*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

Trialling gyms around my area at the moment, Gymbox wants to charge me £20 for the honour of trialling their gym before I make a decision to signup to a £700+ contract...

On and off again for so long I can't even remember. Enough of that rubbish!

Resumed workouts last week with just squats since the garage is badly laid out and hit 50 x 5 no probs.

Took a week before I ended up back in there and went for 60 x 5.

Quickly loaded up 80kg and managed 3 reps which is a new PB for me - happy with that for tonight! :D

Clearing up the garage at the weekend so I can do deads/rows and bench without hitting ladders!

It's the Bank branch but access to all the others as well but yea £50 odd is about the cheapest in London for the bigger chains, without corporate discount they are pricey as hell

Total fitness in wakefield used to be £54 for me. There is one here for £10.99 a month but your waiting wayyy too long to get on the weights.

Funnily enough I emailed them today saying basically I am not happy to pay that fee to trial a gym to which I'll be signing up to for a whole year which is basically £700 to them, and mentioned a tour is well and good but I cannot make a decision on a £700 membership based on a 5 min guided tour.

They basically emailed me back saying I am welcome to join other gyms which offer free passes but will not be recieving the same services as they offer and all their exclusivity blah blah.

Seriously I don't get gyms that do this, this is similar to selling a car without a test drive.

There are a few of thegymgroup in London for £20 a month but they are too far for me to get to, I've been a member of a local council gym for £40 a month which is ok but there is only one rack which everyone is waiting for all the time to chest press, I am looking at some of the middle/higher end gyms due to their distribution and equipment on offer, the number of gyms here which don't even have a single squat rack.

Oh that sucks ass man! At least at TF there is a cage and a rack. Usually just squatters there. Theres loads of benches so no one takes up the rack to train their chest. That's lucky I suppose. Its a same you don't know anyone that could get you in for a free training session with them.

I pay over 90 a month :p but it's close to where I live and I can park my car there, and it has enough of what I need. There are other gyms but they're just Not convenient. I could sign up to the reebok gym in canary wharf where I work but that's nearly 120 a month. Good gym though.

I miss my spit and sawdust gym :(. Bah, it's not that much, but of course if I could pay less in wouldn't say no. I don't really need a pool or sauna or swimming pool etc... Just some cages, barbells, and weights.

^^^ Even 6 months dieting is madness. It's a waste of an entire half year, most of which could have been spent more productively. Short diet cycles should be all that's necessary to lose whatever fat one wants to. Of course, I'm referring to experienced lifters already within sub 16% body fat regions.

And Marko, you've gone too low and your body may even end up increasing the rate at which it burns muscle tissue in an attempt to avoid too rapid further fat loss. I really believe that whatever you're doing has simply become unproductive. Ditch the diet, please, take a couple weeks at maintenance calories, then turn to some muscle building.

Would agree with this 100%

If you consider someone preparing for a competition/show (they have much further to go) will probably start cutting at around 16 weeks out and will get to very respectable levels of bodyfat & conditioning.

If it's taking you 18 months and you've not come from 25st plus something definitely isn't working and should be addressed.

Gradually, very gradually bring your calories back up to maintenance over several weeks. Put yourself in a surplus for 2/3 months, get your body ticking as it should and then try cutting again for 8 - 12 weeks maximum.
