Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

I'm surprised the last two content updates have been free. The game is fantastic value for money without them, they could have easily been a quid or two each while staying good value. Madness.

Heh. Yeah the endgame kinda accelerates on HM. Magic seems to be the name of the game this time round. Melee you just don't stand a chance in hell. A combination of Ranged/Magic will see you through but once you start exploring the HM Dungeon and get spells like Magnet Sphere drop your kill potential goes through the roof. Once you also get things like the Shadowbeam Staff and the Diabolist spell on top of Spectre Armour you are almost unkillable.

Actually in a solo play through, naturally restarting for 1.2 I played solely as melee and got all the way to I guess what you'd call the end, didn't have very many issues as a solar eclipse is rather easy with a decent base in which I crafted a True Night's Edge fairly early on, my next big item upgrade was then the Chlorophyte melee set after which I farmed the Paladin in the dungeon for the Hammer; and killed him multiple times without cheese tactics, though the fight in it's self is kinda lulzy, as long as you keep attacking him he doesn't do anything but walk towards you, so a long'ish platform is all you need and melee backwards kinda thing.

I then farmed WoF a bunch for the three emblems for the combination of 'em + used a 2nd warrior's emblem at the same time, equipped with all this and the typical boss setup (cross necklace, regen band etc) was able to kill Plantera without too much trouble (used square-like structure around spawning plant, with wooden platforms) though that was a cool fight I had hoped for more of a challenge entering the jungle dungeon, which turned out to only take about 3 minutes to run from start to finish and the last boss was a complete pushover in comparison

TLDR: Melee is not "not viable" completed game melee only

Maybe "not a chance in hell" was a bit strong but solo doesn't have the spawn rates of the online MP and melee needs considerably more preparation than Magic did once we got hold of the Spectre Armour.

I wouldn't really call 'killing the Paladin using backwards melee and hoping he didn't attack' not a cheese tactic. The dungeon I was in certainly didn't have space for a long platform and when you have 5-10 other enemies spawning and the potential that at any moment a Diabolist or Necromancer will spawn in and shred you, you really don't have the luxury of that strategy.

Don't get me wrong, good effort for doing it. But it wouldn't have gone anywhere near as smoothly online with the higher spawn rates.

Eh well sure, didn't account for the MP spawn differences however with the Paladin there is no "hoping he doesn't attack", as long as you keep attacking him he won't throw his hammers and you can do that without getting close enough for him to just melee you.

I didn't use a long platform, just jumped over him and the time it takes to jump over him is not enough for him to start throwing the hammers, what I meant by not cheese tactic though is the one where people are getting him stuck behind a 4block simple wall and leaving a single gap and melee'ing (or casting, whatever) through that hole.

And not gonna argue that Magic is a lot easier to gear for and stronger overall :p

Whilst the server is in HM, I thought that I would play single player to gather the resources and compete against the bosses myself (never actually done this before). I have killed the Eye of Cthulu and also dug my way down to Hell. I am fully kitted in Platinum armour, but that is still a little weak in Hell. Where do I go from here? should I try to find the Sky island? Or do I look for the Corrupted Land and fight the corruption? I have also made a Slime Crown, so that is my next big fight :) .

Pretty much every different biome still has something for you. The sky islands have things, the jungle has things, the snow biome has different chest rewards. Getting all the most useful accessories out of gold chests is a big deal to your ability to deal with enemies too.

Definitely go to the corruption, the new armor you can get from farming the boss there a few times is a step up from platinum. It has more armor than the platinum set IIRC as well as a 4%(?) damage bonus and an increased health regen passive. Its the best all rounder armor you can get before HM. If you don't already know, the boss is easy enough to summon, you just have to destroy 3 orbs/hearts which are located in the corruption walls. To get to them you will need to use purification powder on the stone first and then mine through it.

If you've not been to the dungeon yet its also worth going there, the handgun you can find in chests can be crafted with molten bars into the best ranged weapon before hard mode(yes, the star cannons stronger, but who has an infinite supply of stars?). The muramasa is also worth finding as it can be crafted into the Nights Edge(?) which is the strongest melee weapon before HM. A cobalt shield will also come in handy, it shouldn't be too hard to find in the chests there. Last of all a shadow key can also be found in the chests there, it will allow you to open shadow chests in hell.

As for additional accessories/weapons you should have before you go into hard mode.
A red balloon from the sky islands, the islands are easy to find with a few gravity potions. Put the map so its full screen but transparent to easily keep at the right height while you search so you're not in danger of killing yourself.

An anklet of the wind and aglet which can be combined with other accessories like Hermes boots, the aglet should be easy to get a hold of but the anklet will be in the jungle somewhere.

Hermes boots, which can allow you to sprint, they can also be found in the jungle.

Goblin rocket boots are also worth picking up until you can craft wings, you can buy them from the goblin vendor or hope for a lucky drop during a goblin invasion

There's probably some stuff I missed out but I'm sure someone else can fill you in

so i installed this game after buying it on steam xmas sale ages ago, i created a small world and then messed around for 20 mins before quiting.

What do i actually need to do to start playing the game?

i gather wood and tried to make a bench of some sort but couldnt see anywere on the craft panel on the left of my screen that let me build a bench?

i try to stay away from online guides to find things out for myself but on this game i might have to as theres no intro really...?

Assuming you have enough wood you should just click on the small bench icon in the crafting panel and it will appear in your inventory for you to place somewhere.

After that you need to mine some stone, kill a few slimes for the gel so you can create torches with the extra wood. Then use the stone, wood and torches to make a forge.

Make a makeshift house out of wood/stone and put the stuff you've crafted so far inside then start digging down and collecting ore. You can process the ore into ingots and craft armor and such but its probably best to start with a better pick axe/broadsword as they're cheaper to make.

Don't panic if you die a lot at the start, just build a house, roam around and find a cave entrance into the ground. You will find lots of nice pots containg coins, arrows and health flasks. You may also be lucky to find houses with chests and some goodies. Loot the chest, dig it with your pickaxe and take it back to your home for storage.

I've been playing 1.2 for over a week now and really enjoying it. The added content and changes have me really looking forward to my next session. Unlocked hard mode last night.

Have been playing pretty faithfully though I must admit I went into an old world and brought back a dual hook. Exploring caves felt so slow without it.

Pretty much as Reeve says.

One thing you'll find is that the monsters at night will give you too much trouble for any meaningful exploration for a long time. If you get stuck outside I'd recommend just building a box around yourself and waiting till sunrise!

The other thing to do at night is explore underground. Either find a cave entrance or start digging straight down. Wood platforms are your friends here as you can jump on them to get back out.

I'd say using a guide beyond how to build a house, craft and do the basics is not needed and may take the fun out of exploration and discovery. On the other hand the wiki is massively helpful to find out what objects are and what you can craft with them.
