The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Ahh pebbles make it look nice :)

I wanna pick my chillis, getting excited!

Patience young Pedawin.

My Nagas are being very slow this year.. I think they need some feeding as the soil must be completely spent by now. Although it's been really cold too which probably confuses the poor things. I have flowers on two the other is really not bothering.

Hehe finally the Naga from the seeds Nick sent me has fruited. Got about 4 or five small chillies growing :).

I had it in a 3 litre pot last year and it grew pretty big, then plonked it in a 5 litre and have now upped it to a 10l tub. Its already dominating the greenhouse lmao.

Also got loads of Pointed sweet peppers growing, also put them into 10l tubs to get them as big as possible. Then 9 tomato plants that are now getting as big as they grew last year at the end of summer, so hopefully they should ripen this time. This greenhouse is a godsend, last year I would have had them all inside all month as its so windy.

Did anyone hear the word HARVEST?!? Hell yeah.

Just taken off 20 of the ~80 currently growing on the 5 plants I overwintered from last year. 224g of chilli goodness - some of them are pretty chunky:

These are off the five plants in the larger pots that are (precariously) balanced on my bedroom windowsill. They're quite big plants now, but the top shoots have sagged under the weight of the crop, so they look smaller than they really are :p

I've got 18 plants in total this year, so I'm hoping for a decent crop ... 3 Nagas, 1 Scotch Bonnet, 1 Orange Wonder, and 8 mix and match (haven't fruited yet, so I'm not sure what they are). The gf gave a mandate that some of last year's had to be given to friends to make space for the sunlight to come in, so two have passed on (RIP :(), but the kitchen windowsill and the window in the spare room are also full, so she did have a point :p There's an equivalent sized window in the lounge that I'm eyeing up, but that's got fuschias on at the moment, so I'll have to bide my time.

Look great, nice one. :)

As said, what will you do with them? Maybe make some money by betting ur mates to eat one and the one who doesnt take milk or whatever wins. :p

Wow, thats pretty amazing that they have ripened already . Gahh, if only we had some sun every now and again up north.

Sweeeeeeeeeeettttttt.... What are you going to make?
Well my main usage for them will be a hot sauce (A.N.Other's hot sauce, anyone ;)!) but these aren't super-hots, so I'll either have to buy some Scotch Bonnets to go in with them or wait for some of my own (though that's probably going to be a while). I'm definitely going to do some chilli oils this year too.

It's looking likely that I'm going to have a little under 1kg in the first crop, and I'm hoping for two from these plants, so I don't think I'm going to have a shortage of options. Most of them will be used in cooking, though. I'm looking forward to overwintering some super-hots this year so that I can get some proper crops out of them next time around.

Any other suggestions for what to do with them :p ?

I've just been using tomorite. Got 14 Cayennes coming, some are up to 2" long at the moment. They need to hurry up and ripen!

Also got quite a few scotch bonnet buds emerging :D

They're actually only on a NE facing window (the Naga's have prime position on the SW facing side). I put their size and crop mainly down to Chilli Focus - http://www.southdevonchillifarm.co.uk/shop/index.php?target=products&product_id=91 1ltr bottle for £4.85. Bargain of the millennium! And no, I'm not affiliated :o

You should be :D. Going to have to get some of this stuff. Shame they add £4.90 on for delivery though, £9.75 is a rip-off when you can get a 1l bottle of tomorite for £3 odd.

I'll see if they have any in wilkos, or my local garden center.

well this is my best plant, doesn't look like it but over 30chillis on it another 2 dozen+ flowers and a shed load more flower buds. I cant believe how many chillis. It's just starting to wilt. they are getting through 2/3 of a litre every well was 3 days, but as you can see it's already starting to wilt, so about 2 and a half days now. Haven't got a hole load of chilli focus left either now. Need to order another bottle.

Very nice, seems this chilli focus is good stuff.

Where do you get it from? Every online store I can find that stocks it charge a ridiculous amount for delivery, making a 1 litre bottle cost around a tenner.

Also how often do you feed them? I read that you can feed them 4 times a week with Chilli Focus, seems a bit excessive when tomorite is recommended to be used at half strength every 2 weeks. Although I have been using it full strength every week on my Pointed peppers and it seems to be giving them a boost in size.

I've been bringing my chillies in at night for the last week or so, and kept them in on the chillier days last week (no pun intended!), and they seem to have grown a little, they're still only about 9-10 inches tall at the moment but gradually getting a bit bigger.

I have been very pleased to notice that there have been loads of buds on all my plants, which I have pinched off for now but when the plants are a bit bigger I'm hoping they should give me a good batch of chillies!
