The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Very nice plant, dont do anything to it it is fine mate. Just leave it and it will grow when its ready. I have a few like that, they keep short cos of the cold at nights. Whereas in my bedroom the pc keeps the room nice and warm and the plants love it and grew better in that room than the other rooms. So if ud like taller plants keep em nice and warm.

Oh and on another note my greenhouse is empty as had to move all my stuff indoors cos of the wind, its already damaged some plants. :( Always happens with me, do somit and somit ruins it as in buy it last week put it up this week storm force winds up to 50-60 mph. :(

Valve are they under grow lights? Look similar to how mine where when younger.

Now all 5 are flowering including the naga :)

The two hot cherrys are going all out, they going to break with all the chilis.

Did you get that from Asda, got one for the garden, my chili have little flower buds on them about 5mm long so looking good.

I bought it in Wilkinsons, £12, bargain! It's crammed full now, everything has grown so much since being in there! No flowers on the chillis yet, but they have really filled out. :)

That's good to hear, they've been outside for the last couple of weeks and i guess it's probably been a bit cold out at nights, think I'll start bringing them in at night until it warms up a bit more.

Nope, they've just been out in the sun. I started them in a propagator then stuck them into the pots they are in now (8 inch diameter). They didn't grow for a couple of weeks or so which i guess was the roots growing, but since then they've been outside (eased into as it got hotter) and been growing leaves like mad!

My peppers are still lil baby things.
They've put on a growth spurt recently but I am sure only 6hours direct sun in the morning doesn't help things.
And I only planted about a month a go.
Here's a crap photo of them:

Weirdly the grouped plants are growing better. The 3 grouped togeather I decided the roots were too tangled and to prise apart so left them, so guessing they are currently doing better due to not having to put much energy into new roots. Will be leaving them I think and growing them as three and creating a "pepper bush."
Other plants in the same pots are due to running out of space and pots.
Currently have 30 in total!

They look fine Valve.

Bring them inside at night like you suggested. Mine have never been outside and are placed on the windowsill of a warm southish facing window.

Also try a bit of compost tea. Basically i think its just a cup from a bag of soil u buy or proper compost u do urself i duno and soak it for 24 hrs in 2litres or so of water and feed that to the plants, should give it a boost i think. Not tested it personally yet as im still tryin to find worm castings to try. But i hear its good. If you do try it get some cheese cloth or somit so as to strain the soil from water so u dont get bits in ur compost tea when you pour it in ur watering can or whatever u use.

I bought two packets from Next yesterday. Have opened the mini grow bag and planted the seeds with some water.

How often do chillis need watering ?

How long before shoots appear too ?

From Next? As in the clothes shop? :o :p

Shoots should appear within 2 -3 weeks. Periods between watering change depending on the conditions... how hot ts is etc. I've always stuck to an "as needed" basis. Just check how damp the soil is with your little finger and water accordingly. Don't over-water and don't under-water :)

Tried a tiny piece of Naga Viper at the weekend at a local food fair, omg I've never experienced anything like it. Entire face burning, eyes watering, head sweating, instant chilli hiccups. Amazing. Fun though.

As would I, looks like some nice chilis.. No idea though. What are they, if you google the variety. It usually tells you about the ripening process and how long it takes.

Depends with jalapenos i know u can pick when just 1inch big or when there 2inch big. I would guess its the same for most. Obviously as acid said consult the net for the type and check details on harvesting and look at average picking size.

Hmm dont look much like em i.e bit skinny on the bottoms. If your desperate you could pinch one off and try it. But if you can wait a week or 2 they should be a lot better.

He's mine, coming along nicely now.

They are Apache Chillies, I got the kit from the big river as its my fisrt year. I cant wait to pick a few and see what they are like. I'm going to try a few different types next year.

Looks cool. Why do they have pebbles on the soil is it good for drainage.. ?
