*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

Seasoned? Just a beginner! I guess 18s are to much will probably try 12s then for now.

Get some adjustables and start light. I started with 6's I think. Not that I found them tough but I wanted my form and technique to be correct. Also if you do tip over one way the less weight you have the less risk of injury there is. So while you still make errors the less weight that's available to hit you should you drop it the better.

Can anyone recommend some decent adjustables on a budget then? I do have a gym membership but wouldn't feel right doing some TGU's and other exercises at the gym.

Find space on a mat and get on with it tbh. After a few weeks people will be asking you what the hell you are doing :)

This.

I found I moved around so much when I was doing them at the gym. And as you never take your eye off the DB/KB you're unaware of this so will more than likely end up against a wall or trying to lye back down and hit it head first.

The arm must be kept perfectly straight and perpendicular to the floor. Thing with light weights is that it's easy for the arm to shift. You really have to twist around it's great fun and I do quite miss them!

I started a thread here somewhere about them. I might have linked some decent tutorials. I'd recommend starting with a DB/KB windmill to get the idea of how the arm must stay perpendicular at all times. This is a more direct core exercise and hamstring stretch. You can do single overhead, single underhead and double windmills  (one in each hand )

Curious question, i feel like nipping to the gym later on. But i have been yesterday so my usual routine would be tomorrow. Do you reckon i should go today or give my cns a lie in?

Oddly felt flat and small yesterday, yet in the mirror looked outstanding, go figure :D

Oh the flip side, this low gi bulk is working great, figured i put on muscle easy trouble is i pack on fat just as bad. My gangly forearms aren't as gangly anymore.

Yeah i'll leave it go, i have a very mild cold just hanging on in there. Sooner knock it on the head, plus it's a biggie and my favourite session tomorrow, so at least i can go all out then.

So for a bit of a lol I thought I'd do 3x8 instead of 3x5, and try working at a higher rep range.

3x8 90kg squat
3x8 70kg bench
2x8 115kg dead (could not manage 3rd set, bar was slipping out my hands)
3x8 45kg close grip bench press
3x8 20kg dumbbell flies

brb not being able to walk tomorrow
brb my triceps killing already

3x8 is a lot more than 3x5 (62% more).....

LOL

Going to be DOMSinated tomorrow, I can feel it!

Sod it... I'm going to give HST a go. It's not my style of training, but I've done a lot of strength stuff, and whilst I want to progress, I thought I'd give this a god - a new type of training won't do me any harm. :)

What HST routine you going to follow?

And did my change of rep range inspire you? Haha

I was meant to crack on with HST a while back actually. But seemed to have opted for volume training instead! Soon to end though. Then some strength work and then will see if I can sort something out for HST.

Be interested to hear what you make of it FF. I know Morba's a fan.

Yeah I'll let you know. Doing a rolling split... i.e. 1 day on 1 day off etc... However, I may interrupt the program with a day of powerlifting (HC2PP, PP, Powercleans, Deads). It's going to be interesting doing 10 exercises in a session but it'll be interesting. It's going to be 8 weeks long altogether. It'll be interesting how I get on. I've modified the exercises to suit me.

Hahahaha just had a bit of a laugh during training.

The regular gym was full, so a friend and I was told we could go into the one for the Rugby Players.

I was cranking out some Romanian Deadlifts ( good form I might add, straight back knees slightly bent) when the one Rugby couch came in telling me I'm doing it all wrong.

I'm not bending my legs enough and that I need to push through my hips, since I'm just going to hurt myself.

Then he says I should drop the weight because 110kg is far to heavy for the likes of me being I'm so small and that I'll only do an injury since I can't even bend my legs all the way for a normal deadlift.

I just looked at him and agreed with everything he said, and did 2-3 normal deadlifts just so he'd leave.

My friend next to me didn't know what to say he just had a massive smirk and nodded.

Haha, it was great considering when he came in he looked at us like "WTF are you doing here". He especially didn't look to pleased when we told him we're not in the sports courses and doing business and science instead.

I think I'd stick to taking advice from Mark Ripptoe and Dave Tate instead. :p

Yay I'm back at the gym :D

I've only been maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 4 months..

Anyway, instead of the leisure centre and it's 'modest' free weights array combined with business, I've found a proper gym which is all free weights bar a few hammer strength machines, lots of guys with good advice and no-one messing around in the way.. bliss.

£25/month and it's 5mins from my house.. happy days! I've been twice so far, and except for the insane doms that accompanies such a gym-going absence, it's great :)

Should've pretended you were Romanian and didn't speak any English...

No no no. What you should have done was put 4 plates aside on and then deadlifted it up and asked him to hold it for you for a second.

Or snatch 180KG and then throw it at him whilst shouting 'CATCH!'

Sounds interesting.

The few times I have done push/pull or upper/lower hypertrophy/strength splits I really enjoyed being able to give each exercise my best efforts.
