. Its not like all the injuries are a specific weak point either. Shes seems to be getting issues all over the place.

The girl she beat in that US final just lost to a 15 year old, 3rd time it’s happened in the WTA!

Womens tennis is so random.

Leylah isn't have a great season so far, but again can't just look at the headline score on this one. Mirra, who she lost to has two clay tournament titles already this season. ITF titles but still. Was also a junior finalist at the Australian Open this year, so is having a blinding season and is on a 12 match win streak. She's currently beating 14th ranked Maia too in her second round. It's on Prime now, she's painting lines.

Bear in mind that Seles and Hingis were both grand slam champions at 16. Not saying Mirra is that sort of prodigy in anyway, but these things can and do happen.

As for Raducanu, she really needs to play more tennis to get some form and consistency. IMO drop down and play some lower ranked tournaments. She's keeping the same kind of tournament schedule that those in the top 10-20 play, yet she's only beaten 2 top 20 players.

Update for those not following the Madrid Open. Mirra Andreeva (now turned 16) also just beat world number 19 Magda Linette.

Sabalenka is her next opponent which will be a huge test for her, but also an opportunity given clay isn't exactly the best surface for big flat hitters like Sabalenka, and Rybakinia.

Seriously, is this girl made of Rice Krispies?

Having seen the latest news it does indeed look like she snaps, crackles and pops.

Either unbelievably bad luck, poor technique or a body that's hit it's limits as soon as the top levels were needed to be maintained. Who knows, could come back, but we've seen young players peak and then fade so many times before.

Raducanu now out of the French and Wimbledon due to hand surgery.

She’ll never have the body for the game.
Thought it would be a simple procedure but it's both wrists and her ankle

I doubt it's poor technique, she's been brought up through the British tennis system but it could certainly be caused by poor coaching and over training since turning pro.

Does put her career in to perspective post US Open though, sounds like she's had these issues for a long time and you only need to look at Del Potro to see what wrist issues can do to a young player that's destined for greatness :(

Edit: Injury's apparently Carpal Boss which is one of the less severe injuries to the wrist, thankfully, but she's expected to miss the entire season now.

I’ll be shocked if she ever comes back to a decent level. She’s minted and set for life though, it’s whether her competitive side let’s her enjoy that while being in this position.

Some great tennis being played at the Rome Masters/WTA1000. First time in 14 years the final won't have either Djokovic (lost to Rune), and Nadal. Speaking of the latter, press conference set for today where it's expected he'll announce he won't be playing in Rolland Garros. Which is huge.

Back to Rome, Iga who retired injured against Rybakinia (who's on fire at the moment), ending her two year domination of the even.

Mirra Andreeva the now 16 year who beat Leylah Fernandez in Madrid has now qualified for the main draw of the Rolland Garros.

Going to be interesting to see how she does in her first grand slam. Definitely looks like an exciting prospect given her results so far this year.

In other news, there's no British women in the French Open draw for the first time in xx amount of years. Poor form from the LTA on that one.

It's fair few more than the 5 in two years that the article mentions. Though from his point of view it's probably better than sitting with his thumb up his bottom given that she won't be back until September or possibly later. Can't imagine anyone who values job security would want to work with her in the future.

In other news, 16 year old Andreeva (who has an Andy Murray obsession) is through to the third round of Rolland Garros. Which is pretty impressive.

I wonder what is going on... Little wonder her form has dipped as I'm sure every coach has their own idea about techniques, strategies and training methods. A classic example of too many cooks i think...
