*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

I think I'm back.

Just had a ****ing monster session today. Getting back up to strength too - just missed out on a 240kg deadlift (1/2 way up  ) on my 6th set. 3 reps @ 100kg pushpress after deads. 80 min session. Hard. Sweaty. Dead. Love it.

I'm still doing "HST" but I've modified the programme to suit me - i.e. add more volume by including supersets/subsidiary exercises.

Feeling good. Won't be breaking PBs - but damn if I'm going to get back up to full strength / power.

Well for some reason I had an absolutley tosh nights sleep last night! Probaly to do with the dilemma of trying to kick start some Personal Training.

A quick google brought up a small gym behind my local towns high street which despite being small looks reasonably well equiped and a little bit more 'hardcore' than my current, some tyre flipping on the short video on their site :D The website portrayed it to be what looked like a small business that didn't seem the type to rent out to external PT's.

I decided to drop an e-mail and much to my suprise recieved an almost instant reply explaining he has a couple of external trainers who pay a monthly rental to bring clients into the gym and that he would like to meet to discuss rates and numbers :) Hopefully I can negotiate something on a per-session basis.

Currently I only have 1 client who has just joined my current gym but could very easily cancel his membership as it is within the 14 day cooling period, should he want to.

I know this isn't the usual topic of discussion in this thread but thought I'd post my progress for anybody who is interested as I know we have a few fellow PT's in training amongst us.

Don't contact to hesitate me, Ha, Benny that is one of the best mistakes I've seen!

Did an epic (for me) back day:
Wide Grip Pull Up - Assisted Pull Up Machine
40kg x 10 (warm up)
20kg x 5
25kg x 5
25kg x 5
25kg x 5
25kg x 5

Close Grip Pull Up - Assisted Pull Up Machine
25kg x 8
25kg x 8
25kg x 8

Dead lift:
40kg x 10 (warm up)
65kg x 10
70kg x 10
75kg x 10
80kg x 10 (new personal best)
40kg x 15

Should have probably tried for some more volume but I was dripping with sweat by now and the back was aching somewhat!

Then finished off with 3x10 @ 35kg on the cable seated low row machine we have :)

Did Triceps as well but that's just quite normal and boring!

That's excellant news though Benny

You'll have to just go along to the smaller Gym to A.) see what its like and B.) as you say get a gist of numbers and see how people are there :)

I hope it works out for you

Be loevely to be able to just do a job like that all day...But obviously it isnt always just pushing weights :p

I almost did it again this morning!

I had a reply, so he obviously made sense of it :p

Ben,

Thank you for your CV.

We currently only allow those employed by us on a regular basis to PT at William Penn.

We are reviewing how we operate PT across all of our sites and may look to introduce a free lance style approach to PT from externals.

I will hold your CV on file incase this situation changes.

Until such time all PT must be provided by our own staff

Many Thanks

Bit of a shame as it's 2 minutes walk round the courner however working for them is a total joke so I'm told from the other instructors. Offering 1 free session of PT with each new membership without asking or informing the instructors with no intention of paying them!

This other option is the only other place near to me that I can actually rent at before going to big chains and having to fork out big bucks for the privallege. Hopefully he'll understand my situation and fingers crossed can come up with something that works for both of us.

Just be honest man...best thing

I think in this instance being completely honnest isn't the best approach. Letting somebody know they've got the one and only of something you need and are basically on your knees to whatever they're willing to charge you. May as well just bend over and present!

It does appear to be very small but still reasonably well equipped. Once I've had a look around I'll be able to see it's potential.

There are other locations that I can do this, I'm sure there are more personal training studios over in Watford which is still local but further than I wish to commute.

Hopefully once I'm in there I can pick up a couple more clients. I'll also send some advertising e-mails around the offices at work and hopefully be able to generate a small client base reasonably quickly.

Point taken I guess...I dunno, its just how I am I guess....I'd rather try and get in than sacrifice having no where to go! :p

Maybe you should convert your home stuff into a PT'ing area? ;)

I know what you mean about being honnest and I agree with it for the most part but at the same time you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot.

If only I had the space I deffinatley would!

He mentioned he has 'a couple' of other PT's that rent from him which would suggest it's quite low as opposed to several.

Deffinatley ridiculously tempted to use capital I have for property and just buy somewhere on an industrial estate and turn it into a 'warehouse' gym.

There's a film called Dodgeball where someone does that..........? Hiliarious incidents will ensue!

When I was doing my Dead Lifts, there was a lad who I've spoken to a few times who came over and I persuaded him to join in as he was doing his back as well. I couldn't believe it was actually the first time he's done DLs! Had a bit banter with him and turns out he's doing legs on wednesday at the same time as me. My thinking is that if it's the first time he's done DLs, then I can't imagine he pushes himself that hard on squats/leg press........ So I'm going to see how far I can push him! Will see if I can use Benny and Freefaller's philosopy of volume, volume and more volume :p

He may well do, I'm just not overly optimistic that it's true! You tried any BW exercise yet mate?

Not yet...its hard to get the motivation again at the moment, house is a tip cause people dont tidy up properly, and a shed load of other stuff is annoying me atm! :p

My G/F is working late wednesday so I will do some bits and bobs then...probably start with some skipping then do some RC warmups or something...and squats obviously...BW if anything!

I have a feeling doing press-ups would destroy it...just holding the shoulder up with my arm weight ends up making it tingle :p :(

It's been almost a month since I joined the gym now, really enjoying it. Started of 2 times every week but that has just been upped to 3 times a week now, as 2 times doesn't feel enough.

I was intending to use the machines for the first month but moved over to free weights much quicker, prob after the first week! One thing I don't do is squats, are they very important or can you get around it with other exercises?

Managed 340KG on the leg press tonight, still wish I could squat though.

How tall are you and how much do you weigh?

I am quite slim/skinny, 6ft tall and ~11.5 stones. I started off on the leg press at 180kg about 2 weeks ago but was managing 260kg last week. I have nothing to compare it against though.

WOOOHOOO! :D
