*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Is it just me or do yous have trouble getting back to the changing room and walking the next day?

I live around the courner so have a 2 minute walk home. Though those two minutes feel like my legs are on fire! Tisn't a decent leg workout if you're legs aren't collapsing under the weight of your own body or shaking uncontrollably!

Amen brother :p Thought I was alright this morning 'til I tried getting out of my car - low car's are a tad awkward at the best of time, mega DOMs!

Couple of questions:
THE FIRST! Someone mentioned a decent iPhone application a few weeks ago for tracking fitness/improvements etc (think it may have been a discussion between Morba and Freefaller), what was the name of it? I write all mine down in the Notes section at the moment and nearly deleted it all once already!

THE SECOND! I always start my training days with 4 scrambled eggs, and obviously eat lots of protein during the day. However on my rest days or cardio days, I normally start with 4 wheatabix, or as I'm out of them today, a bowl of alpen. Should I still be eating protein heavy breakfasts if I'm not lifting that morning?

THE THIRD! Nah I'm only joking, that's all ;)

You should always eat a quick release protein first thing when you wake up. If you think about it, you've been asleep for hopefully, at least 8 hours. During those 8 hours you've had no new protein source, so your muscles really do need that protein. That's why a shake first thing when you wake up is good

Or any other quick release protein, training day or not. Remember, you're growing more when you're out the gym :)

Ahh I see! What are some examples of quick release protein?

What I've started doing is cooking the odd chicken breast etc, so that if I get peckish I can just pop in to the fridge and om nom nom one of them! Gotta be better than most other snack foods you can get :)

Whey Protein, digests in about 20 minutes so great for when you wake up. Then about half hour later, have your full proper breakfast, whatever that maybe.

Eggs are good and fish :)

As much as I want to squat, it seems my body doesn't want me to. Knees ache after squating and my old injury flares up. Guess I will have to stick to leg press.

Yeah, don't squat if it's not comfortable.

People think that because of the praise it gets, you absolutely have to squat for legs. Sure it helps. And it definitely does get the old testosterone going, as does any big compound lift.

But, that's not too say if you don't do it your legs won't grow. Lifting heavy and with better form on other leg exercises will get you much further than lighter and bad form due to injury on squats

Just do what feels right for you

I should probably purchase some whey then - keep meaning to try it but haven't got round to it yet! I know Freefaller doesn't really buy in to the shakes as he thinks there's no subsitute for 'real food', but I can imagine I'd end up being a two-shake-a-day man if I go down this path. One in the morning, and one straight after my workout - I just don't know if it's the Right thing to be doing?

Freefaller definitely isn't wrong when he says they aren't a replacement for proper food, and it's great if you can afford to eat as much as he does :p and the quality of food. But there is nothing wrong with shakes at all, as long as you are using them purely as they are intended. A supplement, not as a replacement for meals.

So one in the morning, as long as you intend on eating a proper breakfast as well is fine. But I do think one post-workout is essential, especially if you're not in the position where you can eat a good meal within half hour of finishing your workout. As that really is the window where your muscles desperatley need protein.

Get some Whey, a 2kg bag should last you months and months, 2 a day absolute max. And make sure you don't use them just as a lazy alternative to a good meal

You'll be fine :)

I take shakes, but that becuse i literally can't afford to buy the food, if I could, I would basicaly as I'd rather eat something than just ram a shake down my neck...but at the moment, it works.

Yeah, whey is fine substitute or addition to your diet if proper food is not an option. However as you know from me (:o) I much prefer whole foods but I perhaps budget for more food than a lot of you and maybe can afford it. Don't get me wrong a shake is convenient I'm not too blinkered or short sighted to admit that. As I've said if I've had a poor food day I do use shakes or if stuck in day long meetings. Just like in cars where there's no replacement for displacement, for me there's not replacement for food. Not just because it tastes good, but there's a whole physiological reaction to eating food and a psychological one too which does have a positive effect on digestion and also your mood. Sounds wishy-washy but there is science behind it. :)

The app I use is called gymbuddy.
