Test Drive Unlimited 3 is officially being made :)

Oh dear epic fail from me. Of course you are correct it even sampled the name accolade in the introduction.

I blame pre coffee.

As for crazy cars. I bought all 3 on release. 1 was ok for it's time I remember getting very excited about the engine sounds. .. 2 was terrible and had nothing going for it except the box art which was great but somehow depressing (all the cars from the 1st game on a scrap heap) ... But 3..... I dunno what happened there. It was incredible and one of the best arcade racers on the Amiga.

I think part of the disappointment was playing the speccy version first, my mate never got it for the Amiga:) Watching the video of number two on YT, it's painful. I think number three was a 16bit only game aimed at the console market, probably why the departure from the simplicity of the first games.

As for TDU, the more you think about it, does it really have a place with the Crew/2 around.

The crew/2 are boring empty lifeless environments.

Isnt crew etc racing games, tdu is about test driving all the posh cars you cant in real life and just having a nice drive in the town or countryside and not really racing even tho there are some racing in you dont have to do it. Personally i just like visiting the show rooms picking a nice car and testing it and go find some other cars and then save up for one i liked and just drive around.

Well TDU still involved racing. But the thing for me that I find important going forward is a more interactive or realistic environment, more traffic, pedestrians, perhaps even proper police and more furniture to give everything more depth. Sort of like GTA V map on a larger scale with similar traffic.

Yeah though TDU2 could have gone a lot further (things like missing pedestrians, etc.) it was the little touches, attention to small detail, that made the difference between games like that and TDU2.

Many hours spent power-sliding around in the RUF RTurbo on TDU1 in hardcore mode. Comparatively TDU2 did nothing for me and the fact that you could get a Golf GTI to slide better than most other cars simply by lifting off as you turned in to a corner was laughable. I appreciate lift-off over-steer exists, but what you had in that Golf GTI was ridiculous - admittedly it isn't a sim series, but come on. The handling model just wasn't the same as the original and that was the big issue for me, I completed all of the single player stuff, then one day switched the game off and never went back whereas I continued to play TDU1 for a further 200+ hours after completing it with nothing but cruising and drifting to do.

What gave TDU1 even more of an advantage was cruising around with a few of my friends doing silly jumps among other things and doing community based cruises with the forum I was/am a part of - I even used to get recognised in-game while cruising around which was quite weird. Sadly my friends haven't been interested after trying TDU2 and the old community isn't there because even though it was TDU dedicated forum TDU2 didn't seem to keep everyone interested for as long and it has been that long since the last game that a lot of them have moved on completely.

I don't want to be come across negative and rose tinted spectacles and all in this post, I hope TDU3 turns out great, but I'm also someone who hopes more time will be spent on sorting out the handling model rather than which tie goes with which shirt. TDU1 simply brought up to date would be a pretty good game in my book, but they'll have to do more than that because of what has happened to the Forza series since then. They'll put clothes, furniture and casinos in because it'll all be for mass appeal and its their game, but I'll never pay attention to that side of things for sure.

This will still be one of two games that I'm looking forward to with the other game being GTA VI, so I'm definitely hoping TDU3 will turn out decent.

It is hilarious and a bit frustrating as I'm a Golf fan but I actually found the mk6 Golf a bit like that though nothing like as exaggerated as in the game - steering a bit "snappy" without a good balance between not enough and too much input sometimes and potential for lift off oversteer.

(just over a year ago though I started driving a rear wheel drive, with selectable 4W, pickup truck and now front wheel drive hot hatches are ruined for me - I'd forgotten just how much I enjoy rear wheel drive and a big engine).

The handling in the game overall is a bit goofy but it also changes a lot car to car - some are much better implemented than others and while a bit caricature like in many cases actually reflect the stand out characteristics of the real world handling of the relevant car quite well - some are quite satisfying to drive if not entirely realistic.

I hope they realise how much TDU 1 and 2 had an impact on the community. I remember playing TDU 1 after school on the 360 and always had 3-4 people on mic to cruise around with, sadly that MS Account is long gone and no idea if it can be recovered. Also the game I did my first 24 hours gaming on lol.

TDU1 was absolute love. How they achieved a map and game so big all those years back now is astonishing. I really hope they don't fudge TDU3 up, I'm sick and tired of the hot mess that is Forza Horizon

Same with TDU2 - despite some ropey graphics in places i.e. waterfall effects the amount of detail and scale of the game map is part of what makes those games so great despite some issues with UI and the mechanics of how any group play, etc. works and so on and the physics LOL. They really should have put more effort into exploiting the world side of it.

I'm too have fond memories of pulling all nighters as a kid driving up and down hawaii in the first game in various cars, but I won't be playing the new one.

I'm happy for all the kids who will get to experience what I did though!

I haven't played any driving games since I passed my driving test 6 years ago. I found that driving a 50HP VW Polo in real life was tonnes more fun than driving a 1000HP supercar in a videogame.
