Thailand develops HIV vaccine

Trust DD to take this thread from looking forward to a cure for one of the most deadly diseases known to mankind to immigration.:rolleyes:
You know what?

This is exactly the problem with this country.

We have a problem: increased prevalence of really quite serious diseases (drug resitant TB, HIV to name but two).

We have a cause: immigration.

Wait. ****. We can't blame it on the ethnics/immigrants can we... okay... lets see... Shall we:

1) Deny the increased prevalance. Well we can't really do that can we!
2) Deny the cause. Lets blame someone else. Not really kosher, but they gays have been given a lot of agro over the years.
3) Ignore the cause. Bingo. Hell, lets accuse anyone of blaming it on the immigrants of being racist/right wring/fascist. This one is brilliant - we don't even need to solve the problem! Anyone mentioning it can be instantly dismissed. Awesome.

Again, there is a really freaking awesome preventative measure for HIV. It is called a condom. Until the Papacy dies out completely, that's no good. Stupid people listen to some stupid guy who basis his thoughts on his own damned backwards views.

HIV is a totaly preventable virus it doesn't need a vaccine, if you sleep about and use no protection there is a change that you are going to get it. I feel sorry for no adult that catchs it and I don't believe that it should be treated. If it can't be cures then it should not be treated, the quicker they die of the better.

Utter horse****. Anyone can contract it. Tell me you don't go to a nightclub hoping to get laid with someone you don't know.

And here's the thing - condoms are NOT 100% effective against preventing the contraction of STD's.

Some of you people clearly have very little experience of sex related matters.

Why didn't you insult him like you did me? Anyway.

With a condom the risk of catching HIV is reduced by about 85% (some studies suggest up to 96%). Given the risk is 5 in 10,000 (penile>vaginal). That takes the risk down to about 0.00075% with a condom (75 in 100000). Just a comparison, the chance of non-smoking man aged 40 dying is 7 in 10,000.

I'll take the condom thanks.

Because he's just hopped on the bandwagon. You're driving it.

And I never said using condoms was a bad thing. But they are not 100%. If one of your loved ones contracts the disease through no fault of their own, I can guarantee you will do a complete U-turn with regards to your attitude to the disease. But until then, enjoy that comfy sadle up there on your high horse.

I'm not entirely sure what I've said that's upset you, but I will apologise. I can ensure you I wouldn't U-turn as I think you've misunderstood me - I would be ****** crushed. Although there is a very, very low chance of something happening through no fault of their own (rape aside).

My aversion is towards immigration causing the spread, gay men being blamed, people not using condoms (your point accepted), general promiscuity in society, the Papacy and religion in general condemning condoms, the rampant sex and rapes in SS. Africa further spreading HIV, the HIV+ parents that have children (again particularly in Africa) and so on. All logical aversions.

Thats the very thing, people go clubing pull the local bike and have no idea about sexual heath. As for condoms if you are with the local bike or some girl you don't know, then take it easy and don't rip the thing. Better still don't jump on every bike you see.

/me sigh...

There are more than 1 way to catch HIV. Off my head

1 - intercouse, knowing or otherwise (there are cases where men and woman intentionally go out and infect others)
2 - sharing needles, drug use or otherwise
3 - getting a blood transfusion (at the hospital !)
4 - exchange of bodily fluids, that means cuts on your hand.
5 - Babies who's mother has it

After having a quick scan through the thread I can see there a lots of different opinions, my questions is: Should we develop a vaccine?

I've lost friends to AIDS and Cancer, it is heart breaking to see them that way but I always wonder what will happen to the world if we cure these types of illness?

Massive population booms, famine, etc.

As nasty as it sounds, we need population controls, whether natural or man made.

It is extremely sad to see and African child starving or dying of an illness, but if we stop the starving or cure the illness, will the parents stop having so many children?

You know the 'local bikes' in every bar/nightclub in the world, do you? And thanks for the condom advice. I knew I was going wrong somewhere...

There is also a small chance of it being transmitted via saliva.
No there isn't. Whilst HIV is found in saliva etc. neither saliva, tears, or sweat have been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

Seriously though, surely you've ******* yourself once when one's split?!

And numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 for the general public are a non issue and poss no risk to the bulk of us.

To be fair if they did actually listen to the advice from the Catholic Church rather than just one part of it then HIV transmission rates would drop like a stone. For some reason they listen to the "Don't use condoms" bit but completely ignore the "Don't have sex outside of marriage" bit.

Can you say 100% impossibility? confident enought you are willing to snog someone with HIV?

I don't think so.

But how many of those are down to the fault of a family member and of those that are what percentage of HIV / AIDS victims does that make up (well above 99% IIRC).

Now I'm all for helping people [3] and [4] who genuinely contracted a disease through no fault of their own or a family member. But the rest? Should we (and lets not beat around the bush it would be the west's money here) pay $1 trillion to help people and their families who can't use a condom?

Now [5] is a difficult issues. On the one hand part of me thinks that those that we help live longer increase their risk of infecting someone else (or multiple more people) and the sa,e time it isn't "right" to just let them die.

If we where going to through $1 trillion at a medical issue, I'd much rather it be spent on cancer research IMO
