The 2012 Chilli growing thread - the second burn!

I wouldn't you're better of looking at water, heat, light.

There's more than enough nutrients in soil to start with and to much nutrients harms the roots or something and die.

I have ~8 each cherry reds and purple beauties on the go. I foolishly planted them in October, but they're starting to go mad now so I think/hope they'll be fine. I should probably re-pot them this weekend (I will if I remember anyway).

Last year, my cayennes and scotch bonnets were seriously hit by aphids. Can anyone recommend a foolproof and safe method of controlling them? I thried diluted washing liquid in a spray bottle which failed miserably, and it's too easy to miss some if you go around squishing them.

Arrr don't bother with Baby Bio yet! anathi killed his entire first patch with the stuff!

A sad day indeed.

I believe tomato food is better suited over Baby Bio for chillis when they start flowering.

If you do use Baby Bio, be sure to dilute! ;)

Would be interested in a solution to this! I just tried to knock as many of them off as I could last year, nothing special!

I think this year I'm going to get some ladybird larvae and see what they do.

My parcel of 40, 10 litre pots turned up yesterday, I cant wait til my plants are ready to be potted up :D

LOL, unfortunately only about 25 are going to be used for chilli's because not all my seeds germinated, with the other 15 I'm going to do some sweet peppers and probably toms.

What worked for me last year when i had 2 serious infestations

1 - Scrape off all the eggs under the leaves with a small paintbrush followed by spraying them with a mild fairy liquid / water mixture, you only need a small drop of the fairy liquid <- that got rid of the first lot but make sure as soon as you notice 1 theres probably hundreds of eggs under the leaves

2 - Make another solution up with garlic cloves and some of the hottest chillies you can get hold of, mash everything up and add to the water and spray away, apparently aphids hate capsaicin lol

last resort is chemicals which will do a good job of killing anything but always a last resort for me

Update on mine isn't good........................

Woke up one morning last week and the compost had completely dried out and all 30 odd plants were DEAD, all 30 odd plants ffs.....:( i suppose that will teach me for using ****** B%Q see compost and not john innes

Sooo... had to order some mature plugs from here - http://www.worldofchillies.com/chilli-plants/buy-chilli-plants.html - got a very good service from these guys

Picked 12 in total to last me this year as i can't be arsed germinating any more seeds, I'll post some pictures up when i get chance to take them over the weekend

Got one chili on the naga. That's how many I managed to pollinate last year. Went round with a paint brush again today. So crossing fingers.

Why are they so hard to pollinate compared to other chillis?

Right, so my Jalapenos are escaping from the bottom of their 10cm pots. I'm going to put them in their final pots next, so what size should I get? I'm not willing to repot again (it costs too much with the amount of plants that germinated).

Also I moved them outside into a mini plastic greenhouse, they seem happier than on my windowsill for some reason (the soil was starting to go mouldy indoors). I'm probably doing this completely wrong but I'm happy as long as they keep growing :P

the only ones i am having trouble with are the white habereroes (sp)
they are only 1cm tall and do not seem to be growing at all but my fresnos are really going for it. cant work it out.

Habs can be very slow. I've got three growing this year, all sown at the same time, and one has shot ahead and is around 9cm tall. The other two are probably 2cm tall. Same thing happened last year. They caught up eventually!

A few of mine are starting to get their second set of leaves through :)

I know you're meant to re-pot when they grow them but at what stage?
My best one looks like this:

I'm slightly gutted as I cannot find the bleeding chilli seeds Ive collected over the last couple of years. Moving house is a bitch (I blame the mrs).

Anyway, I've just slapped in an order with chilliseeds:

Just going to order some veg as well now I think. Pack up that greenhouse!!

Found this thread after I had already decided to grow chillies for the first time. Bought a 10 pack of Demon Red, planted 4th March, had them covered for a week in airing cupboard until they started sprouting, and now they're sunning themselves happily inside on my south-facing windowsill. Mostly between 2-3cm with second set of leaves coming through. One or two of them are a bit slower coming up but I have 7 plants around about the same size that are looking good. At the moment still giving them sprayed tap water once a day as the sill is pretty warm with the recent sunshine.

Fingers crossed this is my first attempt. I will keep you posted.

Nice thread. Very informative! :)

Like them hot as well then. Stupid price for the vipers, especially as all the "hottests" chillies are essentially the same and very much depends on the actual chilli rather than "breed"

Still massive collection :)
