The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

My chilli plants are growing nicely now they have a greenhouse :) But, what I think are flowers are appearing already on a couple of plants. The jalapenos are about 10 in tall and both have little buds, and my scotch bonnet is only about 6 in tall but has the same appearing.

Are the plants currently too small for this? Should I pick the buds off and let the plant grow more first, or just leave them to it?

I can get some photos once the gardener has finished mowing around them.

Thanks.

Pic update, they are now wilting after about 40 hours.

scruffeh, im guessing they need a repot about now and maybe there not getting enough sun.

Acid my guess is it is either stress or a watering issue or heat issue. Determine if the light is too hot, do you have a fan (Just noticed u do but it might not be strong enough now and is it air in or air out of the area as ideally u need both) to circulate the air as once ur grow area gets bigger the less effective the heat is dissipated so it could be a temp issue. If not then look at watering, as they grow fruits they need more water and on a more regular basis as the fruits grow. Failing this, check if it is getting pot bound which can cause a little stress as there trying to find space to spread their roots. Just some thoughts that it could be due to the wilting.

I've only recently moved them back into the mini greenhouse, and they should be getting a fair bit of sun later in the day (facing SSE - pic was taken this morning, just before 9)

Would you suggest potting all the ones on the top into pots the size of the bottom ones?

Thanks for the input..

Bought one of these yesterday, spent yesterday evening constructing it and re-potting plants, and put them outside today!

Was planning on planting a few more seeds, but ran out of compost as I bought some new quite large pots.

Harvested 3 chilli's the other day too, about 2 inches, trying to spur on some more growth :D

Did anyone hear the word HARVEST?!? Hell yeah.

Just taken off 20 of the ~80 currently growing on the 5 plants I overwintered from last year. 224g of chilli goodness - some of them are pretty chunky:

These are off the five plants in the larger pots that are (precariously) balanced on my bedroom windowsill. They're quite big plants now, but the top shoots have sagged under the weight of the crop, so they look smaller than they really are :p

I've got 18 plants in total this year, so I'm hoping for a decent crop ... 3 Nagas, 1 Scotch Bonnet, 1 Orange Wonder, and 8 mix and match (haven't fruited yet, so I'm not sure what they are). The gf gave a mandate that some of last year's had to be given to friends to make space for the sunlight to come in, so two have passed on (RIP :(), but the kitchen windowsill and the window in the spare room are also full, so she did have a point :p There's an equivalent sized window in the lounge that I'm eyeing up, but that's got fuschias on at the moment, so I'll have to bide my time.

Hello,

Ive noticed your chilli's are huge.

this year is my first year growing chilli's as my wife bought me a chilli growing kit to start with.

What chilli's are these that you are growing?

i do have some anaheims, demon reds and hungarian hot wax chilli's.

is the hot sauce you talk about a secret recipe or are you willing to share?

Thanks

Joel

I just tasted one of my Jalpenos chillis. A big fella.

OMG It was so hot... It was like a scotch bonnet. I thought Jalapenos were meant to be mild !

It tasted nothing like the ones I get on my Pizza... (my nose is still running, that will teach me hehe).

Jalapenos on pizza are not really the same as fresh ones. For a start they probs use pickled jalapenos so the hotness is probably less than what a fresh one would be.

My "Early Jalapenos" has just started flowering in the last few days. So got another month or two till there ready to pick. :( Still there getting there and i got 5 apache plants which are doing good and 5 i think early jalapenos 5 bell peppers and that big jumbo bell pepper one thats fruiting well.

Should have a good harvest this year. Might try drying some and making a powder or canning some if i can be bothered. Defo will probably freeze a lot of em as im on my own so eating 100 chillis when there all done and picked will leave my butt very sore and mouth probably burned away the taste buds. Which is not something i want to happen. :p

Still debating weather to put some chilli or bell peppers outside in greenhouse cos last year when i had some outside they did shockingly poor compared to indoor chilli plants.

Yeah, I dont know what im going to do with my chillies I got about 20 Jalapeños growing just off 1 plant. Then I have my cayennes growing as well.

My south facing window plants do the best (24" tall ) .. it gets well hot down here, they are twice the size of the east facing window.. so none of that taking them in-out business.

I'll finally get some more pics taken over the long weekend (I've got Friday off, yay). Got plenty of Cayennes at around 3" long and the Scotch bonnets are ready to flower.

My best apache chilli atm, tempted to cut it off and stick it in the curry im doing atm but already got 2 long red ones chopped and ready as they needed using up.

Apache at about 3cm ish?

Edit - And a better overall pic of em.

Cant see them growing much bigger so i think their harvestable now but ll leave it on till i need it. I think i have about 40+ buds/flowers/chillies each on the 2 large 2ft apache plants in my bedroom, they love being in the warm bedroom thanks to the pc lol. Yeah there stretched as not supose to be 2ft tall but meh there very productive so i dont care if there a bit tall when they shouldnt really have moved past 1ft.

Plenty of chillies there Skeeter. Its odd how they appear to be growing horisontally.

The Cayenne plants are looking like this:

With chillies like this:

And there's a retarded one who doesn't like growing chillies but instead likes to grow upwards and looks like this:

The Scotch Bonnets are looking very healthy and have begun flowering (yay):

However, there doesn't seem to be any pollen in the flowers... so I don't know whats cracking off there.

Ive noticed your chilli's are huge.
They are pretty large now (in fact one is now reaching the next bar up on the window !), but these are last year's plants that have been overwintered, so don't expect year 1 plants to be the same size. It wasn't a new photo when I posted that, but for a size comparison, the 2 in the smaller pots there are this year's.
What chilli's are these that you are growing?
Those are actually seeds from some chillies I bought from Sainbury's. Two observations: 1) I figured they'd be selected for large crop sizes and easy-growing, so that's why I tried them out, and 2) they're considerably hotter than the originals they came from - I assume there was either some cross-pollination going on or that they just love my attention :D

More than willing to share, and in fact already have ... http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18392416&postcount=232. Not sure if anyone's used the recipe yet - haven't commented, if they have - but I'd be interested to see what you think if you do have a go. I'm just getting to the end of those two bottles now, and it all still tastes fine.
You're very welcome! Good luck with your chillies :)

I think thats because they grew slower, all fruit and veg will show more flavour when grown slowly, forced fruit and veg doesnt have time to develop the flavour as well.

My small strawberry pots produces fruit that are just so sweet and tasty compared to supermarket strawbs which are bland and flavourless.

My Halepeno last year were really hot, especially the first fruit that took ages to fully ripen.
